Welcome to the Neopian Dictionary! Here, you can find definitions and explanations for all those strange Neopian words that have been puzzling you. Some of the words here were invented by the Neopets Team; others were created by players and have stuck around because they're so useful. Neoboard Pen

['niːoʊbɔːd pɛn] - noun

An item that can be bought with Neocash. Owning one allows a user to post longer messages on the Neoboards, and to easily switch between using different fonts and avatars.

Example Usage:

"I bought a Neoboard Pen because I was really fed up of always running out of posting space."

NeoHTML

['niːoʊɛɪtʃtiːɛmɛl] - noun

The coding used to make your board posts appear in different colours, sizes or fonts, or with extra decoration. Also known as a font.

Example Usage:

"If you have NeoHTML disabled, some posts display a little oddly."

Neorelated

['niːoʊɹɪlɛɪtəd] - adjective

Having to do with the Neopets site and its features. The opposite of off topic. All Neoboard posts should be Neorelated, although in practice there are too few moderators to enforce this completely or consistently.

Example Usage:

"No, you can't ask the Help Chat for help choosing your makeup for your school's leavers' ball. This board is for Neorelated questions."

Neotitle

['niːoʊtaɪtəl] - noun

A humorous self-description (picked from a list of presets) that appears underneath your avatar when you post on the Neoboards.

Example Usage:

"My Neotitle is 'Proud Nerd' because I just love explaining to people how to code petpages!"

NR

[ɛnaː] - adjective

Abbreviation of "Neorelated". Having to do with the Neopets site and its features. The opposite of off-topic. All Neoboard posts should be Neorelated, although in practice there are too few moderators to enforce this completely or consistently.

Example Usage:

"Why are you posting on the Neoboards about your guppy? How is this NR?"

NTY GLT

[ɛntiːwaɪ dʒiːɛltiː] - interjection

An abbreviation for "No, thank you; good luck trading" or "No, thank you; good luck, though". Used on the Neoboards when an owner has a Neopet (or, more rarely, an item) up for trade and someone makes an offer they are not interested in.

Example Usage:

"Owner 1: Will you take my Baby Draik in exchange for that Plushie Koi?"
"Owner 2: NTY, GLT! :)"

Off Topic

[ɒf 'tɒpɪk] - adjective

(1) In the wrong category of Neoboard. For instance, a thread about the Beauty Contest posted on the Trades and Auctions board.
(2) Not related to Neopets at all, and thus unsuitable for posting on the Neoboards.

Example Usage:

"Quit posting off topic already! You're clogging up the boards!"

OOC

[oʊoʊsiː] - adjective

Abbreviation of "Out of Character". If someone involved in a roleplaying thread needs to tell the other players something that isn't part of the story, he or she will speak OOC -- that is, as their normal self, rather than their pet or chosen character from the roleplay.

Example Usage:

"Just to go OOC for a moment, I've just been told we're going out to dinner, so I may need to pick up this roleplay again later after I get back. Is that okay?"

OP

[oʊpiː] - noun

Abbreviation of "Original Poster", meaning the person who started a topic on the Neoboards.

Example Usage:

"We got a little off track for a while there, huh? But to return to what the OP originally said, I think..."

Packrat

['pækɹæt] - noun

The requirement for a particular secret avatar of the same name. Users need to collect 1,000 different items in their Safety Deposit Box.

Example Usage:

"Is anyone selling cheap items? I need some stuff for Packrat."

Pen

[pɛn] - noun

Abbreviation for "Neoboard Pen". An item that can be bought with Neocash. Owning one allows a user to post longer messages on the Neoboards, and to easily switch between using different fonts and avatars.

Example Usage:

"I'm going to make myself a Meridell-themed font to use with my new pen!"

Report-Happy

[ɹɪ'pɔːt 'hæpiː] - noun

A person who is very quick to inform the Neopets Team about anything that even looks as if it might be breaking a rule. Generally an insulting term.

Example Usage:

"This board is so full of report-happies! Geez! All I asked was whether I would be allowed to name my pet Barack Obama."

