Today is Flotsam Day - in their honor, TNT have apparently decided to release a brand new species:




Maraquan

Here to echo what others are saying. It is cute, but not a Flotsam. Species outfit, petpet or something that is in the NC Mall that goes alongside your pet.

On a separate note, I wish TNT would release the pet day NC items as a superpack with items available for purchase individually. I won't gamble, but i absolutely would buy some of the pet day items individually. I think they'd make more money that way anyway.

I've gambled with three pet day caps before (2x Nimmo, 1x Quiggle) because I loved the backgrounds and I had some NC left over but only got species-specific wearables and I don't have either of those species. It put me off from buying any pet day capsules again in the future. Sick of everything being a gamble now, but there are items in past, current AND future pet day capsules that I'd 100% buy individually if I could.

@Suzuka I’ve suggested they make pet day capsules into grams that way people can select exactly which items they want. It stinks if you want like a background but you get stuck with items for a pet you don’t have because of the gambling

I really like it as...a new species, or a potential wearable for flotsams. But it is NOT a flotsam. I can't think of any other species where there's been nothing recognizable in them as maraquan.

Oh, that Mara Flotsam takes up almost the entire pet box lol, who needs a BG?... didn't want to center-align it either?... Idk, cool design. Was hoping for something a little more creative considering how much potential there is for Narwhals and Orcas with Flotsams but I guess this artist did the Mara Nimmo too. Same giant crustacean choice, same unfortunate alignment that'll never be fixed.

There are so many fantastic whales and dolphins they could've chosen to base the Maraquan design on but instead we get...hermit crab? At this point they should just release a crab/crustacean PB and we'll get a re-run for all the implicated Maraquans

The NC clothing has a great design though. I agree with the others; they should've switched and had the crab as an outfit! I cannot for the life of me parse what species that is if you hadn't said it was a Flotsam.

That Lisa Frank look makes me SO happy to have a Flotsam, omg. Now I just need to hope I remember it exists 3 months from now when the items are actually reasonable to buy... Also what is happening with the crab. Like who thought, hmm, how could we make this pet which is basically a dolphin into a sea creature? I know, a CRAB! Like... ugh. I would've loved just a prettier dolphin with some seashell details or a porpoise type design for Maraquan, I dunno', there's so much they could do that would've been better than this.

Wow, if I was big into Flotsams I'd be so disappointed. That looks NOTHING like a Flotsam. Can't say I'm surprised though. One of their newer artists seems seems to have difficulty taking inspiration from certain things & properly blend these elements with pets - only being able to create something entirely different (see: Adorable Kacheek, Fuzzy Vandagyre, Fluffy Dragon Acara, etc).

so the maraquan jetsam is a cool angler shark type creature but the flotsam is a CRAB ?? ;_; the art is nice but it barely even looks like a flotsam.. i would've loved a narwhal or something :-(

Escuse me, what????? How is _that_ a flotsam??? I'm not even fully mad about it being a crab, maraquan sometimes has those wacky choices, but that just doesn't even remotely look like a flotsam (and no, the mouth is not enough)

I wonder if they did this on purpose so that people who want a _real_ Maraquan Flotsam have to buy a ton of those capsules in hope they get the fullbody.

Back in the day, TNT just made aquatic versions of pets and would sometimes reference a specific animal if there was one that fit. Current TNT (for some reason) keeps insisting on using animals that have nothing to do with the pet in question. The Maraquan Nimmo also has this issue, but at least that one's funny in a "so bad it's good" kind of way. This is just, uh, bad.

On the plus side, I really love the Lisa Frank-esq outfit!

At first I thought this was a Maraquan Nimmo (I had forgotten they made a Maraquan Nimmo, which just so happens to also be a crab of the Japanese Spider variety). In those few seconds I actually thought it looked decent... and then I realized it was supposed to be a Flotsam?

Okay, so now that we're expanding Maraquan to aquatic species TNT seems to be struggling how to handle it. Like for land-based Neopets, if they didn't just make it into a mermaid or sea monster, they would change it into an aquatic creature with some appearance or trait relating to the land animal. But for aquatic species it's been a mixed bag. We've got some good ones like the Kiko and Jetsam (both fanmade designs, btw), but we also got ones like the Nimmo and now the Flotsam. If they're struggling to come up with another animal it's alright to go just use another species of the same animal with more notable traits. For example the Koi was made into a Lionfish and the Quiggle is made more toad-like (and a quadruped), and they're fine.

