NC Mall Revamp Survey + Sweepstakes

TNT has opened a survey on a NC Mall revamp, which they've begun sharing through social media. The survey covers questions about playstyle with the NC Mall and Neopets.com in general, as well as reactions to the new NC Mall layout.

Completing the survey will enter you into a "special sweepstakes" for "a chance to win exclusive Neocash (NC) prizes."

Bizarrely, the survey is being made widely available, and several of the questions relate to reactions to the new layout, but the revamp will initially only be available to a "select group of Neopians." The survey also links to a currently unviewable article on the Neopets Portal, so TNT may have released this prematurely. We'll update you when it seems ready or anything changes!

UPDATE, ~10:45am NST: The layout is now slowly rolling out widely to players, and the Portal article is now live.

The prizes for taking the survey have also been revealed. Horrifyingly, the top prize will go to just five respondents and includes the never-before-released Parchment Puzzler Avatar from 2005's Lost Desert Plot. They will also receive a Styling Studio Supplies (although the Deluxe version is pictured, the regular name + NC value is stated) and 300 NC.

Another 20 respondents will receive the Angelpuss avatar, which is labeled as "exclusive" but is not (and you probably already have it) along with a Styling Studio Prismatic Brush and 200 NC. Finally, another 50 respondents will receive a Summer Pastels Closet Essentials Mystery Capsule and 100 NC.

You will receive an entry into the sweepstakes for simply filling out the survey with the email attached to your Neopets account provided. According to the announcement, you can receive an additional entry by purchasing both Neocash and at least one NC item any time from now through July 4th.

The redesign looks like a developer who just implemented their alpha build into production with zero feedback or bug testing.

1. Doubled-up toolbars on top of one another
2. Hover over any menus in sequence - watch the dropdowns hop around the page
3. Search a string - the item name font is too big and gets truncated, so you can't see what part of the item your string matched
4. It's a dress-up module, but sure, collapse the pet preview ig
5. We have a "Purchase NC" button even though the hover icons for bank and NC balance already go to the Purchase NC page
6. We have two "Cart" buttons
7. No way to get to Future Fashions

The new layout seems ok. I'm only annoyed by the very fast animated menus. Now, they want to incentive people into doing a 42 questions survey to get a minuscular chance of getting an unreleased avatar and... and easy to get avatar.

This update was not ready for release a complete graphics mess; images incorrectly sized, too low resolution for desktop display and even the item tickets no longer fully show with so much padding, menus don't show fully and are cutoff when in size for hamburger button mode, cart is not longer correctly listing or adding totals. Please dear god for all that is holy put the nc mall back. it is a visual nauseating experience I cannot trust to buy anything now.
To NP staff please do not release any more updates until basic user testing on desktop & mobile managed by a professional trained in accessibility UI. Please restore prior css styles for showing images for sale and the shopping cart. The low res banners are not the worse since you never have to see them for long and scroll away but they only add more pixelated images & UI css style flaws to the look and feel of all the new mall. Seriously I want to code the fixes myself as trying to use the mall now gives me a migraine and heaps of frustration at the broken nav, broken item list styles, broken cart UI gets in the way of buying anything. Please please put it back, these UI and css errors are so bad and with software engineering experience I can see it needs css and UI fixes that can be easy. Dropping the image resizing, shrinking item images back to original sizes, and dropping the massive item list padding, reversing shopping cart display (so the total is a clear summation of items and the list is clearer to work with & remove all the pointless giant padding) then it might return to being more functional and pretty again.

I agree @bluelanternnz, they clearly didn't bother letting any software testers at it before implementing it. Other than the "One Click" purchase option, it doesn't reflect the way that players use the NC Mail, in my opinion.

Ew items can be added to the shopping cart but cannot be removed or the amounts updated correctly. Yikes that is bad coding, and rare to forget that users often want to edit the items in their cart more then just a +1 button.

Ah found out they hide most the shopping cart info and buttons on different screen sizes so tough luck to many. If you wonder why they on purpose remove core essential shopping cart functionality when you have a smaller window size it is because they did not care if you actually trusted the site or could use it to make purchases.

The new layout annoys me. What's with the unnecessary empty space? And the double scroll bars? Banner images are blurry. When you click any item, there is a momentary lag before the popup appears. It seems like they use some premade template.

Why would we be getting an avatar that most people already have? Huh...who puts these events together? The update is also all over the place...what a mess.

I had such high hopes when these people took over and I have been enjoying some aspects but these poorly planned out updates and NC releases with rampant glitches with no care in the world has me very worried...quick cash grabs and perhaps they will be selling the site again. Not sure but just seems very poor with the quality we have been getting.

I was fine with the general concept of an NC mall revamp; it hasn't really changed in the past decade, so maybe adding new categories for, say, wigs or contacts instead of tossing everything under "accessories" would be helpful. Or categories for Maraquan, Mutant, or Baby pets, to make it easier for those with limited customization options. But nope, we get categories for "Neggs" and "Evil" instead.

i barely used the nc mall before and i think this layout guarantees i never will, nor am i going through survey nonsense. for me it's too many items at once, and the carousels scrolling automatically is a little overwhelming. it's good that they pause when you hover over them, but when they aren't paused, they move so quickly and abruptly that it's actually really painful on the eyes - especially the "tnt favourites" category! i also find the pet preview is too small on my screen (1920 x 1080) that i can't make out what i'm looking at, and it can be kind of hard to even see there's a zoom button.

i'm also seeing that the theme is inconsistent - some site themes have yellow stars added to their header, some of them don't. some of the ones that do don't look very good (mystery island, neopian times) while some that might actually look okay (including the plain colours, which already incorporate stars) just don't have them. i think it's a problem with mystery island especially, because the header links are already yellow, so the yellow stars behind them really make it harder to visually distinguish. this is also a little bit of a problem with destroyed faerie festival - the links are pale, so again parts of the letters blend into the stars behind them.

this is like... an anti-accessibility update.