Roleplay

['ɹoʊlplɛɪ] - verb

To interact with others while talking in the manner of another character or person (often one of your Neopets), and using textual "directions" to indicate what that character or person would be doing during the conversation. For instance:

Thyassa: *waves paws* Who wants to come and play Gormball?

Roleplaying is very popular, both as a pastime and a way of developing a pet's personality.

Example Usage:

"I've roleplayed as my Eyrie a few times before. It's fun trying to think of how a Tyrannian pet would act."

RP

[aːpiː] - verb, noun

(1) Abbreviation for "roleplay". To interact with others while talking in the manner of another character or person (often one of your Neopets), and using textual "directions" to indicate what that character or person would be doing during the conversation. For instance:

Hannah: *throws rope over her shoulder* Don't be such a baby, Armin! I'm sure there's treasure in this cave!

(2) A roleplaying session.

Example Usage:

(1) "I RP with my friends all the time! It's fun, and it helps me explore sides of my pets' personalities I hadn't written about before."
(2) "We're thinking of having an RP based on Dr. Sloth and his minions. Would you like to join? We'll let you be Ylana Skyfire if you want!"

RPer

[aːpiːə] - noun

Abbreviation for "roleplayer". Someone who likes to interact with others while acting out the part of a pet or fictional character, speaking as that Neopian would speak and describing the actions they would take.

Example Usage:

"My friend is a keen RPer. It took several weeks after I met him before I knew what he sounded like when he was just posting on the boards as himself, and not as Fyora, Jeran or Xandra!"

Secret Avatar

['siːkɹɪt 'ævətɑː] - noun

An icon used to represent yourself on the Neoboards, which players can only use upon completion of a certain task. Many such tasks cost a lot of Neopoints and/or time to complete-- the avatars gained from them are highly respected.

Example Usage:

"Wow, you have the Number Six secret avatar? That must have cost you a lot!"

Shout

[ʃaʊt] - verb

To post in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS on the Neoboards. This is not good manners.

Example Usage:

"Please can you stop shouting? There's really no need."

Siggy

['sɪgiː] - noun

Abbreviation for "signature". The text that appears at the foot of every Neoboard post you make. It can be changed here.

Example Usage:

"I like Dr. Sloth so much, I put a famous saying of his in my siggy!"

Signature

['sɪgnətʃe] - noun

The text that appears below every Neoboard post you make. It can be changed here.

Example Usage:

"I really like your new signature! Can you show me how to make that star symbol you've got at the end?"

Smiley

['smaɪliː ] - noun

(1) A small picture that can be inserted into text on the Neoboards to decorate a post or express the writer's feelings. Most smilies are images of facial expressions, but there are also small pictures of Neopets, items and Petpets available. Also known as an emote or emoticon.
(2) A species of fishlike Petpet with a happy-looking round face.

Example Usage:

"In case you didn't see the sticking-out-tongue smiley after my post, I was joking."

Snarky

[snaːkiː] - adjective

Sarcastic, mocking, sharp, tongue-in-cheek.
Not to be confused with the member of the Neopets Team known as Snarkie.

Example Usage:

"So I asked her why she couldn't just give me the Baby Paint Brush... with hindsight, I deserved the snarky answer."

Spam

[spæm] - noun, verb

(1) Messages that serve no useful purpose and simply clutter the Neoboards. These include threads posted in the wrong topic area, messages about real-life issues, messages that are nothing but smilies, and the same message posted over and over again.
(2) To post such useless messages on the Neoboards.

Example Usage:

(1) "There's always more spam on the Neoboards in summer than at any other time of the year."
(2) "I wish people would stop spamming about the Twilight films. They have the whole Internet for that and they choose to post it HERE?"

Spammer

['spæmə] - noun

Someone who posts pointless, repetitive, and/or off-topic messages on the Neoboards, or floods another person's inbox with mail. This is against the rules.

Example Usage:

"Bleh, the Help Chat is always full of spammers during the summer. I can't wait for September!"

Waiting Room

['wɛɪtɪŋ ɹuːm] - noun

A thread created on the Neoboards so that people can chat together while waiting for an announced event to start.

Example Usage:

"D'you think Lutaris will be available on Lutari Day this year? Well, there's only six hours until we find out... I'm making a Lutari Day Waiting Room!"
