Altador Cup Scaled Back, to Begin June 3rd

TNT has posted a big update about this year's Altador Cup: in short, it will be a scaled down to a 19-day attendance event (think Advent Calendar—show up and collect a prize), rather than the month long gaming event in year's past. It also returns to its normal June runtime.

Here's the original announcement:

Dear Neopians!

We know you’re all excited as we prepare for the upcoming events in Neopia like the return of The Void Within, the mysterious origins of the elusive Varwolf, and the Altador Cup.

We want to acknowledge that the Altador Cup has room for improvement, and we’re working hard to address those areas so that players can enjoy the event even more. This involves a lot of behind-the-scenes work from our team, including our devs, artists, designers, and QA, to make that a reality.

In response to player feedback and with the plot just around the corner, we’ve decided to scale the Altador Cup for 2025 down to a mini-event to ensure that your time playing feels engaging and fun.

While the Cup will look different this year, there’s still a lot of fun to be had! The Altador Cup Mini-Event will begin early June and run for a total of 19 days. To help keep you informed and to answer any burning questions, review the Altador Cup: The Grey Year FAQ.

We understand that these changes are a bit of an adjustment, but we want future Altador Cup events to live up to both your vision and ours, and to make that happen, our team needs time to implement improvements thoughtfully. We appreciate all of your feedback and look forward to seeing you at this year’s mini-event!

More importantly, an FAQ has gone up, giving some hints about what this mini-event will entail:

You can participate in the Altador Cup: The Grey Year event by claiming daily prizes and reading optional lore drops about each of the 19 different teams! There will be an avatar for all and a trophy to showcase that you were around for the Altador Cup that never was. (Just be sure to claim all of your prizes before June 30th!)

Each day, there will be two new prizes: 1 regular and 1 Premium. If you are already Premium, all you have to do is click the Claim button to receive both prizes. If you are not Premium, you can claim the regular prize at any time and return for the Premium one if you decided to sign up for it later. All Premium Prizes can be claimed at any time before the end of the month (June 30th).

In short, there will not be the usual game playing or team tournament event. The TNT Staff Tournament has also been canceled. The trophy described above is a single, untiered participation trophy. The usual team avatars (awarded for joining a particular team) will also not be available. And, there will not be any Sign Up prizes like in year's past (though those will continue next year and your participation count will be saved).

Important to note: all regular (non-Premium) prizes will be available to redeem at any point during the event and through the start of the Altador Cup in 2026! Meaning, you can participate in this event for a whole year. However, if you participate during the June 3-30th event, you will receive a bonus prize. Premium prizes are only available through June 30th.

This is some wild news! Let us know what you think in the comments! How do you want TNT to improve the Altador Cup in 2026?

Important note! The 2024 Altador Cup prize shops are closing on May 31st! If you do not redeem your remaining, spendable points by the end of this month, they will disappear! Make sure you claim all of your points from both the main shop and the staff tournament shop.

So it looks like no games to be played, which is fine by me! It's quite a relief, it always messes up my birthday.

I wish TVW would just be quietly pushed back to August or outright ended, rather than see the Cup become this!

TVW was already teetering alongside TWR as the worst plot ever. Wish this plot never happened
by pancake on May 7, 2025 4:15 PM NST
Finally, some change to the Altador Cup. After all these years of playing, it's become so boring each year honestly, that I have to force myself to play to get a trophy.
by puffkins2000 on May 7, 2025 4:17 PM NST
oh! i truly dislike the grind of the Cup so i don't mind, but this seems like a pretty huge break.
by comic_mischief on May 7, 2025 4:17 PM NST
Honestly, I don't mind. I wasn't particularly looking forward to grinding out the daily games for the points anyway. The Altador Cup wouldn't be as big of a slog if all the games weren't so dated and Yooyuball actually felt good to play.
by aryll on May 7, 2025 4:20 PM NST
It’s a relief not to have to play lots and lots of games. I’ve mostly moved to playing on tablet instead of PC and the Altador Cup’s games can be fairly painful on touch screen.
by cat on May 7, 2025 4:20 PM NST
Wow, interesting. I'm hoping they take the time to fix the issues the cup has faced in the past, like botting issues. I'm a little bummed about the trophy, since I always try and get AS every year. I'm assuming we're still going to join teams and there will be a podium?
by unicorns on May 7, 2025 4:21 PM NST
Welp, that's sad. I thought the AC was fun and had hoped they would rework the games to make them fun and not repetitive instead of removing them entirely.
by sailormoon on May 7, 2025 4:24 PM NST
If they do it properly, I think this mini event could end up being a nice transition into returning to a better TVW. I don't care about the repetitive games/tasks (both AC and TVW), maybe they can bring us something new with this new mini event?
by spongegrundo on May 7, 2025 4:24 PM NST
Sigh, hard not to feel like there are more things than ever that we have to pay real money for, in return for even less site content, outside of premium and gatcha.
by charharr on May 7, 2025 4:25 PM NST
I am extremely saddened to see the AC being cut back in such a dramatic fashion. It has always been long and difficult but nobody is forced to participate in it. I would rather see the boring Void plot shortened than lose the AC
by turkeybabe241 on May 7, 2025 4:26 PM NST
What a relief, lol. My participation in the Cup has pretty much been to hit Rank 1, if that. :V
by kiriska on May 7, 2025 4:26 PM NST
Oh, I think I misread this -- so NO teams, no podium, no games at all? Just answering trivia? Well shoot
by unicorns on May 7, 2025 4:30 PM NST
My guess is they're backed up and understaffed, therefore they don't have time to fix the AC this year - therefore they're doing a mini-event as a placeholder until they can make the AC run efficiently in the old school way next year.
by sailormoon on May 7, 2025 4:30 PM NST
The FAQ actually is helpful and informative:

Is this mini-event just for this year?

"Currently, that is the plan! TNT is working hard on many exciting features around Neopia, including a including a new and improved Altador Cup."
by sailormoon on May 7, 2025 4:32 PM NST
No AC?! Ugh! Its the one event I look forward to every year and now we're not getting it AT ALL?
by purplewarf on May 7, 2025 4:33 PM NST
I'm genuinely relieved as it was quite a grind to play the games, especially after long workdays!
I would wear out quite quickly; nothing like when I had forever-summers as a bored kid with a computer~
by wilted on May 7, 2025 4:37 PM NST
@unicorns: Don't even think you will have to answer trivia. Looks to be a simple attendance event!
by dave on May 7, 2025 4:42 PM NST JN Staff
The Altador Cup has needed adjustments for years. I'm glad they're working on it and that we'll have a less grindy event this year. And I loved the narrative connection with Vira and Ozzy heading to Altador.
Now when's the plot coming back, for God’s sake?
by allanmennezess on May 7, 2025 4:51 PM NST
Honestly, I'm not sad at all. I hated the Altador Cup with a passion.

Another log in daily and collect for nothing? How exciting...
by tryple74 on May 7, 2025 5:05 PM NST
I was looking forward to AC this year because it's just about the only games left on the site and it gives me something to do in the heat. This makes me feel sad.
by mohawk_lynx on May 7, 2025 5:09 PM NST
Sounds fine.
by academy on May 7, 2025 5:14 PM NST
I'm fine with this. I'm kind of neutral towards the AC, and I'd rather them focus their attention on TVW (and the Varwolf event) than spend time on an annual event that really needs to be revamped at its core anyway. Hoping for some good lore!
by dragonair23 on May 7, 2025 5:18 PM NST
Best decision. Cancel the cup tbh. It's the worst site event by far.
by archangel11891 on May 7, 2025 5:27 PM NST
Personally, this sounds great to me; I've never been keen on the AC, (1) since it is always during exam period so it has never been feasible for me to truly participate, and (2) I truly dread the Yooyuball minigame, and the minigames that I do find enjoyable give so little progress that it is nothing but a miserable grind-chore.

BUT I know the AC means a lot to several players, who are greatly dedicated to it, and I truly feel for them, and how this likely comes as a really unpleasant surprise to them.

Further, as it seems they are planning to rework the AC from next year on, I hope it is changed in such a way that it is enjoyable to those who have always adored it as-is, but also with some novelties to make it an actual engaging event for others like myself as well!
by piratewolfie on May 7, 2025 5:27 PM NST
So glad for this. I was really beginning to dislike the AC and only played to Rank 1. I'd be happy if they got rid of it and just did this version from now on.
by doggetts_back on May 7, 2025 5:27 PM NST
im kinda glad! the altador cup is such a chore and you basicaly have to make it your full-time job for an entire month in order to get any prizes... something more lore-focused would be fun, and i'd like the plot to get some progress
by sentehisshou on May 7, 2025 5:53 PM NST
this is crap, actually, I can't even begin to say how stupid this is. A "prize-claiming event?" just say you want repeat traffic but don't want to put in the effort to engage with players

