The Void Within Episode 3: Sneak Preview + Exclusive Interview

TNT have posted a Portal update with a preview of Episode 3 of The Void Within, which returns this coming Tuesday, April 28! In addition, Jellyneo had the opportunity to do an exclusive interview about the plot with TNT Aesop.

Plot Timing
The blog post confirms the already known April 28 start date, but also newly announces the conclusion date of Tuesday, June 16. However, there will be "special bonus content appearing after the plot ends."

Chapters will last for one week at a time, extending from Tuesdays through the following Mondays. Based on the dates, this means there will be seven chapters of content.

Short Stories
In addition to the comics and dialogue we're already familiar with, the plot is adding a new concept called Short Stories. These will include an abridged summary accompanied by "delightful illustrations" for players "who don't feel as though they need every detail."

Adventure Pass
A new "battlepass-style progression system" will be introduced, offering "structured prize tiers" for accumulating plot points. A free path will be available to all Neopians, and an "expanded" path will be purchasable with Neocash. The article does not list any specific prizes, but does suggest "perhaps even a new avatar."

Concept Art
The blog includes a sampling of concept art for Nyx.

Check out the full blog for a few others!

Neocash Offerings
What sounds like a new Neocash event, Gifts from the Rift, will start alongside the plot on April 28.

Pre-existing plot-related items will also return to the NC Mall on April 28, and for the first day only will be on offer for 20% off.

And now, our exclusive interview with TNT Aesop!

JN: What activities will be available at launch? Are there any changes from the last time the plot was active?

TNT Aesop: When the plot resumes with Episode 3, a few different activities will be available in the first chapter at launch. To advance through Chapter 12 by reading comics, dialogue, and the newly added short stories, players must solve several jigsaw-style puzzles to help Luxinia sort through scattered fragments and unlock viewable memories. Void essence will also be collectable once again, and a new Battledome opponent will appear near the end of Chapter 12, the Voided Blighthound! As future chapters are released, new activities and battledome opponents will be rolled out along with them!

JN: Most Neopets plots take varying levels of inspiration from other media. (Curse of Maraqua and The Little Mermaid, Journey to the Lost Isle and The Lost World, etc.) What would you say are the inspirations for The Void Within?

TNT Aesop: The Void Within draws influence from a rather eclectic assortment of other media. One of our main goals at Neopets is to create stories that are enjoyable for both adults and children, so when it came to planning The Void Within, we found ourselves drawing from media such as Gravity Falls, Over the Garden Wall, and Avatar: The Last Airbender (Obligatory SECRET TUNNELLLLLL!). We love how these animated masterpieces manage to perfectly blend humour, action and emotion, a delicate balance we hoped to emulate in this plot.

When it comes to the sprawling world of Neopia and the new characters we are crafting within it, inspiration has been derived from writers like J.R.R. Tolkien and Terry Pratchett. Some of our worldbuilding strategies and new characters have been directly influenced by Tolkien, and much like Pratchett, we have been trying to keep comedy at the forefront while exploring more serious societal themes.

When it comes to certain antagonists and the Void, as well as what lurks within it…you'll find that some elements of the plot actually lean more into cosmic horror and dark fantasy. Many of our sources of inspiration come from Lovecraftian horror and works of creators such as Guillermo del Toro.

Some of our inspirations were also born out of other video games. Some character and worldbuilding inspirations were taken from titles such as Horizon Zero Dawn, while some gameplay and design choices come from games like Slay the Princess, God of War Ragnarok and Pokemon.

One last source of inspiration we drew from was actually not from other media, but what we see as a common player experience. Many Neopians have had to set aside their dailies for a time and leave the site to focus on life, family, and careers. When they return to Neopia, often years later, it can be disorienting how much has changed since their last visit. This experience was a large inspiration for Nyx and her character's origin of returning to a changed Neopia.

JN: You've spoken before about how the story elements changed during development, such as Nuria originally appearing. At what point were Orion and his side quests incorporated into the narrative?

TNT Aesop: Yes, quite a few changes have occurred during the course of development that drastically changed the original outline of the story. Orion and his side quests were incorporated into the narrative as the result of one of these changes, after several outline alterations had already been made. It's been a few years now, but to the best of our recollection, Orion and his side quests were first woven into the storyline we had been building a few months before he reappeared in the 2023 Advent Calendar event.

