here were invented by the Neopets Team; others were created by players and have stuck

Secret Avatar
['siːkɹɪt 'ævətɑː] - noun
An icon used to represent yourself on the Neoboards, which players can only use upon completion of a certain task. Many such tasks cost a lot of Neopoints and/or time to complete-- the avatars gained from them are highly respected.
Example Usage:
"Wow, you have the Number Six secret avatar? That must have cost you a lot!"

Secretword
['siːkɹɪtwɜːd] - noun
A synonym for "password"-- the code that must be entered along with your username to log into Neopets.com. "Secretword" is a fan-made term created to get around the problem of Neopets' board filters blocking the word "password", no matter what context. Other workarounds for this include "fuzzword" and simply "word".
Example Usage:
"You're worried someone might be on your account? The first thing to do is change your secretword."

Shield
[ʃiːld] - noun
The image on a user's lookup that shows how long they have been a member of the site. (Not to be confused with actual shields in the Neopets Battledome, such as the Leaf Shield.)
Example Usage:
"My shield changed today. Now everyone can see I've been around for three years!"

Side Account
[saɪd ək'aʊnt] - noun
An account which is used to house more pets, an additional lab ray, an extra gallery, and so on. Side accounts are perfectly legal, but cannot participate in any activities that give out items or Neopoints.
Example Usage:
"I just couldn't decide whether I wanted a Jetsam or a Koi... So I made a side account, and now I have both!"

Siggy
['sɪgiː] - noun
Abbreviation for "signature". The text that appears at the foot of every Neoboard post you make. It can be changed here.
Example Usage:
"I like Dr. Sloth so much, I put a famous saying of his in my siggy!"

The text that appears below every Neoboard post you make. It can be changed here.

Significant Advantage
[sɪg'nɪfɪkənt æd'væntɪdʒ] - noun
A reference to the Neopets Team's responsibility not to introduce any new Neocash or Premium perk that will enable paying customers to be noticeably more successful in the main areas of Neopian life. While this is not an actual rule written down anywhere, most players perceive it as something that the Neopets Team will and should hold to.
Example Usage:
"I'd love to see a Neocash item that let you only see rare items in the shops, but I guess that would break Significant Advantage, so they'd never introduce it."

Site Theme
[saɪt θiːm] - noun
The colourscheme of the Neopets site. By default, the main colours of the site are golden and black, with a pattern of stars. However, you can change your site theme here, making menus, backgrounds and links appear in different colours. There are also more elaborate site themes, made from patterns and images based on special events and holidays, which can be unlocked by participating in those events.
Older users may occasionally refer to a site theme as a sidebar.
Example Usage:
"Wow, I really love the new site theme! It makes everything look so different!"

Smiley
['smaɪliː ] - noun
(1) A small picture that can be inserted into text on the Neoboards to decorate a post or express the writer's feelings. Most smilies are images of facial expressions, but there are also small pictures of Neopets, items and Petpets available. Also known as an emote or emoticon.
(2) A species of fishlike Petpet with a happy-looking round face.
Example Usage:
"In case you didn't see the sticking-out-tongue smiley after my post, I was joking."

Snarky
[snaːkiː] - adjective
Sarcastic, mocking, sharp, tongue-in-cheek.
Not to be confused with the member of the Neopets Team known as Snarkie.
Example Usage:
"So I asked her why she couldn't just give me the Baby Paint Brush... with hindsight, I deserved the snarky answer."

SoL
[ɛsoʊɛl] - noun
Abbreviation for "Sword of Lameness". An oddly bent-looking Battledome weapon from the Hidden Tower.
Example Usage:
"I can't help but laugh every time I see the SoL. It just looks so silly... and for a Neopets weapon that's saying something."

Sponsor Area
['spɒnsəɹ 'ɛəɹiːə] - noun
A page created by a company which has paid real-world money to Neopets, Inc. so its content can appear on the site. While sponsor areas are contained within Neopets.com and often contain ways to gain items or Neopoints, they frequently feature items or characters that don't normally appear in the world of Neopia, and shouldn't be taken as canon.
Example Usage:
"Be sure to check out the new sponsor area. They're giving away free backgrounds!"

SSP
[ɛsɛspiː] - noun
Abbreviation for "Steaming Skeem Potion". A Battledome weapon that does more damage against more intelligent pets.
Example Usage:
"In two-player, SSP is a surprisingly formidable weapon for its price."

SSS
[ɛsɛsɛs] - noun
(1) Abbreviation for "Scarab Stone Slingshot". A Battledome weapon that fires stones shaped like the famous Lost Desert beetle.
(2) Abbreviation for "Subservient Sentient Stones". A spooky trinket that was originally sold in the NC Mall.
(3) Abbreviation for "Styling Studio Supplies". A Neocash item that allows you to get a random available style for your Neopet at the Styling Studio.
Example Usage:
(1) "SSS has been outclassed by newer and cheaper weapons. I keep mine mostly for nostalgia."
(2) "The SSS really looks good with Hallowe'en pets!"
(3) "I'm taking my chances for a Faerie Moehog token using a SSS."

SSW
[ɛsɛsdʌbəljuː] - noun, verb
(1) Abbreviation for "Super Shop Wizard". A version of the Shop Wizard offered to members of Neopets Premium, which searches shops more thoroughly to find the lowest prices.
(2) To use the Super Shop Wizard to find the lowest price for an item.
Example Usage:
(1) "Come to my shop! My prices are the lowest on the SSW!"
(2) "Darn, I've got ANOTHER quest. Would you mind SSWing 'Eyrie Sweater' for me?"