man i hate what tnt has become
by purrmeister on May 7, 2025 5:54 PM NST
also the people claiming it's going to "come back next year" when they can "fix it" are living in a fantasy world I fear, dom will never re-implement something that takes actual effort to improve when he can just throw prizes in your face and call it a day
by purrmeister on May 7, 2025 5:55 PM NST
Sure why not, I also never enjoyed the AC. And still hoping they bring Daily Dare back one day. One day...
by bonju on May 7, 2025 5:56 PM NST
well thats disappointing. I hope everyone who wants this has a good time because this just tells me I don't have to bother with it this year so i won't.
I loved the sports energy of the cup, it made me WANT to try and work and keep playing but now? i just need to login? one less thing for me to do I guess...
by hdawg1995 on May 7, 2025 6:07 PM NST
I love the AC but for the past two years I haven't played because the games became unplayable. Checking in every day to get a prize sounds okay to me as long as they make the games playable next year.
by mariquita225 on May 7, 2025 6:08 PM NST
Rare TNT win
by rafa_potter on May 7, 2025 6:11 PM NST
Disappointing. Neopets isn’t even fun anymore. No longer a gaming site, now you just log in, click a button for participation and that’s it. What fun is there?
by mavix_ on May 7, 2025 6:12 PM NST
As much as I hated the AC, I did look forward to participating in it each year. It does need to be redone, but the fact that they are outright cancelling it.. doesn't look good. We know what happens when they take things down - they never come back.
by tallyburger on May 7, 2025 6:13 PM NST
I haven't played any of the AC games for the past three years after a long stretch as an All Star player. I had so many issues with all of them that I just gave up. I was never going to invest that kind of time to sling slushies to earn mediocre prizes. Not really a fan of the Yooyu or AC wearables.

I don't know what this event will look like but I guess I can perform a brief click click for a daily prize.

I am probably one of the few that did not have many complaints about the Void Within. Sure, it was imperfect, but I didn't think it quite earned the amount of vitriol directed toward it. I did everything I could daily and earned over 60k prize points. I thought the prizes were generally pretty good.
by faellie_ridiculous on May 7, 2025 6:13 PM NST
It's great that this year you won't have to play , I even think the Altador Cup is cool, but the games haven't been that good since they were converted to HTML5, they're already quite repetitive and with the bugs that occur it ends up making the Cup boring, it's good to have more time to fix the problems, I think the right thing to do this year is to focus on the plot, and not have 2 events at the same time, that only serves to give more lag
by gabistar on May 7, 2025 6:16 PM NST
Not gonna lie, I'm disappointed because I live for Yooyuball.
by starzy1 on May 7, 2025 6:24 PM NST
i've never been too good at games so this is sort of a relief for me but it is unfortunate for those who do like them! hopefully this break will let them find a nice give and take for everyone. i also recognize that neopets isnt what it used to be (not in a bad way! just have to respect its working with less) and maybe one event at a time is better for tnt.
by ohio__girl on May 7, 2025 6:27 PM NST
This sucks. I love AC. All they needed to do was lower the score caps a bit more
by galux1616 on May 7, 2025 6:29 PM NST

I hate the grind so I’m kinda interested to see what it’ll be like this year.
by toru_ on May 7, 2025 6:30 PM NST
I played it for the first time last year and found it extremely annoying to play those dumb games! Lol I have seen all the other users enjoying it but I do not understand they hype. Also maybe being forced to play sports, even on Neopets, always has revolted me
by tralala on May 7, 2025 6:30 PM NST
Seems they still haven't fixed the bug keeping me from viewing the prize shop :/
by fozfyre on May 7, 2025 6:33 PM NST
I'm actually really excited for this. I really suck at most Neopet games, including all the AC games so I never got fancy trophies or many points. I couldn't force myself to grind endlessly and it made me sad every year. This is awesome, give me loot and lore all the way
by animestar on May 7, 2025 6:35 PM NST
If this were any other year, I wouldn't call this a loss, but it feels like everything is being scaled back and that all these new, great features are just on the horizon. The Varwolf, the return of The Void Within, a new, improved Altador Cup, etc. Yet never any time frames for any of this. We just keep losing free stuff while a new NC capsule releases weekly.
by bacon on May 7, 2025 6:36 PM NST
Oh, and look at that, the FAQs say there will still be an NC Event this year. Good. Great.
by bacon on May 7, 2025 6:45 PM NST
I welcome this change for this year. The Altador Cup has needed a major overhaul for years, and even if it doesn't get that, I am still happy to not have to do all that grind this year.
by neolodgeism on May 7, 2025 6:49 PM NST
I stopped caring/playing AC games like 4 years ago.
I hope they really fix all the issues, YYB is quite difficult to play, all other three are just plain boring (SS get VERY laggy very fast). TNT should introduce new games to make it a bit more diverse, grinding for some measly points is not fun.
I really used to enjoy playing in the AC, never got a lot of points, buy at least I could manage to buy most prizes at least once (no stamps or the most expensive wearables), then it became unplayable.
As for the Varwolf, I wonder if its existences is in any capacity related to TVW. Looking forward for this yeas mini AC, free prizes are always welcome