The new NC Mall looks ok. I think it's easier to find things now, and the wishlist option is nice.
The updated cart is nice, when you have multiples of the same item in your cart it's no longer one long list, and you can -1 or +1 in the cart which is nice.

I don't like that they made the banner with upcoming stuff and their release dates so much smaller, and I just hate the mobile-friendly layout in general on desktop, but...

The actual space to display items is extremely squeezed on a smaller laptop screen. Makes it very very hard to scroll through. WHY so many banners and menus ALL ON TOP? Why the completely unnecessary stuff like "TNT's favorite" at the bottom, taking even more screen space?

oh, addition - if i zoom in to try and make the layout look less overwhelming (say 120%) then the pet preview pane widens to the full page once opened. it's still hard to see the smaller thumbnail preview at this size, and the header cuts off the top so that i can barely see the dropdown menu to select a pet, and i can't exit it without zooming out. zooming in further doesn't fix this or force the layout into a smaller form, it just keeps going until even the pet preview is shoved completely offscreen.

i know a lot of layouts will break in some form if you zoom in too far, but zooming *is* useful for a number of people - whether they have to keep their screen farther away from them than the average user, they struggle to read the baseline font size, or otherwise. it's hard to for sure guarantee your layout will be perfect for all experiences, but zooming in for just a little more comfort shouldn't break a key element.

as it is, a 1920 x 1080 desktop user who wants to properly use the pet preview feature can only zoom in... 110%. abysmal. for comparison: on jellyneo, i can zoom in 180% before anything substantially breaks - the comment box gets cut off at 190%, to be specific - and then at 200% it converts to a phone-size layout. zooming in beyond 200% cuts off the comment box again, but on that note, this comment box is resizable. not sure if that's a browser feature or site layout choice, but it means that even if i zoom in to the point that it's cut off, i can scroll around and fix it! it's a little fiddly and not perfect, but it's more than nothing.

The moving banner is a lawsuit waiting to happen when it triggers seizures for moving around too much and too fast! I could barely read through the navigation tutorial without getting sick. I used this as an opportunity to let TNT know that NC purchases are INVESTMENTS and the rest of the site needs some catering to before I'm purchasing anything with my doll hairs.

I'm on an iMac+Chrome and didn't have any of the formatting issues. My links, fonts, and images are great. I do actually like the different shopping cart functions, it mimics retail sites. Previews/try-on's worked for me in the past about 1/50 times but I had zero issues with the update. Overall I think it's way better but won't be using it unless I'm granted NC or the rest of the site improves... drastically.

I rarely use the NC Mall but this change is not encouraging my changing that anytime soon. Most of the screen feels like it's being taken up by the banners/drop down menus. Like between the Neopets banner at the top with the shops, etc., with the NC Mall Home banner and then the NC Mall Album banner it's so much wasted visual space. I have to almost do a half scroll in order to see one row of items, which is annoying.

Also why is it so difficult to exit pet previews?? It took me several attempts to figure out to use the 'escape' button and even then, I had to hit mine several times for it to work.

Wouldn't say I find the items scrolling past to be exceptionally fast, but that's very much a YMMV situation.

I dislike the junk items still being in the mall. The rapid release of new items is serious overload, and putting bgs, fgs & filters in pet capsules stink. Some of us have to squeeze our budget as it is to afford NC. It's gotten very money grabbing crazy. So I still feel disappointed. And neutral about the design.

perhaps I'm fortunate in that I don't seem to be having the formatting issues that other users are having, and there's no lag for me when I click an item or open/close the preview. I think there's room for tweaks/improvement (literally what is the "evil" category?? put something actually useful there like unique pets), but I don't find the new layout to be absolutely awful. I'm no UX designer tho so maybe my bar is just in the basement lolol

The old layout wasnt even bad; the biggest move would have been to make sure it matched the new layout. This one is too cluttered, and it looks like someone wanted to be ambitious with coding, but instead of making it fit the Neopets website layout, they decided to code a brand new website. This doesnt look like a neopets page, this looks like another website all together.

I mentioned it in the survey but the shop didnt need the grand overhaul to this level IMO, small QOL fixes (remove a lot of dead items like keyquest and music/non java items that have no use but could still be purched for starters.) Where there are numerous spots on the site that need the overhaul then the shop, something that fixed or not will not increase buyers imo.

So many dead spots, links to flash focused areas- even their trudy doesnt have a link to it anywhere. The site is very unfriendly to younger players and new players of the game, and its the older fans who are managing to navigate and understand the site because of being used to the jank. There is a lot that can be fixed, but this update was a step back in terms of use. Its not friendly to current users, it wont be friendly to new users either. This wont bring in more NC purchases, this will more or less deter the current useage now IMO.

I realy don't like this redesign. I wanted LESS clicking, not more. With the new layout, you can't just scroll/slide down the screen to see more items in the category, and instead you need to click for page 2, 3, etc. Visually, it looks more confusing somehow than the old layout. I think the old layout was fine and just needed the menus/surroundings to match the STYLE of the new layout. Not to redo it like this.
