Food
Food items are the key means of maintaining the function of your Neopet citizens, by stopping them from going hungry. The main Dacardian food is Omelettes, but there are other food items as well.
Omelettes can be crafted at the Omelette Slab, purchased at the Pearly Parlour, and awarded though daily login rewards, events, or completing quests. Other food items can sometimes be purchased or awarded through events.
Food items have different rarities which fill up the hunger meter more when fed to a Neopet.
Hunger
The passing of time will increase a Neopet's hunger, which you can replenish with omelettes and food. Each hour on the hour, every pet's hunger will decrease by 1% until reaching 0%—except one random pet's hunger will remain at a minimum of 2%. A pet must have at least 1% of its hunger bar filled to be able to be assigned to craft or gather anything—the ending hunger when the task will be completed does not matter.
Feeding an omelette will increase a pet's hunger meter according to its rarity, per the following breakdown.

The different hunger statuses for pets can be seen both as the icon over hungry pets on the island as they work and roam, and along with the specific hunger percent when clicked into a pet's feeding menu. The statuses are as follows and correspond to the indicated hunger levels.

10-39%
Fine
40-59%
Full
60-89%
Bloated
90-100%
Once pets are fed to Fine or more, they will no longer display the icon while on the map. It can be advantageous to leave them hungry as the icon makes it easier to first find your pet on the map, and then click on them if you need to access their menu; but it can also obstruct the view of the timer if they are gathering or crafting.
If you have push notifications enabled for the game, you will see this when you have a pet that reaches 0% hunger, or when your 2% hunger pet would have reached 0%:
As a new pet is unlocked, its hunger will start at 50% and will not begin to decrease until the pet is fed or assigned a gathering or crafting task.
Feeding Pets
To feed a pet, you can either click on it while it's not currently occupied with a task, or click on its Neohome. If you click on a pet, click on the "I got some food for you." dialogue prompt. If you click on a Neohome, then click the 'Feed Pet' button. This will bring up the pet's feed menu.
You can click on an omelette or food item and it will show the increased hunger bar and feed percentage, and then click on the 'Feed' button to confirm. Alternately, you can select an item and drag it over to your Neopet, but that will instantly feed the food without confirmation so be sure it's an item you wish to feed! If you overfeed a pet—by selecting an item that would put the new hunger at over 100% when fed—the hunger will be capped at 100% regardless.

Omelette Recipes
It takes at least three total items to craft an Omelette, and each can require 1-3 unique ingredients.

Encyclopedia Entry: This squishy, pillowy treat is flavoured with Negg Juice, so while it may not be the healthiest snack out there, your pets can at least get some nutrients from eating it.

Encyclopedia Entry: These sugar-coated marshmallow treats are modeled after Pteris, which hail from the land of Tyrannia. Good thing these Pteri Peeps don't come from there though, otherwise you might have to worry about them being made out of Rocks.