This length of post is painful to read on mobile, can JN look to attempt to have shorter posts that allow users to find out the more detailed nuances on the links to the official announcements and pages themselves?
I feel like I’m scrolling an essay in these types of posts.
by leo_star20 on May 7, 2025 6:58 PM NST
So sad to see that the Altador Cup has been hit by greyification this year and is only a mini event. I look forward to the challenge it offers each year - making us work really hard to achieve our goals and making attaining them by that hard work, even sweeter. Do understand they need to work on it (and half expected the Staff Cup to be a casualty this year, for obvious reasons). Last year's AC was beset with glitches and problems both on computers and mobiles, which made it even more of a challenge to reach the gold all star trophy. WIll be nice to see it back in 2026, all glitch free and vastly improved - and hopefully equally challenging to the old format!
by cabbil_bane on May 7, 2025 7:03 PM NST
The demise of the Altador Cup makes me sad. There are players that return every year just to support their teams. If you don't like the AC - don't play. What is wrong with letting those of us that look forward to a sports event enjoy having game to play?
by wallythorp on May 7, 2025 7:06 PM NST
Man, I haven't redeemed ANY of my prize points yet!
by purplebin on May 7, 2025 7:23 PM NST
This is horrible news! There are a lot of players who some back each May to play in the AC in June. I have no confidence that it will come back improved in a year - both other games based events are gone. I love the camaraderie of the teams, the grind of the games to meet your personal and/or team goals. Every year waiting for them to finally introduce a regular bruce player (i.e. not mutant or faerie).
by sactokingsrule on May 7, 2025 7:36 PM NST
Oh, and I would suggest correcting the title of this post. The cup has not been scaled back; it has been eliminated. There are no games being played, we are not joining teams.
by sactokingsrule on May 7, 2025 7:37 PM NST
played the first one and disliked it and never interacted with it ever since ... shame about the staff cup thing it was easy money each year
by scr3wdriver on May 7, 2025 7:51 PM NST
Altador Cup used to be my hands-down favorite event on Neopets--until last year. Repeated captchas made me waste so much time playing for nothing. Cheating got worse. TNT never bothered to address the problems. Was not going to do Altador Cup this year. However, turning the Altador Cup into a shorter (best decision) mini event will definitely make it more fun for everyone. Good call.
by jollyquag on May 7, 2025 7:56 PM NST
The amount of people okay with this is baffling. This is not what players wanted when asking for scaling back, this is lazy and quite honestly a disgrace to the cup. Last year already sucked with the postponing of the cup and the lack of the NC portion, something I really enjoyed. I don’t like this one bit and was looking forward to playing these games this year, I love the AC games and you only get to play them once a year. I also don’t get all the hate on TVW plot, sure it’s stretched out but I’ve enjoyed the plot it’s not the worst by far and it’s given us access to some amazing prizes.
by singing1633 on May 7, 2025 8:25 PM NST
I don't personally like AC all that much (I've grinded it once for All Star in its entire run of existence) but...doesn't it drive a ton of engagement for the site? Even if they're stretched thin it seems foolish to not keep it going for the people who play way more during its run.
by imlostnthought on May 7, 2025 8:41 PM NST
I dread the Altador Cup every year, so I, personally, love the idea of not having to grind, but I don't want that at the expense of ruining things for people who enjoyed it. Hopefully this is just a step towards finding a better middle ground in the future.
by potatoesbasket on May 7, 2025 8:43 PM NST
this has to be total horse shit! how you going to cancel the AC games? I look forward to playing YYB every year. who cares about the dumb plot that's been voided. Bring back YYB!!
by snudycaisu on May 7, 2025 8:49 PM NST
Very upset about this mini 'event' if you can even call it that. And on the AC's 20th year?? They had all this time since the last cup ended to work on it and instead it was done doing nothing. The AC was what kept me going for YEARS on this site because it was the most fun I had. Now we have to wait ANOTHER entire year for TNT to somehow figure its shit out since it's a once yearly thing. I feel like this shows how out of touch the staff is with what their players actually LIKE
by bumblebee_flower on May 7, 2025 8:53 PM NST
I'm looking forward to the changes for this year. It's a very nice alternative to the daily grinding. I drive myself crazy every year, calculating over and over, to make sure I get Allstar. It's great to do something more relaxed this time around.
by josie on May 7, 2025 8:57 PM NST
Great. I work 36 hours a week. The AC was fun more fun in school when I had holidays around that time.

