To prevent a Neopet who has won the Beauty Contest from entering again for a period of four months. This rule is intended to give many different entrants a chance, rather than letting the same pet win week after week.

Example Usage:

"So, I finally won! But now my Scorchio's been goldbanned. Guess I'll have to figure out how to draw one of my other pets..."

Guild

Guild

[gɪld] - noun

A group of friends, often sharing a common interest, who have their own chat board as a meeting-place. A user can only belong to one guild at a time. Guilds are often themed around real-world fandoms, specific age groups or nationalities, or shared goals (such as finding homes for pets in the Pound).

Example Usage:

"I see you're a young adult Neopian, too. Would you like to join my guild?"

Gup

Gup

[gʌp] - verb

To use a cheap morphing potion on a pet. If your pet has changed to a species you hate at the Secret Laboratory, this is a quick and easy way to change that. This term was originally an acronym (GUP, after Green Uni [Morphing] Potion, once by far the cheapest transforming item due to its low rarity and being a Wheel of Excitement prize), but the lowercase forms "gup" and "gupped" are also common.

Example Usage:

"My lab pet's been a Meerca for ages, and I don't even like Meercas. I think I might gup her."

Gwen

Gwen

[gwɛn] - verb

To cause an inactive pet that should be deleted in an account purge to get stuck in limbo, preventing them from being removed from the database. It appears that the Neopets Team have to release such pets into the Pound manually.

Example Usage:

"I was going to recreate that pet, but then some utter idiot gwenned her! Aaaagh!"

HATIC

[ɛɪtʃɛɪtiːaɪsiː] - noun

(1) Abbreviation for the Flash game "Hannah and the Ice Caves". A tricky multi-level adventure starring a young Usul.
(2) The plot of the same name, which took place in Year Six and led to the introduction of the Bori species.

Example Usage:

(1) "I just can't get past this level in HATIC! I think I'm going to need a walkthrough."
(2) "My favourite plot character is still definitely Kanrik from HATIC. I mean, what a handsome Gelert!"

To put an entry for a creative contest with no specific deadline (such as the Poetry Gallery or Neopian Times) to one side, and consider it for a future edition of the contest.

Example Usage:

"My Neopian Times comic got held over. I guess at least they're thinking about publishing it-- stay positive, right?"

Abbreviation for "Intelligence". A number representing how smart your Neopet is. Mostly for show, although it is a requirement for certain Battledome weapons.

Example Usage:

"I bought a lot of books yesterday to raise my intel."

One of a Neopet's stats. A measure of your Neopet's brainpower and logic, raised by reading books. Has no purpose in the Battledome, other than enabling access to a few rare weapons.

Example Usage:

"My Shoyru is the bookworm in the family. Her intelligence is over 300 points already!"

IQ

IQ

[aɪkjuː] - noun

(1) Abbreviation for "Island Quiggle". Can also be used to refer to the avatar that features this kind of Neopet.
(2) Abbreviation for "Illusen's Quest". A timed challenge set by the kindly Earth Faerie, with item rewards.

Example Usage:

(1) "I wish my friend would let me borrow her IQ so I could get the avatar, but she won't let him out of her sight."
(2) "I'm on my 33rd IQ so far... Riches, here I come!"

['mænjuːəl voʊt] - noun, verb

(1) A vote cast in the Beauty Contest purely on the player's own preferences, after he or she has looked through every entry in the category, and uninfluenced by advertising.
(2) To go through the various categories in the Beauty Contest, choosing a manual vote for each category.

Example Usage:

(1) "I tried to ask this guy on the Neoboards to vote for me, but he said I'd already got his manual vote anyway, which I thought was kind of sweet."
(2) "I'm manual voting, so please don't clog up this thread with 'Vote for me!' posts."

Abbreviation for "Mystery Island", specifically referring to that land's Altador Cup team.

(1) Abbreviation for "Noxious Carrot Blade". A Battledome weapon that does more damage if used against a Lupe.
(2) Abbreviation for "No Chat Board". A thread on the Neoboards that sticks to the practicalities of its topic (such as posting restock times) and doesn't veer off into a discussion on unrelated subjects.

Example Usage:

(1) "NCB might be tactical against a Lupe opponent if it wasn't so pricey."
(2) "This is the NCB for this topic. If you just want to chat, there's a less strict version at..."

Another term for the Neopian stock market index; a measure of how well stocks in general are performing.

A chain of hotels to which you can send your Neopet if you need to be away from the site for a few days. Room service ensures your pet will be well-fed in your absence.

Neopets Jr

Neopets Jr

['niːoʊpɛts 'dʒuːnjəɹ] - noun

(1) A simplified Neopets interface designed specifically for younger users, low on text and high on images, with links to the most important parts of the site.
(2) Of an account, the state of being marked as belonging to a child without a parental permission slip (and thus unable to access some features, such as the Neoboards). Older users' accounts may occasionally be mistakenly placed in this category by over-keen site moderators.

Example Usage:

(1) "I wish Neopets Junior came with a really obvious link to your gallery! My sister comes and bugs me EVERY time she wants to view hers."
(2) "I'm having to post on the boards from my side account for the time being. For some reason, the mods bumped my main account down to Neopets Junior yesterday."

Neopets.com's weekly fanwork newsletter, featuring articles, stories, serials and comics submitted by ordinary users. In the "Editorial" section, a member of the Neopets Team answers users' questions.

An activity or event whose main purpose is to take Neopoints away from users, in order to reduce the amount of Neopoints in the site economy. This slows down inflation (Neopoints becoming worth less and less over time).

Examples of Neopoint sinks include the Lever of Doom and Save the Wheels.

Example Usage:

"The Wheel of Extravagance looks like it'll be a good Neopoint sink -- it costs 100,000 NP just for one spin!"

A player who is new to Neopets, and still finding their way around the site.

Abbreviation for "Non-Silent Vote". Since you cannot see how many people have voted for your entry while the Beauty Contest is in progress, many players keep a count of how many people have mentioned voting for their entries as a crude measure of how well they're doing.
