Welcome to the Neopian Dictionary! Here, you can find definitions and explanations for all those strange Neopian words that have been puzzling you. Some of the words here were invented by the Neopets Team; others were created by players and have stuck around because they're so useful. Painted

['pɛɪntəd] - adjective

A colour other than red, yellow, blue or green (and for Grundos, purple, brown or white). Confusingly, the term "painted" applies even if the pet acquired the colour some other way, such as through a Random Event.

Example Usage:

"People are always on the lookout for painted pets they can adopt."

PC

[piːsiː] - noun

(1) Abbreviation for "Pound Chat". The Neoboard where players come to talk about Neopets they have up for adoption or trade. It is generally a very hectic and busy place.
(2) Abbreviation for "Plot Chat". The Neoboard that appears during a plot (usually board #7), where players can discuss puzzles and characters. An antiquated term.
(3) Abbreviation for "Price Check". An acronym used when asking the price of items. Often used on the Battledome Chat and the Trades and Auctions board when asking the value of a item that is difficult to price.

Example Usage:

(1) "I posted on the PC about my pet, but nobody was interested today. I'll try again tomorrow."
(2) "Did you hear there's a new plot step out? I bet the PC will have some more information."
(3) "Hey, I'd like a PC on Fish Negg Plushie, please."

Permalabbie

['pɜːməlæbiː] - noun

A pet that is regularly zapped at the Secret Laboratory, and whose owner intends to keep zapping him/her for the foreseeable future.

Example Usage:

"Harry is my permalabbie, so he doesn't really have a fixed appearance. When I draw pictures of him, I tend to stick his frizzy hair and glasses on whatever species he is at the time."

Place

[plɛɪs] - verb

To win a trophy of any kind from the Beauty Contest.

Example Usage:

"I didn't even place this week. I guess I should have advertised more."

Pocket Neopet

['pɒkɪt 'niːoʊpɛt] - noun

A small electronic toy (in the real world) that let you play at caring for a Neopet. No longer sold, although you may be able to find some second-hand ones on the Internet.

Example Usage:

"My Pocket Neopet always used to bleep just when I was trying to take a nap."

Portfolio

[pɔːt'foʊliːoʊ] - noun

The collection of shares a player has bought in the Neopian Stock Market.

Example Usage:

"I've been buying 15,000 NP's worth of shares every day. I'm building quite a big portfolio!"

PP

[piːpiː] - noun

(1) Abbreviation for "Petpage". Users' editable pages on Neopets.com.
(2) Abbreviation for "Pike Pike". A Battledome weapon that can be obtained from the Underwater Fishing Cavern.

Example Usage:

(1) "I'm looking for the PP someone made about Almost Abandoned Attic restocks."
(2) "The PP is a little overpriced, but it gets interesting when combined with other weapons."

Quad

[kwɒd] - adjective

An art style in which Neopets are drawn as standing and moving in poses appropriate to their build and species characteristics, rather than in humanlike poses. Any clothes they are shown wearing also tend to be adapted to the individual species rather than trying as hard as possible to resemble human clothes.

Originally from a word meaning "four" and referring to the four paws a quad pet like a Lupe or Aisha would stand on, this word has been extended to mean the opposite of anthro.

Example Usage:

"I'm a fan of art that really shows off quad Neopets."

Quickref Panel

['kwɪkrɛf 'pænəl] - noun

The box on the left-hand side of most Neopets.com pages that displays a picture of your active and their important stats.

Example Usage:

"You can see whether your pet is sad or hungry by looking at the quickref panel."

RB

[aːbiː] - adjective

Abbreviation for "Royal Boy". Painted with the Royal Paint Brush to give the appearance of a prince-like Neopet. The Royal Boy colour is achieved by painting a male Neopet, although it is possible to change the pet's gender later and keep the colour.

Example Usage:

"The RB Acara is featured on an avatar."

Restricted

[ɹɪs'tɹɪktəd] - adjective

A pet species that cannot be created in the normal way, but must be obtained via some special means.

Example Usage:

"No, you can't create a Krawk even on Krawk Day. They're restricted."

RG

[aːdʒiː] - adjective

Abbreviation for "Royal Girl". Painted with the Royal Paint Brush to give the appearance of a princess-like Neopet. The Royal Girl colour is achieved by painting a female Neopet, although it is possible to change the pet's gender later and keep the colour.

Example Usage:

"I love the pink coat of the RG Uni."

SC

[ɛssiː] - noun

(1) Abbreviation for "Scuzzy's Comb". A Battledome weapon sometimes given as a reward for completing the game Neoquest II.
(2) Abbreviation for "Scratchcard". A game of chance where you buy a card and uncover six of the nine hidden spaces.

Example Usage:

(1) "SC is low-priced enough that it definitely makes my must-have list."
(2) "You should scratch some Terror Trove SCs. You might get a level or two if you are lucky."

Scam

[skæm] - noun, verb

(1) An attempt to gain someone's Neopoints, Neopets, items or account dishonestly and/or in a manner which is against Neopets' rules.
(2) To try to get other players to give you their Neopoints, Neopets, items or accounts by such means.

Example Usage:

(1) "Don't believe anyone who tells you they have a guaranteed way to get free paintbrushes. It's always a scam."
(2) "After I heard she'd been scamming newbies out of their Neopoints, I could never look at her the same way again."

Shell

[ʃɛl] - noun

An innocent-looking account being used by a scammer to sell off items that have been stolen, rather than using the account that did the scamming in the first place (and which will probably be frozen fairly quickly).

Example Usage:

"I saw an account selling that item I wanted, but I'm worried it might be a shell. I've heard there's been a new scam going around."

