Heroes
You can build a party of three additional characters besides your Neopet Leader in Legends and Letters. These characters can be gained as loot from completing levels, from using Summon Tokens in the Rainbow Pond, and by completing some Achievements. These characters will also be the enemies you encounter in battle.
Characters classed as Ascension Materials will have a 'Material' icon on their image, similar to this:
These can only be gained from completing Monster Battles outside of the main story. They cannot be leveled, but are granted at their maximum possible star rating. These characters are intended to be used to ascend other characters in a quicker manner.