Initially, he was only planned to be featured in tie-in events. However, we found that his storyline began to organically merge with that of the main one we had been building in the plot. Once we realised that the pieces fit together so neatly and didn't require any rewrites or cuts, we felt that they were always meant to be one larger story.

JN: What are you most excited for players to experience in this final episode?

TNT Aesop: That is such a difficult question to answer without giving anything away! There are several major story moments that we are bursting with excitement about and simply cannot wait to see how the community reacts to them.

Even though we had to alter the plot outline a few times and make changes and cuts, we are thrilled to be able to include the level of detail we originally planned by incorporating the new medium of illustrated short stories, which we are really proud of and excited to share with players!

One thing we are particularly curious to see is how players respond to the post-plot content we have planned. Inquisitive players might even find some hidden hints to future Neopian tales at the end of the plot, if they are clever enough to unravel the mystery that is…

If we absolutely had to choose, it would probably be between seeing how players react to these top three moments:
  • The continuation of Baelia's journey
  • Exploring Ozzy's backstory through his memories
  • Nyx developing her powers, as well as her connection to the Void, and what that means for Neopia as a whole
JN: Any hints on the "major change to the world of Neopia" or the "return of a feature fans haven't seen in years" teased at PAX East?

TNT Aesop: We will specify that the major change to the world of Neopia has larger lore implications than anything, but there will still be visual changes along with it! Based on what we've seen, a few clever players may have already guessed the change, which is pretty exciting for our team! We love to see that people have been following along close enough to see where the breadcrumbs we've been planting are leading.

For the return of a feature fans haven't seen in years, we do want to temper expectations a bit. We do have a fun activity planned that longtime Neopets players might recognise from previous plots, but unfortunately, it's not anything as grand as Neohomes or Key Quest. We are still a small team, so any features that are large are still beyond our scope internally. All that being said, we do think that some players will be very excited by the return of an exciting activity/feature dependent on community involvement.

JN: After the plot concludes, what do you hope players take away? How do you want the plot to be remembered, and what do you hope is its legacy?

TNT Aesop: We hope that players are able to look back on it fondly, as a brief period of time where, even for just a moment, we recaptured some of that childhood magic that makes Neopets so special. Although the development process involved several major changes and revisions, such as dividing the plot up into separate episodes, our team is exceptionally proud of the story we devised, and we did our utmost to keep the heart of that story alive despite the changes.

We are also excited to see players' reactions when they look back on the earlier chapters of this plot, and connect the dots to see the seeds we planted and how they blossomed as the story progressed. In terms of legacy, our greatest hope is that this plot will act as a catalyst for future Neopian stories. Much of what we have been doing with this plot involves laying the groundwork for stories to come that we think fans will be eager to sink their teeth into.

"as a brief period of time"

Aesop has jokes lol.

Honestly, I'm glad the plot is coming to an end, but I am also cautiously excited for the changes and to see how it works. Hopefully this extended break has really helped them get into a cycle.

A whole post with cool sneak peeks about new features and the world of Neopia, but people can only focus on a Battlepass that's entirely optional. That's why we can't have good things INTENSIFIES

That pet at the bottom looks much more like a Gelert than a Varwolf to me, but with like..crystals growing out of its back or something? Definitely not a regular Void pet. Very intriguing.

When they said they're actually proud of this plot, that they tried to "recaptured some of that childhood magic that makes Neopets so special" and that they hope players will remember it fondly, I nearly choked laughing.

All I will remember about this plot is that:
- It paused a LOT, making it very forgettable,
- It felt more like a chore having to collect those daily blobs, constantly getting hospital notifications, beating weak BD opponents was just as efficient (if not more so) than beating tougher ones
- It was P2W as you could practically buy extra plot points with Neocash, which is disgusting.
Nothing about this plot felt even remotely nostalgic. The exact opposite, actually.
And now we're getting another NC tie-in with this battlepass nonsense. It better not be P2W too.