Being Flotsams are based on dolphins they had plenty of options. Like first obvious thought: Orca (aka Killer Whales). The biggest dolphin species with notable and unique markings. Even if they didn't want to go that obvious there's also quite a few smaller black-and-white dolphins (Hourglass, Dusky, White-beaked, White-sided, Peale's). There's also Spotted Dolphins (the Pantropical Spotted Dolphin being both spotted and black-and-white) and Pilot Whales (yeah, you wouldn't guess it, but the melon-foreheaded pilot whales are technically dolphins). Though, speaking of melon-heads, if we're to step back a classification to the superfamily dolphins are in, we get their cousins the River Dolphins (who have large beaks), Porpoises (flatter round faces), and the Monodontidae who split into two notable species: Beluga Whales (best known melon-forehead cetacean) and Narwhal (need I say more?).

Anyway we got 3 Species left to be painted Maraquan: Peophin, Tuskaninny, and Varwolf.

* Peophin they can do two ways. First is go with a real life seahorse species, I say either a Leafy Seadragon (the Maraquan Ixi barely counts as one so it shouldn't be an issue) or one/combination of the interesting Pipefish (Ghost, Rainbow Belly, Flagtail). Alternatively, being a hippocampus, there's the mythological route where they can do another similar aquatic creature like a Capricorn/Seagoat or an Asian Dragon.
* Tuskaninny best to stay within the pinniped order. Obvious choice would be Walrus, though that might cross into Mutant Tuskaninny territory. There's also the Elephant Seal with its notable snout, I'd say either one of these two (or combine them?) would make for a fine Maraquan Tuskaninny.
* Varwolf interestingly enough gives us another chance at an orca. No, i don't mean just make it into an orca, I mean I guess they could. But what I'm talking about is an Inuit mythology creature called the Akhlut which is a cross between an orca and wolf (technically in the original mythology it was a changeling that was an orca in the water and wolf on land; but a lot of modern day interpretations make it an awesome looking hybrid creature).

There is not a single part of that Maraquan design that says "This is a different colored Flotsam" to me. The design might have been cool as a new petpet, but as a Flotsam- definitely not.

This just shows to me that they literally don‘t give a dang anymore, it‘s just about money and fuck any form of staying true to what neopets is about in the first place.

they're really showing that they just don't care about neopets, it seems. the art is good but the thought and consideration isn't there. the very MINIMUM they could have swapped this "maraquan" with the NC outfit. that at least would have kept the maraquan looking like a flotsam.

* Just Use Chanty's Designs Again: I thought I remembered seeing a Flotsam Orca once! Yeah, come non TNT, just use Chanty's design (https://www.neopets.com/~Renpi). You used their Jetsam, Kiko, and Koi design. You should have used their Nimmo design. And you should also use their Peophin and Tuskaninny design (sure its a narwhal and not a pinniped, but it looks good and that's what important)! Make this Hermit Crab design into a new Petpet (you can call it a "Flermitsam" to reference it was originally meant to be the Maraquan Flotsam).
* Flotsam Sushi: First off, let's not pretend there aren't other food made from Neopets; Blumaroo Steaks anyone (also recently one of my Neopets picked a "Pteri Kabob" as their Monthly Freebie Food)? BUT, if it makes you feel more comfortable, there is a thing called "Dolphin Sushi", but it isn't dolphin. Rather it's made from a tropical called the Mahi-mahi which is also called the "dolphinfish" due to their body shape. So now you can feel better.
* New Species: Thinking about it, a Hermit Crab-based Species would be a neat idea. So many potential playful Colour designs they could do with the shell home.
* Deep Sea Flotsam: Hm, I'm not sure if I would want the Deep Sea Flotsam as the Maraquan Flotsam. Too much of a copy of the Maraquan Jetsam who I feel the Flotsam should be treated the foil of. I'm not sure what the foil of a Angler Fish would be though, then again I and others already stated it should have stayed a cetacean.
* Lisa Frank Colour: Neat idea... though would there be a risk of running afoul copyright? Also obviously would need to rename the Colour, though I'm not sure if "Vintage" is the right word. Maybe "Glamorous"?

* Eh, that sounds more like a potential style for the Neopets that need Robot... which looks to only be the Varwolf.
* That said, Robot is one of the Colours which has the most potential for "Alt Colour Designs" even if all they did was give one Robot design style to a few others. Imagine some other Neopets in the coolor Robot Hissi/Jetsam style, cuter Robot Grundo/Kiko style, or quirky Robot Mynci/Xweetok style?

Yeah, that's not a Flotsam. It's not a bad design, it's just most definitely not a Flotsam. I know it may be hard to turn already aquatic Neopets into even more aquatic Neopets, but this is just a really really weird choice. As I saw while skimming through these comments: An orca Flotsam would have been a great idea. Heck, even basing one on the Delphin Petpet would have been a better idea than this. (Or, you know, make the Maraquan version that NC wearable they just released)

The only way to salvage this is to make a new, more Flotsam-like Maraquan Flotsam, turn this into a Petpet and make it an oversized wearable as we've seen with other Petpets before But those are just my two cents.

