Mystery Capsules
On June 11, 2014, all of the existing Mystery Capsules were retired from the NC Mall, and in their place new capsules began to be released that focused more on exclusive items and older re-releases.
Opening Capsules
Once you have a Mystery Capsule that you wish to open, visit your Inventory after you purchase the capsule or move it out of storage.
Make sure you toggle the "NC" view, otherwise by default you will only see Neopoint items:
Then, once you see the capsule, click on it and in the pop-up, choose the "Open Capsule" option:
For the most part, you'll get the item (or items) that has been stashed inside. See our section on opening Re-Release Capsules for more specifics on the category selection.
Re-Release Capsules
Below is a list of each of the re-release capsules. Click on them to get a list of the possible re-releases:
Opening the Re-Release Capsules
When opening a capsule that gives out re-releases, you'll have the option to select what type of NC item you would like to receive, such as Clothing, Accessories, or Backgrounds & Trinkets.
The message at the top talking about shapes rattling around inside will indicate how many items you'll receive, which depends on the capsule. You can receive one item per category, so in some cases, you'll need to select multiple categories.
After selecting, you'll be able to confirm your choices:
And after confirming, you'll get your shiny new/old re-released Neocash items!
Gift Box Mystery Capsules
Gift Box Mystery Capsules (GBCs) were first introduced in July 2010. A GBC has been released once a month every month since September 2010; the only exception is April, in which some older versions are re-released at a discount instead (see the Spring Cleaning section a little lower).
Starting in March 2022, a new GBC is released at the start of every month and retires at the end of that month. Prior to this, they were usually released a little after the mid-month, and usually retire at the end of the month (or a few days after the start of the next month).
GBCs are used heavily in trading for other NC items since they provide guaranteed gift boxes each time they're opened (which are needed for trading NC items).
You can view all of the GBCs by visiting our Item Database. This particular link sorts them by their release date, starting with the most recently available capsule.
GBC Contents
Opening any GBC that was released on or after June 2014 will award the following:
- one random NC item currently for sale in the Mall for at least 150 NC
- two to four Basic Gift Boxes
- a chance at a limited edition gift box specific to that capsule
Old GBC Contents
GBCs released earlier than June 2014 were not as consistent: some awarded buyable items worth at least 200 or 250 NCs, while others did not award as many Basic Gift Boxes. Some of the earliest capsules did not guarantee any gift boxes at all!
The first GBC was the Gift Mystery Capsule in December 2008, which offered merely a chance of receiving an exclusive gift box. The first capsule to guarantee at least one gift box was the 3rd Birthday Gift Box Mystery Capsule in July 2010, and the first to guarantee at least two gift boxes was the Rainbow Watercolour Gift Box Mystery Capsule in June 2014.
Black Friday Sales
Starting in 2011, TNT has offered some kind of sale on GBCs on "Black Friday," which is the day after the fourth Thursday of November (this is the day after Thanksgiving in the United States). In the beginning, this sale was simply a discount. Starting in 2020, however, special GBCs with boosted abilities were offered on this day. For more information on the sales and Black Friday GBCs, see the Black Friday section of our NC Mall Sales guide.
Spring Cleaning Sales
At the end of April every year since 2012, some of the GBCs released in the previous calendar year are added back for sale in the NC Mall at reduced prices. These sales last for only one weekend.
There is no clear pattern to which 5 of the 11 capsules from the previous year get re-released for the sale. Perhaps it is just the favorites of whichever staff member is in charge of the sale that year!
For more information on these sales and the GBCs they included, see the Spring Cleaning section of our NC Mall Sales guide.
Other Sales
On rare occasions, TNT will put a GBC on sale for no obvious reason. For more information on these one-off sales, see the other sales section of our NC Mall Sales guide.
Limited Edition Item Capsules
These limited edition item capsules have several exclusive items that you can win from opening the capsules. You are guaranteed to get one item from a certain set of items, and have a chance of receiving a second, bonus item from a different set of items. You can view each capsule's contents on its Item Database page, or you can view them all at once (including old-style mystery capsules) in our Mystery Capsule listing.
"Old" Mystery Capsules
The original mystery capsules, first introduced in the fall of 2007, worked a bit differently than any of the capsules we are used to today. Rather than having exclusive item pools, they would randomly give one or more items currently on sale in the Neocash mall whose total value was worth at least an amount of Neocash equal to the cost of the capsule. Additionally, they would provide a chance at either a NC item exclusive to that capsule or a virtual prize code.
Opening one of these older capsules will still function as they originally did, before they were outmoded by the re-release, GBC, and LE capsules we see today. You can view their contents in our Mystery Capsule listing in our Item Database.