I was hoping they'd learn from this but they're actually proud of this?
Man, I can't wait for it to be June.
by biediep on April 24, 2026 10:53 AM NST
People are always gonna find something to complain about but I personally am excited for the return of the plot. Like allanmennezess said, this is a post with cool sneak peeks about what's coming, and people are just focused on an optional battlepass. Haters gonna hate I guess
by gamergirl33119 on April 24, 2026 11:05 AM NST
I know the battle pass is "optional," but I believe a reason for so much dislike is because resources and time had been put to that, something just to gain money and more p2w style benefits, vs other areas (especially plot areas.)

Also, I am not going to lie, I have a hard time seeing any influence from every series and author mentioned in this plot. But perhaps that comment is more for part 3 of the plot? (Though I won't lie, I don't think the majority of players will look back on the plot fondly, I don't even think many remember most of it at this point even...)

However, I am intrigued about the upcoming activity/feature. I understand it wont be that grand, but if its a returning feature, I am hoping its something people still have asked for.
by beezebeora on April 24, 2026 11:08 AM NST
As someone who missed out om the plot entirely, I'm quite excited to finally be able to participate and catch back up.

But this interview was... yikes. Very eyeroll-worthy bloated flavor text happening, and you could have fooled me with that entire essay about the inspiration because zero of that explanation showed nor was relevant. It's kinda . When I hear people talk about the plot, I don't hear anyone talk about the **plot**.

The teaser "confirming that thing may or may not be happening~" is just pointless at this point. No one cares anymore. Just say "stick around to find out!" and move on because we're all likely going to be disapppointed

Also, the battlepass thing is... really. Really. People are already pissed about this. And then introduce the pay to win, because of course. If the avatar isn't available / achievable for the masses there's going to be a riot.

"We hope that players are able to look back on it fondly, as a brief period of time where, even for just a moment, we recaptured some of that childhood magic that makes Neopets so special."

This was a very bold and tonedeaf statement to make.

But okay cool things are finally progressing and we'll have Apr-Jun to keep occupied. Thanks I guess.
by neo111186 on April 24, 2026 11:13 AM NST
To be honest, I'm not a fan of the paid battlepass thing either, but there are still plenty of things to be excited about
by gamergirl33119 on April 24, 2026 11:22 AM NST
Also also, I found the *addition* of "Short Stories" just incredulous. If people don't care about the plot, they're not going to care about the plot. (looks at GI and HSR) but sure divert more resources into creating more things for people to read, that they won't read. What? Your team wasn't stretched enough already? Why? If I wanted a TLDR there's community and fan wikias for that. Or you know, just do a quick 20 word logline for each chapter using existing graphics and be done with it.

If I was staff I'd be raging at how much extra "pointless" work was being done for this.
by neo111186 on April 24, 2026 11:23 AM NST
I mean, what's done is done, so I appreciate the optimism they put in this. Even if the plot was very rough, it's still a plot, I'd be proud too. After the wraith resurgence event I thought plots were done for good, and the fact we got one with comics and all is nice. So my best wishes for the finale, I'll be enjoying whatever happens!
by bonju on April 24, 2026 11:24 AM NST

by sbjorklund on April 24, 2026 11:31 AM NST
It's been two years. I'm sure I'll look back on some memes to enjoy, like Tall-tador, things that had a following or a community actually enjoying the ride. After so long though, I'm glad it's finally coming to an end.

I miss the Altador Cup...and who knows if it'll come back
by butterflyvj on April 24, 2026 11:36 AM NST
a brief period of time eh more then 2 years for a plot . oh joy even more points locked behind a paywall ... glad i went ham on points before they took their first break. got everything i wanted by then.

glad this disaster will be done and dusted in june and (hopefully) get the colors back in the world
by scr3wdriver on April 24, 2026 11:37 AM NST
My guess would be
* Short stories: part of the story that they couldn't afford to draw the comics for (despite the break), hence turning it into stories.
* Teaser image at the end: new BD enemy Voided Blighthound.

The interview doesn't excite me. I don't like any of the five main characters, so the continuation of their stories doesn't mean much to me. The major change is lore and visual related, if I guess correctly, it isn't exciting either. And the return of a past feature, if I guess correctly again, is only relevant to a specific community of players.

The most exciting thing is we have the end date for this plot.
by stormmonarch on April 24, 2026 11:48 AM NST
I just hope there are some exciting new prizes added to the prize shop. I have 5 plot points cookies in my sdb. 7 weeks, so I guess that I will be able to use those up.

