New this year: according to the New Features dated June 29th, you can still participate even if you don't join a team. However, you will not be eligible for a signup prize or a final trophy unless you choose a team by the end of today.
You can still participate in the Altador Cup this year and play games to earn prizes if you don't sign up for a team, but you'll miss out on team-exclusive sign-up prizes, and on earning trophies if you don't sign up.
