Neopian Times Editorial Database

The Neopian Times Editorial is a (usually) weekly column hosted by The Neopets Team that answers questions direct from Neopians. Unfortunately, these Q&A's are not easily searched on the Neopets site, so we've created our own searchable database. Convenient for looking up past answers!

To search, just type something in the box below! (The fewer words, the better... usually.)

I wanted to ask if there was any way a system where we can VOLUNTARILY watch ads for Neocash could be implemented? The ads all around the site are just intrusive and end up being blocked anyway. If one would receive a small reward for each ad, one would be more inclined to watch. I would GLADLY watch ads all day for that and so would others! ~~1jediboy

Yes, we will be implementing ad rewards! The current plan is to not have any of those intrusive ads on mobile (but they'll be on desktop eventually). ~~gutterfoot

Will current art be kept when converting maps? Mystery Island changing is understandable since the art was so outdated, but other maps already have beautiful artwork (Faerieland, Krawk Island) and I wonder if it's really necessary to change the art? Granted, I don't understand how converting maps works, but I love some of the current art and don't want it gone.

Great question. We've actually gone back and forth on this. We've decided that, in order to get as many maps converted as quickly as possible, we'll only be updating the art for the most visually outdated maps over time. ~~van Doodle

What is the progress on allowing score submissions on converted games? ~~astrangespirit

In our next release (V0.3.2 - comin' at you soon!), we are going to have score submission turned back on for a couple of days. This will give our team some time to review the data and make sure that everything is working smoothly with our updated system before we push it out permanently. Fingers crossed! ~~gutterfoot

I'm curious how some of the games will be converted to become mobile friendly, specifically how the controls will change. Will it be like an on-screen control board sort of setup, or smth like that? ~~thedarkestwocky

At the moment, we're taking it one game at a time. You can see a few examples in the beta gamesroom right now! ~~van Doodle
We'd like to avoid an on-screen control board as much as possible. If there is a game with more extensive controls that is best played on desktop, we'll probably recommend it to be played that way instead of on mobile. ~~gutterfoot

Yooyuball and next year's Altador Cup, what is the current plan for these? Can we expect the same Yooyuball game to be transferred to mobile or a new and improved one? ~~ummagine3284

We've actually converted most of the Altador Cup games already, thinking we might have them done in time for this past years' event. Yooyuball is the only one remaining to finish. It'll will be the same Yooyuball game we all know and love! No major changes, unless they are small polish tweaks. ~~gutterfoot

Will the site themes we've unlocked through playing Neopets all these years go away with the conversion to the mobile version of the site? I will miss seeing the Werelupe King at the bottom of the page when using the Halloween theme. ~~valleypark

We're bringing all of the existing themes (plus some news ones eventually!) over to mobile, so don't worry! They may look different than the ones you're used to, but we hope you like them. :) ~~gutterfoot

Will we get an outbox in the mobile version? ~~longuylandgirl

Yes! It's desperately needed, but there are still questions of the best way for us to support an outbox on the backend. ~~van Doodle
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. Like Van Doodle said, there are some things our backend team has to figure out, but it's definitely a feature that we agree is absolutely necessary. ~~gutterfoot

Will the conversion of the SDB be just that, or are you planning on overhauling it completely and introduce new features based on users suggestions too? How about an ability to search the SDB by quantity or rarity? ~~sleepyholler

That feature is actually being designed right now! It's not final yet, but we are looking to add in rarity and quantity sorting options. ~~van Doodle

Hi Gutterfoot and the rest of dev team! How will the BD layout be changing on the mobile-friendly version? ~~t0tor0

Great question! We have definitely heard many concerns and requests over the years about Battledome and we are definitely taking the time to make sure it's an improvement. This means it won't be done by the end of the year, but since Battledome isn't flash there's no concerns of losing it before we make the improvements. ~~gutterfoot

ICan you give us some examples of things you've done/changed because of feedback from users? I know there's plenty of time for things to change but I guess I'm just not confident anything major will change.

The upcoming release includes lots of changes based on user feedback. I'm particulary happy that a user pointed out to us that the Bank Manager didn't greet users properly who had selected "other" as their preferred gender. We're also increasing the maximum number of pets visible on the homepage for wider screens. There are still fixes to things like the Neoboards I'd like to get to sooner rather than later. ~~van Doodle
We're going to be noting these user suggested changes in our release notes going forward! Thanks for the suggestion. ~~gutterfoot

Why are dailies/parts of the website that are not flash-based being converted first? We can still use the Classic layout for most things that don't require flash. Meanwhile, things with Flash show no signs of being updated - most of the maps and some Dailies (e.g. Kiko Pop, Coconut Shy, Test Your Strength, Bagatelle, Cork Gun Gallery, all the Wheels, etc). It makes it seem that that moving away from flash is not a priority for TNT (and this in turn creates a lot of user anxiety). An explanation will help allay concerns, so please tell us, what is the reason for this approach? ~~stargirl090