UGH how disappointing! It does NOT resemble a Flotsam in any stretch of the imagination! I really wanted them to do the fan made Orca version! I would have SO made that pet, I LOVE Orcas! And the NC wearable is pretty cool, but we already have a much cooler looking (IMHO) anglerfish looking Neopet.

Oh well, it's one less pet I have to think of or find a name for, come up with a personality and story for, find a petpet for, so on and so forth. Cuz I. Do. Not. Want.

My soul hurt, when you called it a monstrosity! Not because I necessarily love it, but because it was made from a flotsam! It’s kind of cute, in the sense that it’s a hermit crab (I assume), so yeah.. But I always considered Maraquan colored Neopets to be similar to Tyrannian colors. Kind of an unevolved version? I mean, I figured the already aquatic ones would be difficult to do, and when Nimmo was made into a crab..

Okay, it was new, and kind of cool. But making the flotsam another version of it? It just feels like they didn’t try, or just wanted to do what they wanted/thought up randomly. They could’ve made this a capsule outfit thing, in my opinion. Again, it is cute. I see the flotsam in the face, but if I didn’t know it was for Flotsam day, or looked for those features, I definitely wouldn’t have thought it was one.

The art is good, when I first saw the image I even thought it was a new petpet - but for a flotsam? This makes absolutely no sense. Maraquans, as well as mutants, deviate from the standard model of the species, but that doesn't mean they can make an unrelated thing and call it a flotsam... This is so disappointing. The flotsam is the only cetacean neopet we have, why did they do this?

I think the crab actually looks cool, that's definitely not a Flotsam though. The one-two punch of completely overwriting the species followed by making sushi out of them absolutely sent me. I guess we know what TNTs least favourite species is now. Did a Flotsam attack a young Dom's family in a dark alleyway or something?

Agree with everyone that the Mara Flotsam just doesn't resemble the species. The NC wearable would have been a perfectly acceptable Maraquan Flotsam. I'm very much against Pet Day NC caps (and honestly caps in general), so locking what I would consider to be the "real" Maraquan Flotsam behind real life currency is not great.

Lisa Frank outfit is cute, though I wish the rainbows were more like a partially transparent body paint rather than fully covering the base PB color.

all things become crab eventually.
I am obsessed with this pet, ngl, and desperately want one. but I do agree that it's *really* weird that they did this for the flotsam. why is dolphin become crab? I do not understand, especially cuz we got a sharkier shark out the mara jetsam. I do still intend on obtaining one, it's just an odd species assignment.

The artwork is actually pretty decent as crabs go, but it's just NOT in any way shape or form a Flotsam! Turning a cetacean into a crustacean is just plain wrong!!!

As many have stated, an orca would have been a much better choice for a Maraquan Flotsam.

Just another example of the art team being talented artists but having almost NO appreciation for the actual pet species/colors.

I also echo the thought that Pet Day NC would be soooo much better as Superpacks OR Grams so you don't have to end up with so many duplicates just trying to get a particular piece of an outfit.

I'll be real when I say that I LOVE seeing more crab Neopets on here and would gladly welcome more -- BUT, the Mara color for Flotsam ain't it. If anything, this could be an outfit (like, imagine the claws and legs as potential body horror / pseudo mutant materials!), and the capsule outfit is more fitting for the color, and even replicates the Mara Jetsam - which is interesting considering their own history from OG Neo.


And as much as I could easily say that you can use skunk / silver to replicate the orca / dolphin (plus those are way more affordable than a Mara P, I can see why people would want an official color to do this as well, instead of that and a horn-be-gone.


This actually fits the Mara Nimmo (or a Quiggle if the color didn't already exist) more.



I had a bittersweet feeling when I saw the Lisa Frank outfit, as that was one of my fave things as a kid. Buuuut now I've heard of some dark history about her and how she ran her business, and it's...Let's just say that I wish I didn't learn about that because it was a very fond childhood franchise, but to hear how tarnished it was by everything..? Yeah, it hurts.



All in all, this was...A lot of interesting choices, to put it lightly.

Why, oh why, did they do that to Flotsams? Like, why not make the anglerfish the PB color, I'm sorry but like, that is not a Flotsam, that's a crab, and it's not even the case of the MQ Nimmo that looks like the most abhorrent spider crab in existence but it really looks like if a Nimmo was a crab (MQ Nimmo my beloathed I love you). Like, not even the eyes resemble a Flotsam's anymore. That's just a fancy Crabula.
