here were invented by the Neopets Team; others were created by players and have stuck
around because they're so useful. From Meepits to MPETs and from RI to restocking,

JumpStart
['dʒʌmpstaːt] - noun
The former parent company of Neopets from 2014-2023. A video game company best known for their popular educational games.
Example Usage:
"What do you think has changed about the site since Neopets joined JumpStart?"

Lag
[læg] - noun, verb
(1) Delays and slowness caused either by the player's slow computer, or by unusually high stress on the Neopets servers.
(2) To run slowly, requiring users to wait longer than usual and/or repeat an action several times in order to get results.
Example Usage:
(1) "I always lose Key Quest because of the lag I experience during minigames. I can barely move my mouse before my opponent's won!"
(2) "The site is lagging so much this weekend. This is my third try at actually adding a post to this thread!"

Lookup
['lʊkʌp] - noun
A pet's or a user's editable profile, where their stats can be viewed. Many people customise theirs with creative design and descriptive text.
Example Usage:
"I've put a better drawing of my Moehog on her lookup."

Loyal User Perk
['lɔɪjəl juːzə pɜːk] - noun
A privilege that is only available to users who have been on the site for a certain length of time. Loyal User Perks include occasional discounts at the Hidden Tower, access to a special area of the NC Mall (the Elite Boutique), and an increased number of transfers per account per month.
Example Usage:
"I'm finally old enough for some Loyal User Perks! It's nice to be appreciated. ^_^"

Main Account
[mɛɪn ək'aʊnt] - noun
The account on which a player earns Neopoints and participates in activities that give out items. (If a player has only one account, then it is naturally their main.) Other accounts, known as side accounts, may only be used to house pets, galleries, lab maps, petpages and so on.
Example Usage:
"Why did you send a Neomail to this account? My main account is..."

Marker
['maːkə] - noun
An inactive account used as a guideline for whether an account purge has started, or if it has reached a certain point in the alphabet (purges are conducted alphabetically). If the marker is deleted, the users watching it know that the purge has started and/or that the purge has reached that letter of the alphabet.
Example Usage:
"What markers are we watching at the moment?"

Mod
[mɒd] - noun
Abbreviation of "moderator". The members of the Neopets Team who monitor people's communication on the site and take action to remove anything offensive.
Example Usage:
"Oh, good, the mods have deleted that offensive post."

Neocam
['niːoʊkæm] - noun
A camera that's positioned in the Neopets head office to capture images of the Neopets Team at work. It was originally kept turned on all the time, but nowadays new pictures are only taken on special occasions.
Example Usage:
"We've added some new Neocam pictures so you can see how our Hallowe'en party went!"

Neocircle
[niːoʊsɜːkəl] - noun
A system tried out by Neopets some years ago that would link together petpages of a similar theme. It was eventually scrapped, leaving petpage owners to set up their own manual versions.
Example Usage:
"That page has been around since forever. It still has a button for its old Neocircle..."

Neofriend
['niːoʊfɹɛnd] - noun, verb
(1) A user you trust; a player you can quickly and easily share messages and items with, and who can help you out in the Habitarium game.
(2) To mark a user as trusted in this way.
Example Usage:
(1) "I've enjoyed chatting with you. Would you like to be my Neofriend?"
(2) "When I was a newbie, I went around Neofriending everyone who so much as said two words to me. Now I have no idea who half the people on my list are..."

Neomail
['niːoʊmɛɪl] - noun, verb
(1) The private messaging system on Neopets.com.
(2) A message sent through this system.
(3) To send a Neomail message to someone.
Example Usage:
(1) "Neomail is a quick way of contacting my friends."
(2) "If you want to play Key Quest together, just send me a Neomail and I'll join you any time."
(3) "She Neomailed me with some of her ideas for the new project."

Neoname
['niːoʊnɛɪm] - noun
A synonym for "username". The name you use to log into Neopets.
Example Usage:
"Everyone calls me 'Lisa' on this forum, but my Neoname is actually Lissannia12."

Neopets Team
[niːoʊpɛts tiːm] - noun
The staff of Neopets.com and the effective government of Neopia. The Team includes artists, programmers, moderators, support assistants and at least one legal professional, as well as many other roles we probably haven't even thought of here. "The Neopets Team" is often abbreviated to TNT.
Example Usage:
"Staff Smasher is a game where you try to whack members of the Neopets Team with a giant mallet."

Neovision
['niːoʊvɪʒən] - noun
A contest where people could enter their own Neopets-themed animations. It ran for a few years before being retired due to lack of interest.
Example Usage:
"I remember seeing this very funny Neovision clip with a Slorg playing the guitar... it was priceless."

NetDragon
[nɛtdrægən] - noun
NetDragon is former parent company of Jumpstart, which is the producer of Neopets. NetDragon acquired Jumpstart and its assets in July 2017. It sold to private ownership in 2023.
Example Usage:
"They're giving away some freebies in the NC Mall to celebrate the NetDragon acquisition!"

Nick-Bar
[nɪkbaː] - noun
The white bar that appears at the top of the site with suggestions of other Nickelodeon-related sites players might want to visit.
Example Usage:
"I knew being a Premium subscriber would stop me seeing ads, but I was quite surprised to see that the Nick-bar had disappeared as well."