I will admit that we definitely overestimated how long it would take to convert each page within our team. The original goal was to convert dailies based on popularity to ensure that the most used ones were converted into the mobile-friendly layout. We've sinced changed our direction and are prioritizing flash pages, as you've mentioned, to make sure important flash-based features are converted in time. ~~gutterfoot

Are you going to extend CSS3 to petpages as well? There's some features such as media queries (being able to change the css depending on the width of the screen) that I'd love to be able to use on petpages. I try to make my petpages mobile friendly too, but it's hard without all the css tools that are out there! Thank you! ~~june_scarlet

That's my plan! I'm a frontend developer who lives on CSS3, so when I tried to customise a petpage the other day, it was a nightmare. There may be the odd exception that we can't add for security reasons, but I'm right there with you! When we bring these features in to petpages and make the layouts responsive for user lookups and pet lookups, existing custom code by users will probably break. We hope you'll be excited to flex your skills with the new tools available to revamp your lookups when the time comes! ~~van Doodle

Why does there seem to be a push to redo artwork for the beta? I understand some things need a redraw but it feels like other things are being redrawn (and taking your resources) without a clear reason. Like the shop wizard or event notifications. ~~herdygerdy

Hey Herdy! I wanted to address a bit of the mentality on redrawing beta art assets. In general, while converting the site, some art assets that people know and are accustomed to, may need to change because the way it's now displayed is a bit different behind the scenes. One of our goals for conversion is to make the website as flexible as possible for people who have different sized displays, including mobile devices. Art can be largely affected by this flexibility. Some art is easy to adjust, other times the process is more involved. When things get more involved is usually when you see a change to the art. In those instances, we try to keep updated art within the same spirit, but sometimes it needs to be changed significantly at a fundamental level.

In regards to the Super Shop Wizard, this is an instance where at times we need to update Icon-type art that was originally created to be viewed in your desktop browser. Now we need that same art to read at desktop size, mobile size, icon size, you name it! Take every icon-type asset on the site and force them to display at a size that's 2 or 3 times smaller and you start to lose the clarity they once had at their native sizes. With Super Shop Wizard being such an important aspect of the site, we knew that we wanted his art to be readable in a variety of instances. Knowing this, we didn't want to redesign him or anything. We just intended to update his art to make him visually clearer at smaller sizes. He just happens to be my favorite Neopet character as well! I like his design alot, so when trying to make him a bit more mobile friendly, it was important not to change too much. I just want to be able to clearly see my favorite wizard as clearly as possible!

When we do have to make new art, believe me, we take it seriously given the resources and time we do have. We would never just want to change it for the sake of changing it. That means that usually when we know we have to change something out, we try not to take the opportunity for granted and really look at the assets involved and make sure they work the way they need to.

This leads me to notifications art. The old notification icons needed to be updated for the conversion for many reasons. We had duplicate icons filling in for missing ones. Small art that was now being displayed larger. Icons that didn't make sense based on the information it was representing. Basically many issues we wanted to address. Because the icons are tied to the site themes we knew we would have to update 12 icons for every theme. Logistically that would be almost 200 icons total. When we looked at the problem we noted that notifications aren't always present for every user. If you aren't trading you'll never see a trade icon, if you aren't adopting you'll never see the adoption art. The issue was that these icons were meant to be notifications to inform the player of something specific, they are never always present and we would be spending a large amount of time updating art that isn't always visible to the user.

The solution was to make one set of icons that served the purpose of notifications in a more direct way. This way we have a consistent notification system, with clear art and iconography. No longer tied to themes, this would free up our resources to tackle all the new art we wanted to add for the new site themes.

I want to make it clear that we're constantly trying behind the scenes to make the future of this site as cool as it can be. From a user's standpoint a site in flux can be frustrating, I completely understand. When things change it can be a bit scary and a system shock for those that call this site home. So it's important to communicate that these changes are not done haphazardly, we consider so many factors to ensure what we're doing makes the most sense. ~~clammyhand

What is the future of Neohomes?! Will you be attempting to convert the current systems (Classics or V2), or deleting them entirely to create a Neohomes 3.0? ~~melieworm

I'm personally a fan of features in both Neohomes V1 and V2. I think the plan right now is a hybrid rather than converting both as-is. ~~van Doodle
This is correct. It would be a huge undertaking for us to convert both Neohomes V1 and V2 when what we really want to do is bring the best from both, along with frequently asked for features that don't exist in either, into a brand new Neohomes V3. If you spent NC on previous Neohome items, we'll make sure they are compatible with V3. ~~gutterfoot

Shouldn't dailies with full Flash components be higher priority than dailies without any Flash components or Flash components that are just cosmetic? such as the Wheels or Kiko Pop being higher priority than Coltzan's Shrine (no Flash) or Lottery and Apple Bobbing (has Flash on the page but serve no purpose/aren't integral) or are the dailies pages being converted over to HTML5 based on popularity? ~~perduco

We've tried a variety of methods for prioritizing dailies. Some have been converted because they were easy/fast to do (so that we can get you as much content as quickly as possible), some were used for training purposes. Flash component dailies are definitely higher priority at the moment. ~~van Doodle