I wasn't a plot hater, but after so much time has gone by, I cannot say I remember much?
by faellie_ridiculous on April 24, 2026 11:49 AM NST
Not counting all the plot teasers, this plot will be 2 years long by its end date. It officially started on June 17 2024 and will end on June 16 2026. During these two years, it would be on break more than being active.
Also, Aesop, two out of 26 years of Neopets existence shouldn't be considered as 'brief'.

"Bruh, if they're gonna release a paid battle pass it should be included for free to premium users."

I mean, the other day I caved and bought 1000 NC. As soon as I was brought back to the NC mall, I got hit by another DISABLE YOUR ADBLOCKER OR BUY PREMIUM!!! pop-up. I JUST spent more than a month's worth of Premium on the NC Mall and they still had the nerve to hit me with that GIVE US MONEY pop-up WHILE I was spending money lmao. It's disgusting.

If Premium gets free access to NC features then NC should come with the Premium feature of no ads, or at the very least no pop-up for a month, lol.
by biediep on April 24, 2026 2:49 PM NST
Pay to win what y'all? Void Battledome is single player, Plot Points can't earn you neopoints considering how cheap any multi-use or multi-buy items are in the store, and premium/NC exclusive items can be traded??? Like I get everything being paid is dumb but there's literally no benefit to spending money on this plot at all

I'm glad there's been a plot, it's had it's ups and downs, but I'm afraid I'm really just ready for it to conclude. But I'll be happy to have some sort of ending, and hopefully an end to the gray, that will be satisfying!

I liked the scrapped concept of Nyx having closed eyes like a normal Ashia. No one draws them with their eye closed anymore.

The plot is also forgettable. When they had their first hiatus, I didn't know it was coming back and missed pretty much all of Episode 2. I'm glad I am around to notice the 3rd episode is coming back, despite the plot being meh, I would like to get the trophies for the event.

I do like that they are putting more effort into this event, unlike the Lyra and the Lost Heirloom. That event I barely remember.

Also, I think very few will be looking back on the "plot" fondly. It's a mess, and their supposed inspirations do NOT come through at all.

Also, oh yay. ANOTHER cashgrab that will give paying players an advantage. (yes, extra points/prizes ARE an advantage). Remember when NC was first released and they promised it wouldn't do that? Now half the site is monetized.

Also, not looking forward to the ~summaries~ since I don't put it past them to use AI for that.

I apologise, I didn't read everything.. What stood out to me was Aesop admitting that they don't remember all the details from when the plot started, how it was originally drafted. Like.. Is this not a story they were proud of? This is a terrible way to write a story. You draft it, plan it, then stick to it. Not.. draft it, forget about everything and then see what sticks.. No wonder this plot is a mess XD
by apophis324 on April 25, 2026 12:51 AM NST
This is a mess. Put the plot out of its misery. I was HOPING they would release the rest of the chapters at once when it returns and I am NOT looking forward to another 1+ month of plot comics every week. I hope they learn from this and never do such an elaborate plot again. A 1 month plot or even just 1-2 week plot a few times a year is SO MUCH BETTER than this massive thing that was dragged out over the span of 2 years.

The final prizes better be good lol, I want compensation for sticking with this since it started.
by horses_46569 on April 25, 2026 12:53 AM NST
Also.. TNT can't seriously be so delusional to think that this plot will be thought back of fondly. I don't know who they spoke to that is so enthusiastic about the plot, putting together breadcrumbs from earlier chapters (should I re-read them or just pretend to know what's going on? > 3> to see where to story will lead and what major changed to Neopia are coming (I'm going to die of laughter if the major change is a permanently greyed out world of Neopia XD), but it certainly does not align with the general consensus that I've been seeing here in the comment section.
I liked Nyx' hair. That's.. Yes, I think that is all I like about this plot. Maybe a few items here and there and the return of old plot prizes that are now affordable again...

Maybe they just plucked from too many sources? I mean.. their amount of listed inspirations are almost TTRPG levels of worldbuilding (and we know how good TNT is with keeping up with a TTRPG- scale story).

My personal opinion, I think that it's good that they tried to do a new plot. I feel like the art and writing is not very good, but at least they tried?

