The Buzzer Game

Intro

The Buzzer Game is a test of patience and concentration. It requires nerves of steel, as the Techo that runs it will try his hardest to knock you off your game. If you manage to master these traits, you may even win an avatar!

How to Play

The point of this game is to guide the hoop from one end of the wire to the other without touching it. If the metal hoop touches the wire, the buzzer will go off, causing you to lose a life and restart the level.

There is no time limit for each level, but you will receive bonus points if you manage to complete a level in under 30 seconds, for a total of 1 point per second remaining on the bonus clock. Take note that you only have three lives in this game, and there are no opportunities to earn more.

Controls

The only control used in this game is your mouse. Click the green circle on the leftmost end of the wire to begin a level. After you have clicked it, the hoop will move where your mouse moves. You do not have to hold down the mouse button during the game; use your cursor to guide the hoop. Your mouse movement must be smooth; you cannot use a touchscreen to jump to somewhere else on the wire. Each level finishes when your hoop crosses over the red circle at the other end of the wire.

Distractions

Beginning at level 3 the game will throw a distraction at you every 7-10 seconds in an attempt to make you lose a life. The main distraction is random noises, so you should mute your computer while playing. The Techo may also make faces at you, his eyes can glow red, and he sticks his tongue out. In addition, a Chokato could fall from the top of the screen, behind the wire, or Ollie could make a rare appearance.

Scoring

Each level is worth 20-50 points upon completion (see the table below). The only other way to earn points during the game is through bonuses received for finishing levels in under 30 seconds. If you receive no bonus points, you will have to play 11 levels in order to receive the avatar. There are no bonus points for ending the game with remaining lives.

You are guaranteed to receive the avatar if you are able to complete the game.

The below table reflects completion of the levels without bonus points being awarded.

Level Points Received Total Game Points
1 20 20
2 20 40
3 20 60

Strategy

There is actually a fairly simple and nearly foolproof strategy to playing this game successfully.

First, use the cheat code cheese before playing the first level. Activating this cheat will make your mouse cursor pop up on the screen and remain there for the rest of the game. This allows you to use your cursor to guide the hoop, instead of trying to guess based on what you can see. As long as the tip (point) of the cursor remains in the center of the black wire, you're in the clear.

Second, do not be afraid to play each level as slowly as possible. It is not worth losing a life in an attempt to receive a bonus from the level.

Quick Tips

  • Mute your computer to decrease in-game distractions.
  • Zoom in your browser window (usually via View > Zoom In/Out) to increase the size of the game, and therefore the size of the wire. It will help give you larger room for error!
  • Type the code cheese at the beginning of the game to show the cursor.
  • Type the code salamander while the timer is ticking to skip a level. You will not receive any points for the level but you can use this code as many times as you want.
  • On level 13, you can skip over the entire loop, simply follow the wire to the right when you reach the intersection.
  • If you wait until the bonus reaches "0" and then lose a life, your bonus will reset to 30 and stay there! You can only use this trick twice per game, though, as you only have 3 lives.

Level Solutions

In total, there are fifteen levels. You will not need to play all of them in order to achieve an avatar-worthy score, as long as you receive bonus points from some levels.

Ollie Appearance

Like many Flash games on the site, this game was worked on by Ollie, also known as the Phantom Orange Shirt Guy. Ollie has a very small chance of appearing in the background as a distraction, along with a 5 second guitar riff!