Nickelodeon Virtual Worlds
[nɪkəl'oʊdiːən vɜːtjuːwəl wɜːldz] - noun
An umbrella term covering all the multiplayer games that were counted as part of the Nickelodeon family under Viacom's ownership. While Neopets was still under Viacom, the games included: Neopets, Petpet Park, and Monkey Quest.
Example Usage:
"Please don't ask other players for contact information outside of the Nickelodeon Virtual Worlds sites."

NM
[ɛnɛm] - noun, verb
Abbreviation for "Neomail".
(1) The private messaging system on Neopets.com.
(2) A message sent through this system.
(3) To send a Neomail message to someone.
Example Usage:
(1) "Let me know via NM when you've found a buyer for that item."
(2) "Wow, I got an NM complimenting me on my Poetry Contest entry!"
(3) "I'm going to NM him some ideas I had for improving his petpage."

No-Technology Rule
[noʊ tɛk'nɒlədʒiː ɹuːl] - noun
A previous rule concerning submissions to the Neopian Times. Despite the name, it did not actually state that writers couldn't write about ANY kind of technology; rather, it specified that you couldn't write about any electronic, electric or petrol-powered gadget that had not already been confirmed to exist in Neopia.
The rule has since been heavily relaxed for the competition, and most technology can now be referenced.
Example Usage:
"Ratbags! My story got rejected for breaking the no-technology rule. Maybe I should have axed that security camera in Chapter Three."

Not Yet Born
[nɒt jɛt bɔːn] - adjective
Refers to a pet whose owner never completed the pet creation process. Earlier in the history of Neopia, it was possible to receive your newborn Neopet even if you were still midway through creation. This is no longer possible.
Example Usage:
"I looked up a cool name to see who owned it, but all it said on the pet lookup was 'not yet born'. Meh."

Offsite
['ɒfsaɪt (noun) ɒf'saɪt (adverb)] - noun, adverb
(1) A page not on Neopets.com or Petpetpark.com.
(2) Outside Neopets.com or Petpetpark.com; elsewhere on the Internet.
Example Usage:
(1) "We aren't allowed to promote offsites on the Neoboards, even if they're helpful ones."
(2) "No offsite planning! Let's keep all the discussion of this here in the guild where everyone can see it."

Permasilenced
[pɜːmə'saɪlɛnst] - verb, adjective
Abbreviation for "permanently silenced". Blocked from communicating with other users anywhere on the site, without an end date.
Example Usage:
"I can't chat on my main anymore, I got permasilenced last week. I keep tripping the filters!"

Permed
[pɜːmd] - verb, adjective
Abbreviation for "permanently silenced". Blocked from communicating with other users anywhere on the site, without an end date.
Example Usage:
"I can't believe my main account got permed for mentioning that!"

Permission Slip
[pɜː'mɪʃən slɪp] - noun
The form that must be filled in by a parent or guardian, and faxed to Neopets Headquarters, before a child under thirteen is allowed to send Neomails or post on the Neoboards.
Example Usage:
"My little sister still can't post on these boards, since Mum won't sign her permission slip. :("

Petpage
['pɛtpɛɪdʒ] - noun
Users' editable pages on Neopets.com. There is one petpage for every pet in Neopia, at the address https://www.neopets.com/~[pet's name], and only the owner of a specific pet can edit the page with that pet's name. If the owner has not entered any text or images, a default template will be displayed when someone views the page.
Example Usage:
"You can't see my Lupe very well in this picture, so I've put a bigger one on his petpage."

Petpet Park
['pɛtpɛt pɑːk] - noun
A spin-off game (at petpetpark.com) which you can log into with your Neopets account. Players adopt a single Petpet which can explore, collect items and help various colourful characters with their tasks. The game was retired when the site was sold from Viacom to Jumpstart in 2014.
Example Usage:
"Will you come and help me with a task in Petpet Park?"

PIN
[pɪn] - noun
A four-digit code that can be placed on your account, and must then be entered before taking certain important actions (such as taking money out of the bank). This means that even if someone manages to access your account, they cannot do significant damage.
Example Usage:
"I set a PIN on my Safety Deposit Box, because I want to protect the rare items I just bought."

Pound Release
[paʊnd rɪ'liːs] - noun
(1) The name of a special account belonging to the Neopets Team. Pets who had to be temporarily removed from the Pound due to the risk of a server overload are housed here.
(2) The regular movement of pets from that account back into the Pound. This happens very slowly (at the rate of a couple of pets per day).
Example Usage:
(1) "That pretty Aisha I had my eye on is STILL sitting on Pound Release."
(2) "Pound Release tends to happen at 9:47 NST."

Premade
['pɹiːmɛɪd] - noun, adjective
(1) A design for a lookup, petpage or shop that was created by a player who then offered it to other Neopians to use.
(2) Based on, or used as, such a template, rather than being created from scratch to suit an individual page.
Example Usage:
(1) "My friend has a bit of a talent for petpage design. I've seen tons of people using her premades as a basis for their pages."
(2) "I'm going to have to go with premade petpage designs, because my coding skills are awful."

Premie
['pɹiːmiː] - noun
A subscriber to Neopets Premium, a feature that allows access to a number of small perks around the site in return for a monthly or yearly donation.
Example Usage:
"Are you on a quest? I'm a Premie, so I can find that item for you faster."
