Petpet Protection League (PPL)
The Petpet Protection League (PPL) is a Neopian organization that rewards Neopets that have held on to their Petpets for a long time! Each week, a random Petpet species/colour combo is chosen.
Timing
A new PPL is winner is selected every Wednesday, though some weeks are skipped due to holidays. The winner is announced in the New Features in addition to the PPL page.
Petpet Selection
The selected Petpet species/colour appears to be completely random! Very early on in the contest's history, they appeared to be manually selected by TNT, but this was changed to be random fairly early on.
Rankings
Petpets are ranked by their "Age", which is how long they have been attached to their Neopet. This means that removing a Petpet and giving it to a new Neopet (or even back to the same Neopet!) will reset their age.
Eligibility
There are a few caveats for an attached Petpet to be eligible for the PPL.
- Match the winning species/colour exactly. For example, if the winner one week was Halloween Polarchuck, no other colours of Polarchucks are eligible!
- Have a name. Petpets must be named to win. Petpets left with the default "no name" name are not eligible.
- Cannot be zapped. Petpets that have changed species and/or colour from the Petpet Lab Ray are not eligible for the PPL! (Petpets that were painted at the Petpet Puddle are eligible.)
- Be old. Only the top 200 most aged Petpets of the winning species/colour will receive trophies. Petpets younger than the 200th oldest Petpet unfortunately do not receive one.
Glitches and Skipped Winners
The script that awards PPL winners has historically been quite glitchy, and sometimes would cause legitimate winners to not be awarded. Sometimes this is easily visible in the results, which will have abrupt jumps in age between otherwise densely clumped winners, suggesting that a large population in between these clumps were glitchily skipped over.

Prizes
The Neopets who own a top 200 oldest winning Petpet will receive a Pet Trophy on their pet lookup based on their Petpet's ranking. This trophy will remain even if the winning Petpet is changed or removed!
1st–10th Place
11th–30th Place
31st–70th Place
71st–200th Place
All owners of the winning Petpet (even those outside the top 200) will also receive 10 Neopoints for every day the Petpet has aged. For example, a Petpet that was 365 days old would win their owner 365 × 10 = 3,650 Neopoints.
You will not be notified if you won. The trophy and Neopoints both appear silently!
Strategy
If you're seeking to win the PPL, here's some tips to keep in mind.
- Pick a rare or obscure Petpet. Seek out species/colours that few other players may have or be interested in. For example, Petpets that require a less popular Paint Brush on an expensive species are likely better than Petpets that were mass released. Some weeks don't even have 10 winners, and everyone gets a Gold trophy!
- Pick a species that hasn't won yet. TNT has only repeated winners a handful of times, and not since decades ago now. Use our list of non-winners to find one!
- Don't remove your Petpet. This resets their age.
More obscure Petpets will have lower competition. Here, even a Petpet attached the day before could have won Gold!
Petpets that are mass-released, like this one given out at the Advent Calendar, will have very dense distributions, making winning unlikely.

Initial Launch
The PPL was first released on June 11, 2003.
PETPET PROTECTION LEAGUE - We have a new feature on the site today, the PPL. Basically they are an anonymous group of Neopets who really care about their Petpets, and will give rewards to those people who look after their Petpet for the longest.
Spring 2026 Hiatus
In the New Features on March 18, 2026, TNT announced a hiatus for the PPL alongside their usual weekly winner announcement, perhaps to address the glitches described earlier in this article.
We'll be pausing this contest to perform some backend updates, but we will do our best to have it return as soon as we can!
The hiatus ended on June 3, 2026, with an announcement of some behind-the-scenes enhancements in the New Features that day.
While the PPL took a hiatus, they were able to dive into their Petpet studies on active Petpets and their names, owner counts, exclusion lists, and ensuring better randomization! As such, after their hard work, users should now see a new and improved PPL experience!