Staffer
['stæfə] - noun
A member of the Neopets Team.
Example Usage:
"Which staffer are you betting on in the Yooyuball tournament?"

Stance
[stæns] - noun
A measure of the force with which your Neopet chooses to attack in the Battledome. You can choose your stance for each turn, ranging from Defend (which does less damage to your opponent but also protects your pet) to Fierce Attack (which does a lot of damage to your opponent but leaves you vulnerable).
Example Usage:
"Choosing your stance carefully could be the difference between victory and defeat."

Stats
[stæts] - noun
(1) The numbers that measure a Neopet's strength, defence, agility and endurance in the Battledome.
(2) Boosts to these numbers, given out randomly by the Lab Ray. Often seen as a "junk" result by players hoping for a species or colour change.
Example Usage:
(1) "I wanted to fight against the new one-player challenger, but my pet's stats aren't quite good enough yet."
(2) "What did you get from the lab today? Stats again? Me too."

Strength
[stɹɛnθ] - noun
One of a Neopet's Battledome stats. A measure of how effectively a pet can attack.
Example Usage:
"My Pteri isn't taking much damage, but she isn't doing much, either! Does she need higher Strength, or just a better weapon?"

Stuck
[stʌk] - adjective
In the Pound (the shelter for homeless pets), but unable to be viewed when refreshing the "Adopt" page there. No-one knows why this happens to some pets, but it's thought to have something to do with the characters in their names.
Example Usage:
"If I hadn't mistyped the name I was searching for in the Pound, I never would have found this stuck pet!"

Style Showdown
[staɪəl ʃoʊːdaʊn] - noun
A Neopia-wide fashion show. Players are invited to dress up their Neopets according to the theme of the event (past themes have included "Ready for Adventure" and "Masked in Mystery"). There are prizes for the best outfits, as chosen by the Neopets Team.
Not to be confused with the weekly Customisation Contest, which has no theme and gives out only trophies.
Example Usage:
"I spent 99k on this hat just to complete my Techo's Style Showdown outfit! Hope it catches the judges' eye..."

SuAP
[ɛsjuːɛɪpiː] - noun
Abbreviation for "Super Attack Pea". A Battledome weapon shaped like a tiny caped vegetable. Also, by extension, the secret avatar associated with this item.
Example Usage:
"SuAP's price makes it pretty ridiculous. Don't even bother considering this if you don't already have one."

T&C
[tiːəndsiː] - noun
Abbreviation for "Terms and Conditions". The basic rules of Neopets and its sister sites, which every player is required to have read and agreed to. They can be found at https://www.neopets.com/terms.phtml.
Example Usage:
"No, you can't sell your account-- it says so in the T&C. If you want to quit Neo, you should use the Remove Account link."

Tarla
['taːlæ] - noun, verb
(1) The name of a certain red Ixi who lives on Terror Mountain. As well as being shopkeeper at the Shop of Mystery, she is also the mascot for the item giveaways available from the Neopets browser toolbar, often called the Tarla Toolbar.
(2) To give away an item via the toolbar. This often leads to a sharp reduction in the item's price, as many more than before are available in Neopia.
Example Usage:
(1) "Does Tarla even SELL anything actually useful at the Shop of Mystery?"
(2) "I was hoping to sell this book, but then it got Tarla'd and now people are practically giving it away."

Tarla Toolbar
['taːlæ 'tuːlbaː] - noun
A common name for the Neopets Toolbar browser add-on (available at toolbar.neopets.com; unfortunately nonfunctional in many browsers, including several versions of Firefox). Although the toolbar also provides quick access to many parts of the site and an incoming Neomail icon, it is best known for alerting players when Tarla is giving out prizes, hence the fan-made name.
Example Usage:
"Hey, they finally got the Tarla Toolbar to work in my browser! Neat!"

TCG
[tiːsiːdʒiː] - noun
(1) Abbreviation of "Trading Card Game". A real-life game based on Neopets that was available to buy some years ago. It seems to have been a mixture of luck and strategy similar to Pokémon card battles.
(2) A particular type of collector's item; an illustrated card you can find or buy around the site. Not to be confused with the Collectable Cards that go into your Neodeck, these ones are displayed in a separate album.
Example Usage:
(1) "My friend's a real Neopets veteran. She once met Mr. Insane at a Neopets TCG tournament!"
(2) "Having the 'MSPP' TCG will get you a special avatar."

Tear
[tiːə] - noun
Abbreviation for "Thyora's Tear". A Battledome item based on an ancient Neopian legend of a broken-hearted Neopet and a kindly Faerie.
Example Usage:
"I wonder if anyone's selling a Tear? I've got the money, and I do need the defensive power."

TER
noun
TER is short for Total Expected Return (or Ratio), a probability-weighted average of possible outcomes on a set of Food Club bets (generally a set contains 10 bets, but can be any number of bets). The TER value is a quick way to gauge an estimated average expected number of units you can win for a set of bets, but it does not mean a particular set will actually win. Generally, betting sets with higher TER in the long run should yield more profit on average. The possible TER value ranges will differ each round based on pirate odds and combinations available.
Example Usage:
"A set of ten bets with TER of 11 is barely profitable."

A question asked of Neopets.com's support team, to which any answers will be attached. You can view any tickets you have sent in by clicking Help at the foot of any page, then My Support.

Shortened form of "Neopian Times". Neopets.com's weekly fanwork newsletter, featuring articles, stories, serials and comics submitted by ordinary users.
Example Usage:
"Would you take a look at my comic, please? I want to make sure there's no spelling mistakes before I send it to the Times."