I don't think that I've noticed any additional wearables be added to beta view since the initial release in April, though I assume that they are still actively being converted. Since they don't seem to be going live gradually over time, are there any plans to set them live in batches? Not all items convert correctly the first time, so it'd be nice to be able to give feedback on what is broken. ~~ziporen

We've actually been actively converting/testing items nonstop, but have fallen behind on specifically flagging the items as converted (as in ungreying them). It's something we definitely plan to address ASAP, so stay tuned. We'll also update roughly where we're at with wearables in a future NT editorial! ~~gutterfoot

Are there any more updates or fixes coming for Customisation? Beta Customisation has been buggy since the initial release and doesn't work properly or consistently for some of us. It also doesn't work reliably on Safari (default browser on iPhones and Macs) and this is especially frustrating since the latest version of Safari for desktop (Safari 14) has disabled Flash entirely so we can't even customise in Classic anymore unless we switch to a different browser. ~~stargirl089

We know how buggy the beta customisation app is, and we're bummed about it too. Right now we're looking for the right resources to tackle the problem, but it's definitely not something we can or will forget about. ~~van Doodle

Can we please be able to ctrl + click and open navbar links in new pages? It's driving me crazy. ~~beagums

We've already updated the beta to allow you to right click to open up navbar links in a new tab (some links will open immediately, without the usual dropdown options). However, once we're far enough along in the conversion to remove the "Leaving Beta" warning popups, most nav links will act like normal again, with ctrl-click and everything. ~~van Doodle

Will installing the Neopets app make my mobile device heavier? ~~bori_bomber

A common misconception of Neopets mobile is frequently that it will be an app or that it's mobile only. What we mean with the Neopets Mobile-Friendly Beta is that the site will now be responsive, meaning that users can access the same site on their phone and desktop (with obvious changes to the layout between the two). But to answer your question, no, when we make Neopets an app, it will not make your device heavier. :) ~~gutterfoot

Once the beta is over, can we still use the old version of the site by opting out of the new one on PC? I'd like to only use the mobile friendly site on my MOBILE, not PC. :) ~~thebananasaurus

Nope, sorry. Once the beta is ready for full release, this layout will exist site-wide. It's a responsive layout that changes depending on what device you're on. Several key navigation features aren't implemented yet, so we hope you'll warm up to it once it's fully complete. ~~van Doodle

If you're willing to take "fan designs" is there a way us non-staff can help with art? I miss the old days of avatars being released often and I like to make fake avatars, so if you want fan designs to use at all let me know! I know the Mara Lutari was based off a fan design. ~~__ninth_gate__

Is there a way we could get a list of current active TNT staffers and their roles in the Neopets community? The Neo-community has traditionally had a pretty good relationship/line of communication with TNT Staff, but I know lots of changes have happened over the past few years and there are now names I just don't know (or know what they do). I, for one, would love to get to know more about y'all! ~~fullonparanoid

Conversion is great and all, but it would be even better if these aspects of the site got some much needed content/improvements to go along with them even if they aren't core features like the inventory or neoboards. ~~rawbeee

Hi Aesop (and all at TNT) - I want to congratulate and thank you for making the effort to give us CC this year (even if in a less popular format) despite your Herculean task of the site conversion. I just wanted to point out that CC is for many of us the major event of the year, as it is the greatest motivator for buying/selling both in shops & auctions, plus playing dailies, and the strategy to prepare for CC is non-stop interest and fun for the whole year. We really hope that Perks will be back next year and maybe a fair point count for sticky snowballs. It would also be great if we could donate more than 15 items at a time. Anyway, CHAPEAU for all you do for us. ~~pilonet_t62

Hello TNT! I was planning to make a gallery on my side account, since I already have one on my main. Some of the items I wanted to keep on that gallery were the worms that players can get by going around Moltara. However, they are labeled 'no trade', so I can't send them from my main account. Can I collect those worms on my side? Or would that be against the rules? I do NOT intend to use them to get Red Moltites, I just want to display them on my gallery. Thank you, and I hope you are all having a nice day! c: ~~maga_m

Hello! Since those are no trade, you should be fine collecting those on a side for your gallery. Good luck!!

Hey there! 1. Can't wait to see the mobile site develop more and more. 2. Thanks to Aesop for all of the killer work with the NT. 3. Had a question about the caption contest. It used to be pretty regularly updated with the captions to vote on the last Tuesday of the month but over the last 2 months it has been irregular on the Thursday and Wednesday. As well the days at which the voting extends to has been irregular. Is it possible to go back to the regular schedule so it can be anticipated when to check to see if our captions made it and be prepared for the length of voting. Keep up the good work! - andypopo

1. Me too! 2. Thanks so much I really appreciate the support! 3. Glad you brought this up! The caption contest voting schedule has definitely been a bit erratic lately. From now on we will make sure there are at least 7 days of voting time before a new contest starts. This way everyone will have a full week to vote and can have a better idea of when voting will begin.
