Have you ever wondered how some of the weird and wonderful items on Neopets came to be? Well, thanks to the invention of Mysterious Morphing Experiments, you can now actually watch your items take shape!

Below is some basic information on the MMEs, what they do, and how they work. We also have a complete listing of past Experiments and all of their stages.

What is an MME?

Mysterious Morphing Experiments (called MMEs for short) are unique items that are periodically released for sale to the NC Mall. The items can be identified by the little "?" in the bottom right corner of the image (or by the complicated acronyms in its name). They are typically only available to be purchased for a week or two before they retire—and then begin morphing into other items! They will undergo a series of changes before morphing into their final form (and then granting you all of the previous forms you had seen into your inventory).

Finding The Item ID

When MMEs are sold in the Mall, they'll often come in several different item IDs. This is important because if one of the future stages splits off into different items (for example, Stage 2a, 2b, and 2c), then the ID determines which "branch" of items you get.

You can find IDs when you're purchasing by using the Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Google Chrome browser. The method varies based on whether you're viewing the revamped NC Mall layout (as of June 17, 2025), or viewing in the original Mall layout.

New Mall Layout

In the new Mall, MMEs are listed for sale within the Specialty shop, which you can navigate to under the Specialty menu option and then clicking Specialty.

The Shopping Cart in the new Mall stacks items of the same ID, so you can only have as many separate instances of the MME appearing in your cart as there are possible paths—usually just two. When you first add two MMEs to your cart, you will always first get one of the lower ID, and then the second will always be of the other ID. The cart is sorted by ID, so it will always be lowest ID on top, and highest ID on the bottom. You can then adjust the quantities or remove either depending on how many of each path you desire to purchase.

The MMEs must be added twice from the Mall to get each to appear in your cart first before you start adjusting any quantities to guarantee one of each. If you add only one to your cart and then change the quantity, it can become either ID— but if you continue to add more to your cart until two instances appear, your cart will reorder to have the lower ID on top and the higher ID listed second. Then you can again change quantities as desired.

Old NC Mall Layout

The old Mall layout can be found by navigating to the MME page, and then utilising the menu within there—the actual MMEs for purchase are usually listed in the Specialty shop, or you can search by name.

Add a bunch of MMEs to your cart and then view your cart. Starting from where it says "Neopets Items," highlight downward, making sure you're highlighting the images of the items.

In Firefox, right-click and select "View Selection Source." In Internet Explorer, right-click on anywhere but an image and select "View Selected Source." In Chrome, right-click and select "Inspect Element."

You're looking for the part that says <img id="XXXXX" class="toggle_img"...> The XXXXX is the ID.

Starting The Transformation

Each Experiment will remain in its first "stage" while it is still on sale, to give everybody who wants one time to purchase. After it retires from the Mall, the item will begin to morph and change into its second stage.

The item will morph no matter where it is—on your pet, in your closet, in your inventory, etc.—and every single one will morph at the same time. So if you bought one and used it to customise your pet, then bought a second one several days later to put into your gallery, both items would evolve at the same time.

The Stages

How many times each Experiment will morph is a surprise, but TNT promised that regular ones will have at least three different stages. MiniMMEs have fewer stages. At certain points during an Experiment's metamorphosis, there may be more than one possible outcome.

Most often, an MME will undergo four stage changes to reach its final form. The first stage, which is the item when it is still for sale in the Mall, is always have -S1 in its name. After it retires and morphs for the first time into the second stage, the item will become something else and the name will contain -S2a, -S2b, or -S2c, etc., with the letter indicating which branch it has morphed into (a naming convention which started with MME5 and has been used consistently since MME9.)

The following are two examples of Experiments that each has two different branches—an "a" and a "b" line of morphing. Note for the first example, stage 4 was the same item for both branches.

Examples of Stages: MME19 and MME29

For another example, for Tiny Striped Wonderworm Experiment (MME1), the first four stages were singular morphs, and during the fifth stage there were two different branches it could have morphed into, although the only difference between the two resulting items was that one featured a blue butterfly whilst the other had an orange one, while both names contained just -S5.

There is no way of telling which path an Experiment will take, which is all part of the fun.

After It's Finished

The really cool part is that once the Experiment has finished morphing and reaches its final stage, all of its previous forms that your MME item(s) morphed into will appear as separate items in your inventory. That means you would receive all items of the particular path your MME item took. Owning one Experiment will result in you receiving one full path set at the end; owning two means two full path sets, etc. These items are just like regular items and won't change at all in the future. At this time, the item images will also update to have the question marks removed.

Using the example image above for MME19, for someone who's Experiment first morphed into MME19-S2a, at the end they would receive items: MME19-S1, MME19-S2a, MME19-S3a, MME19-S4, and MME19-S5a. If someone had two Experiments with one of each item ID of MME19, upon morphing conclusion they would receive: 2x MME19-S1, MME19-S2a, MME19-S2b, MME19-S3a, MME19-S3b, 2x MME19-S4, MME19-S5a, and MME19-S5b.

Bonus Item

If you have an Experiment, you have a chance at a limited edition bonus item once it finishes morphing. A bonus may be earned from any ID of an MME—it's randomly awarded after morphing concludes. Users will often buy multiples of Experiments to try and increase their chances of getting the bonus. The bonus item name contains -B. (Note that a few bonus names over the years have included an erroneous number and appear instead as -B1, but there have been no bonus variations—only one possible per Experiment.)

Giving Them To Friends

Mysterious Morphing Experiments are available to be given to friends as a gift using the NC Mall Gift Boxes, even while they are in the process of morphing. If you give the item to a friend while it is still changing, then once it reaches its final stage, your friend will receive all of the related items as if they had bought it themselves, even if you didn't send it to them until it was already several stages into its transformation. Whoever owns the item when it matures fully will receive all the items. If you gift an MME to a friend after it is done morphing, then they will not receive all stages, they instead will only receive the one particular item sent.