Shield

[ʃiːld] - noun

The image on a user's lookup that shows how long they have been a member of the site. (Not to be confused with actual shields in the Neopets Battledome, such as the Leaf Shield.)

Example Usage:

"My shield changed today. Now everyone can see I've been around for three years!"

Significant Advantage

[sɪg'nɪfɪkənt æd'væntɪdʒ] - noun

A reference to the Neopets Team's responsibility not to introduce any new Neocash or Premium perk that will enable paying customers to be noticeably more successful in the main areas of Neopian life. While this is not an actual rule written down anywhere, most players perceive it as something that the Neopets Team will and should hold to.

Example Usage:

"I'd love to see a Neocash item that let you only see rare items in the shops, but I guess that would break Significant Advantage, so they'd never introduce it."

Sitely

['saɪtliː ] - noun

A section placed at the end of a petpage for things that don't have to do with the subject of the rest of the page, but rather, with the running and audience of the page itself. The sitely section generally contains things like link-back buttons, a list of affiliates or sister sites, and any awards the page might have received.

Example Usage:

"Thanks so much for the award! I've put it on the page, under Sitely."

SLM

[ɛsɛlɛm] - noun

Abbreviation for "Secret Laboratory Map", more commonly known as the "lab map". A set of nine pieces (often referred to with numbers) that must be obtained before a player can use the Secret Lab.

Example Usage:

"I'm selling piece #5 of the SLM. What's it worth these days?"

SS

[ɛsɛs] - noun

(1) Abbreviation for "Scorchstone". A family of Battledome weapons shaped like a small statue of a Scorchio holding an orb. They typically have healing powers.
(2) Abbreviation for "Shootout Showdown". One of the games offered at the annual Altador Cup. Players try to get their Yooyu ball past a Chia goalkeeper.

Example Usage:

(1) "My favorite healers are members of the SS family. They are so shiny. @_@"
(2) "I've been boosting my Altador Cup rank by playing SS a lot."

SSS

[ɛsɛsɛs] - noun

(1) Abbreviation for "Scarab Stone Slingshot". A Battledome weapon that fires stones shaped like the famous Lost Desert beetle.
(2) Abbreviation for "Subservient Sentient Stones". A spooky trinket that was originally sold in the NC Mall.
(3) Abbreviation for "Styling Studio Supplies". A Neocash item that allows you to get a random available style for your Neopet at the Styling Studio.

Example Usage:

(1) "SSS has been outclassed by newer and cheaper weapons. I keep mine mostly for nostalgia."
(2) "The SSS really looks good with Hallowe'en pets!"
(3) "I'm taking my chances for a Faerie Moehog token using a SSS."

Stalk

[stɔːk] - verb

To watch a particular pet or account that has become inactive, in the hope that its name will be deleted from the database due to inactivity and made available to use again.

Example Usage:

"I'm stalking the name of the hero from my favourite novel. The person with that username hasn't logged in since 2006!"

Stalkerbox

['stɔːkəbɒks] - noun

Among fans, a jokey name for the "Neofriends (Beta)" panel on the left of most pages, which allows players to see friends who are online.

Example Usage:

"You were online earlier? I didn't see your name in the stalkerbox. Were you on your side account?"

Target Zap

['taːgət zæp] - verb

To use the Lab Ray on a Neopet in the hope of a specific (usually lab-exclusive) colour change, often using morphing potions to change their species back to the desired one if it changes.

Example Usage:

"My friend's target zapping for a Chocolate Uni. I bought her a few Green Uni Morphing Potions for the inevitable species changes..."

Thade

[θɛɪd] - noun

(1) A shortened form of the name of the sinister Kacheek "Eliv Thade".
(2) Abbreviation for "Eliv Thade Make-Up Kit". A wearable item themed around Eliv Thade, originally available at the NC Mall.

Example Usage:

(1) "Thade doesn't appear in the Tale of Woe comics, although another character from his Flash game does."
(2) "Is anybody looking to trade Thade? I can make some decent offers."

TMGE

[tiːɛmdʒiːjiː] - verb

Abbreviation. To reject a submission from the Neopian Times because there were Too Many Good Entries already being considered for submission. If the same entry is TMGEd multiple times, it can be a sign that some small aspect of the entry is causing problems for the editor, and worth a rewrite.

Example Usage:

"SPOTTED MEEPITS! My article exposing Queen Fyora got TMGEd again?!"

Token

['toʊkən] - noun

(1) The playing piece used to represent a player in a game of Key Quest. Rare tokens can be gained from real-life merchandise, bought in the NC Mall, or given out on special occasions.
(2) The Nostalgic pet style wearable item that allows Neopets to maintain an unconverted look.

Example Usage:

(1) "Wow, your token looks like a Christmas Bruce! It's so cute!"
(2) "I'm searching for a Faerie Lenny token."

ToT

[tiːoʊtiː] - noun

(1) Abbreviation for "Tooth of Terask". A Battledome weapon sometimes given as a reward for completing the game Neoquest II.
(2) Abbreviation for "Trick or Treat Doorstep Background". A Hallowe'en-themed backdrop for your Neopet, originally available from the NC Mall.

Example Usage:

(1) "At around 10k, the ToT makes a pretty good beginner's weapon."
(2) "I wish I could get my hands on a ToT to complete my pet's look."

[vɛt] - noun

Abbreviation of "veteran". Someone who has been on Neopets for a long time and knows their way around.

Example Usage:

"I wrote an article on Neopian history, but I thought I'd ask some vets for their opinion before I send it to the Neopian Times."

['vɛtəɹən] - noun

Someone who has played on Neopets for a long time, and knows all the site's tips and tricks. The length of time someone has been in Neopia is not always the same as their account age!

"I've been around for nearly five years now, but I still don't really FEEL like a veteran yet..."