Again, just my personal opinion, but I feel like I could have found this more endearing if there weren't so many faeries involved. I have a super hard time getting attached to them in any way. I love Neopets because of the Neopets. I often let myself forget faeries exist. I can't feel invested at all because I see these weird humanoid characters in every scene. I know that might seem minor to other people's complaints but maaaaaaan it really throws me off.

I am GLAD to see the effort though, they knew people missed plots and they tried something out. It wasn't a win this time but you never know? Maybe next time?

I'm kind of indifferent to the whole plot because I feel like... I mean, I've been here for as long as I have and I've never gotten to participate anyway, if I didn't at least sort of want to see where the plot was going I wouldn't do any of it at all, the fomo can't get me, I don't need new avatars themed around an event if I didn't play it, so.

And I kinda don't fault him for having to still pitch it, like I do think it would be worse at this point if TNT just fully dropped the plot because everyone hates it (I would be mad if they proved they can't follow through tbh anyway), and it would be weird if they were still pushing it through the door but going "yeah this is terrible, we've all done an awful job and everyone hates it anyway so there's no point," like realistically they do have to keep talking it up.

But like the section about their inspirations is insane, right? Like? None of that comes through at all? It makes sense to be like "what other works inspire you as a person" but that wasn't the question, and that's not how it was answered either. Not a single one of those things seems to have any bearing on what the plot actually is, in terms of technical approach. Least of all "taking a comedic approach to societal commentary," I feel like the surface level of this plot's commentary is hands down the absolute worst part of it, I don't care about its other imperfections. I would never have guessed someone promoting writing like this has even glanced at Pratchett's work.

Sorry my heart is still living in Curse of Maraqua... peak. Everything to do with this plot has made my eyes glaze over and I'll be very, very glad to have color back in the maps, BUT
- I love having a better idea of what a yurble can look like. finally interesting takes on their anatomy after how many years?
- I love the Dogglefox and Luperus even though they were there for like five minutes and their game always lagged for me
... that's most that comes to mind. what a rough plot, but you can't expect first tries to be perfect, and I've bigger problems elsewhere

@biediep
IMO the proportions of the silhouette match almost 1:1 with the Darigan Varwolf (especially the Daunting Darigan tokens). Either way, I'm very excited to see what it is!

Any news on if they fixed the altdor towers game so people can actually get the achievements without it crashing and taking multiple hours?

Typical comments from typical Neopet users.
People complaining about a battlepass they do NOT have to participate in. Site has to make money, what do you expect? Just about every game/app nowadays has features like this. It's nothing new. If yall want a site to play on stop your complaining. Money has to be involved, people can't work for free. Don't like it, don't participate?

Also, this plot hasn't been that bad? Sure it's dragged on but that's really the only issue I have with it. Y'all wanna talk about bad plots lets talk about the wraiths resurgence.
by dustin on April 25, 2026 2:51 PM NST
I think people would have been more understanding of the incredibly long plot breaks if it wasn't associated with the depressing greyness everywhere. I feel like a void-themed takeover would have gone over much better.

I'm torn between being sad we didn't get cute ponytail Nyx, and being happy they chose the design they did because the Nyx Wig is perfect for one of my pets, haha

by gweezunstad on April 25, 2026 7:08 PM NST
Commenting again to add something, because I forgot to say this earlier: by my comment above I didn't mean to imply the silhouette is literally of a Darigan Varwolf, it's CLEARLY not LOL. Just that it does feel fairly Varwolf-y to me?
by dokibori on April 25, 2026 7:50 PM NST
@dokibori It feels like a gelert to me. Long, skinny tail and ears, with a longer snout.

That‘s the Voided Blighthound, just a new BD challenger. It‘s not a new Neopet color.
by horses_46569 on April 25, 2026 9:55 PM NST
Just coming back with another addition because I found the TCG set and realized that that silhouette is definitely the blighthound design. Which... yeah, looks 100% Gelert-based in the TCG art. I was interpreting some of the void wisp bits as fangs in the silhouette above, but they're definitely not after seeing the card.

