This guide is old! The old site themes below are from a previous Neopets layout, which began being replaced in 2020, but is still used on a chunk of pages.

After Neopets revamped the whole site on April 26, 2007, users were given the gift of site themes! These replaced the old sidebars.
Site themes are typically obtained through participating in site events or at particular times of the year. You can see how many site themes a user has by looking at their user lookup in the "Collections" module. (It's right below the stamp count.)
Some site themes are have "special effects." For example, the Happy Birthday site theme increases the rate of random events. Some site themes are rumoured to have special effects, such as the Valentine's Day site theme, but those effects have never been provable or confirmed by TNT.
Changing Your Theme
You may change your site theme on the Settings page, as the Classic Site Theme option. There are several default themes to choose from, along with ones that you have unlocked.
Notifications
Below is a list of the various types of notifications you might receive and the associated icons in the default site theme. The icons in other themes will typically follow the same style.

Theme Previews
Below is a full listing of the available themes and their previews. We've sorted them into groups of Active themes (currently obtainable), Retired themes (typically from one time events), and Default themes (always available without unlocking).
Active Themes
There are currently 15 active themes. These themes are currently obtainable in some fashion or another. Some are annually available, or all year round.
Battleground: Seekers
Awarded to those who selected the Seekers as their faction of choice in the Battlegrounds of the Obelisk on a week they won.
Battleground: Awakened
Awarded to those who selected the Awakened as their faction of choice in the Battlegrounds of the Obelisk on a week they won.
Battleground: Brute Squad
Awarded to those who selected the Brute Squad as their faction of choice in the Battlegrounds of the Obelisk on a week they won.
Battleground: Order of the Red Erisim
Awarded to those who selected the Order of the Red Erisim as their faction of choice in the Battlegrounds of the Obelisk on a week they won.
Battleground: Thieves Guild
Awarded to those who selected the Thieves Guild as their faction of choice in the Battlegrounds of the Obelisk on a week they won.
Battlegrounds: The Sway
Awarded to those who selected the Sway as their faction of choice in the Battlegrounds of the Obelisk on a week they won.
Quizara's Curse
This site theme is awarded automatically after you redeem the four prize codes given to you when playing the LeapFrog game Quizara's Curse. This theme is still available if you can track down a copy of the game to play.
Neopets Purple
This site theme is obtained by viewing the pet lookup of any purple Neopet with a purple petpet attached. (You can click here for one!)
Altadorian Constellations
For this site theme, you have to complete the Altador Mini-Plot. This is the only plot-related site theme that is still open for users to obtain.
Altador Cup
This site theme is awarded for participating in the annual Altador Cup.
Space Faerie Premium
As of 2012, with the release of the new Premium service, all Premium members are awarded this site theme. Previously, this theme was obtained by being a Neopets Premium Member and referring five (5) paying members to Premium.
Valentine's Day
This site theme can only be obtained on Valentine's Day (February 14th) by sending another Neopian the item A Mysterious Valentines Card. Both you and the recipient will receive the theme. This item must be sent by a person without the site theme in order for any of the two users to get the theme. If you already have it and you send it to someone on the 14th, the other person will receive the card itself and not the site theme. The card will disappear after being used to obtain the theme.
Winter Holiday
This site theme was originally awarded through a random event on Terror Mountain. It is now released annually as a prize from the Advent Calendar. You must collect prizes from the Advent Calendar every day during the month of December, and you will then be awarded the theme on December 31st.
Happy Birthday
You get to use this theme across the site on two dates: the first being Neopets' Birthday (November 15th) and the second being your own birthday (as entered on your account profile). This site theme increases your chances of receiving a random event. This site theme is the only one that cannot be unlocked for permanent use. (In addition, you will see this site theme on your Neopets' lookup on the day of their birthday, but you will not see any increase in random events in that case.)
Haunted Woods
This site theme is awarded by refreshing on Neopets at 11:59pm NST on October 31st. This site theme was also given out for winning the First Random Contest.