Personally disappointing, but oh well LOL. Though I do think it would be interesting if we eventually got these Battledome fight versions as tokens - they're a much more complex designs than the standard void ones (as pretty as those are). Either that or maybe clothes themed around them?

money is so funny in a rich!

i said in my survey when it first went on hiatus, as a premium member, that the writing was not good, the characters were not developed, i had no investment in anything, and it was a lot of busy work.

i explicitly said i think monetizing would be unnecessary. and it is. like someone said, this is the most disillusioned i've ever been with TNT staff. this is a huge disrespect to actual writers and artists that don't play with their projects like food and hold it over people's heads.

pay for more plot points=more shop prizes=more neopoints. make this interview make sense. stop insulting ppl like Tolkien vs this sorry cash grab of a plot. i would be more than willing to pay for stuff if they didn't execute it all like this.

it's been incredibly disappointing, and i rejoined at the very start of the plot. ive been here the whole time, and i wish i wasn't bc now i feel an obligation to finish the last leg of this story which makes me want to empty my brain onto the floor. at least some neurons would fire, bc they dont when i read this plot. also children and adults? you got jokes.

i said in that feedback survey that monetizing would be silly to do here, and yet here they are. they aren't listening to the majority, and it feels disrespectful. full understanding and support to those who are just leaving the site after its done to take your own hiatus. you deserve it after being treated like a number and not a community.

tldr; thanks tnt, i hate it.

p.s. the fact that almost every user on here has said they dont put it past TNT to use AI summaries is also such a nasty thing to have your users come to the conclusion of--it shows what TNT truly is. im not saying its gonna happen, but multiple people are concerned. im very bothered by this money-grab which they could have redirected to increase the amount of premium users/develop mobile games, but they want more, and im glad others are voicing their disdain, bc you all de

Nothing about how the plot might be overlapping the Cup *again* and how we won't have the time to participate properly in both?

Did they cancel the Cup again? Will it be delayed? Integrated into the plot? Or will it be less time consuming? They want us to be "following along close enough to see the breadcrumbs", but like... how?! I barely read the story because I had so much stuff to do, on top of my regular dailies and the apps...
by petitehirondelline on April 26, 2026 5:27 AM NST
Everyone saying that we shouldn't be upset about the battlepass because we don't HAVE to use it is missing the point. Every single part of the site is monetized now. You literally cannot keep up with collections due to things like stamps being hidden behind paywalls. Sure, you could hope that they end up on the market... but they'll usually be a ridiculous price and only making the bot accounts richer when they inevitably buy a majority of them up.

Sooo...

As someone who missed out on the majority of past plots,
I decided to visit one of the more beloved ones for comparison.

(Hannah and the ice caves)

While I certainly see the potential for its characters and story,
I feel it's probably the nostalgic factor that has players clinging to it,
- Though I would love to hear the other side,
maybe there's context out there I've missed!

To me,
the art seemed as janky & inconsistent
(which I know TVW gets criticized for a lot)

the pace was WAY too rushed and incomplete,
the dialogue - painfully simplistic, repetitive & awkward throughout.

which left me with so many questions!

Why does Masila want Galem taken down?

Kanrik followed through on her wishes, why the bitterness??

Was he actually poisoned? Didn't seem to affect him all that much.

What was even the point of the "poison" when the leader had already agreed to spare his life??

How or why is being expelled from the club a worse fate?

No sweet reunion moment for Armin?

A major faerie can really be bested by a minor thief so easily?

Lol, how they managed to find the treasure straight away!

Hardly any explanation as to why Kanrik betrayed Hannah,
was he afraid of her claiming it for herself?

Did the sister even exist?! There was no follow up on her condition..

Were none of the guild members loyal to the previous leader? They simply accepted the new one, just like that?

(I could go on..)

I could probably look up character guides out there for explanations, but I shouldn't have to..
by stuffie on April 26, 2026 9:27 AM NST
I'm in no way defending the current story,
(none of the characters appealed, Nyx being shoved into the spotlight only further soured it for me)
There ARE plenty fair criticisms out there!

With TVW, I totally get et the annoyance with the poor character development and writing,

but honestly?
(I'm sure I'll get burned at the stakes for this)

Hannah didn't feel like that massive of an improvement either, imo

Which standards are we holding the current plot against,
that another messy one gets a pass & is even cherished?

Please help me understand ..

At the very least,
I'm enjoying the prize shop offerings and can appreciate that current TNT tried to make it more participatory
by including several tasks and even had it affect neopian lands & npcs to make it more 'immersive'
by stuffie on April 26, 2026 9:43 AM NST
One of the things I hate most about the new era of Neopets is how little respect TNT has for our time. Like, I LOATHE that about it. There's dailies, quest log, mobile games, mobile 'events' (that are just phoned in repetitions of the same thing over and over and over again) etc. etc. The amount of time all of this takes up is obscene. Anyone who gets excited about The Things stands to have more and more of their time sucked away, and will have to play mobile games that are literal garbage (although I do like FF).

They know we're nostalgic, they know we're devoted to our collections, etc. and rather than honor that by giving us some of what we love most - even if some of that is obtained through premium - instead they ruthlessly capitalize on our emotions, our completionism, our devotion to the site. It's so exploitative.

Neopets has become a FOMO overmonetized gamble game, and that's just the sad reality.

And Neopets has never been more monetized than it is now. Never in its entire history. So this idea that we should all just suck up every heinous cash grab TNT puts forth 'because sites cost money' holds less and less water with me every day.

I pay for premium, I regularly buy NC, I buy merch. People who don't, yet whine at me for complaining...
by neolodgeism on April 26, 2026 11:43 AM NST
And like others, I can't help but wonder what happened to all the feedback that was given, because much of what's spoken about in this interview is stuff that I directly spoke up against.
by neolodgeism on April 26, 2026 11:45 AM NST
Also, the void blighthound = I'm predicting a wearable style, probably for NC only.
by neolodgeism on April 26, 2026 11:46 AM NST
second comment. last was supposed to end with "you all deserve better".

i also have premium and buy NC maybe a little too liberally at times. how much more money do i need to fork over? why is everything being waved in front of my debit card??? it feels like youre taxing your playerbase for being loyal, which is whack. just a thought.
by zappflies on April 26, 2026 1:27 PM NST
Let's everyone please take care to express your thoughts without denigrating others who may have different thoughts. I've removed some of the harsher comments 😐
by kenny on April 26, 2026 6:31 PM NST JN Staff
@stuffie you answered your own question.

You've just said that a comic/plot which came out in 2024-2026 - in terms of storytelling, art, execution, plotholes, design, etc - is almost the same quality as or worse than something that came out in 2004.

The non-existent "standards" haven't been improved in over twenty years.

(I guess that could be said about the entire site in general.)

There was noticeable progression from the first plot (Virtupets) to the times plot comics started becoming a staple (CoM, BfM) in both art and execution.

There's one thing about keeping the 2000s art style and the nostalgic feel consistent, because that's the draw of Neopets. For the writing to still be so terrible to the point that this would not survive at all in either written or drawn form as a standalone story, like how most mini indie comics these days are made for the market - like please just hire an actual writer who knows how to write. The fanmade story entries in the Storytelling competition have more substance and stakes than this.

We don't need fancy. We don't need bloat. We just need clear story beat structures with stakes, and characters we actually care about.

That being said - I highly doubt anyone actually gives a dookie about a Neopets plot. It's secondary to the site activities (and prizes) it spurs. So perhaps they just decided the budget for a proper writer wasn't neccessary.

Side note: realized why the whole name drop of popular eldritch horror media annoyed me on top of there having been zero hints of it in the media. It's the equivalent of hashtag dumping trending stuff with zero relevance to the actual post and hoping something catches someone's interest.

For those that enjoy it and love the plot, cool. No one's stopping you from enjoying it either, same way nothing's stopping people who hate it from not playing. People are allowed to hold different opinions.

by carluucha on April 26, 2026 6:58 PM NST
I don't like it that's because they start it and pause it for twice, it should not be paused.
by blue82182001 on April 27, 2026 12:06 AM NST
If this whole plot and the 'Nyx's powers' tease have been a long con to reintroduce Defenders of Neopia, then it was all worth it imo
by anise_the_ghosted9 on April 27, 2026 10:24 PM NST
the plot could've been so nice if it was done right from the beginning. a lot of the "inspirations" that are quoted don't shine through unfortunately. but even then i liked the story and think that if the planned puzzles we're supposed to get in this last chapter were spaced more evenly and the wait in between was shorter this could've been great fun.
i'm a bit sad reading that they had to cut the story even more. i'm just sad in general that the potential wasn't realized fully.
nevertheless I am excited for the rest of the plot, especially the end of Baelias storyline!