Now I don’t have the time to hit all star. Let alone hit enough points to get all collectibles for stamps.

I hope the prizes will be stamps for earlier years that I missed out on
by alltimemarr on May 7, 2025 9:22 PM NST
I look forward to the changes for next year. I really hope they fix the grind it was before.
by alltimemarr on May 7, 2025 9:26 PM NST
I only participated in the AC last year after never even getting to rank 1 the years prior. I grinded to All Star and even with the lowered requirements for AS in 2024, it was a damn chore. It was not fun AT ALL. Especially not with the captchas! It stressed me out and I really don‘t like that. I‘m stressed enough as is with work and real life responsibilities. Looking forward to what this year has in store.
by horses_46569 on May 7, 2025 9:27 PM NST
RIP the 2025 AC… Hope it comes back full swing next year, this kinda sucks but I get it for the sake of the plot.
by tonguesplittter on May 7, 2025 9:28 PM NST
I think the way the event is structured overall makes it impossible for it to not be manipulated somehow, and this won't really change unless the whole thing changes overall. But I also doubt they have the resources for that, so....

The simpler solution would make it so that the event no longer ties team performance to player actions altogether, and is just a sporting event that involves activities you can do to get stuff but doesn't require spending all day on it. So like what they're doing now with the Negg Festivalization of the event, but with more interactive elements.
by weirdee on May 7, 2025 9:30 PM NST
Nooo, mi yearly slushie slinging ;;;;

To the people that are happy that the Cup is gone and wish it'd never come back... I get that it's not for everyone, but it's not like you're forced to play it, you could already "not play it" anyways. Like, the way some of you talk, it seems as if TNT was threatening you with transmogrification or something. And most importantly:

This is not an actual event, this is basically nothing (based on the FAQ). It's sign in, claim prize, read some lore (optional!), done. They could at least let us play the minigames as "videogames" or something. And I wouldn't be so mad about it if some of you weren't asking for it to be permanent. You'd rather nobody have fun than let other people have fun with something you don't enjoy.

(I do agree that the AC needs reworks, but that's different from being forever deleted or replaced by something completely different)
(I'm just taking issue with the idea of wanting this to be permanent. I think it's not out of place in the context of the plot, although it could have some more gameplay to it, unless the plot is already covering that aspect by then)
by mornaistare on May 7, 2025 9:44 PM NST
i'm into it! TNT & players can take the time during this chill Altador Cup to brainstorm and collaborate on what an Altador Cup can look like instead of just what it has been for forever. Kudos to TNT for making this bold but smart decision!
by jawbutch on May 7, 2025 9:44 PM NST
@weirdee That's a nice middleground, but, I think there's a lot of people who love the competitive aspect of it and would want to keep it even if it's always at tampering risk.

I think a good solution for that would be to have users choose between being a "player" (competitive AC) or a "fan" (chill AC), and give both of them the same prizes with a reasonable amount of effort (the AC prize shop has always been crazy and I do think it needs to change)

by unicorns on May 7, 2025 10:01 PM NST
This was the one event I came back for yearly that I truly enjoyed, even though it does get a bit tedious. Not being able to choose a team and dedicate yourself to a specific world takes the novelty out of it for me, but I'm hoping this just paves the way to a better experience next year. Here's to hoping the Moltara comic gives me all the lore I need this year...

This is good for me as I'm facing some serious medical issues right now, but I feel bad for the people that look forward to the cup every year.

I hope they aren't just giving lip service saying it will be back next year with changes. My inclination is that we won't see it next year because they "aren't quite finished updating things". And then it will never be back. I guess we'll see.

by starberry1234 on May 8, 2025 1:54 AM NST
I was expecting something like them shortening the cup to two weeks and making the caps much lower (i.e. a max of 10 YYB games per day, 100 SOSD a day) and of course make the prizes much cheaper accordingly.
No games at all and basically just a second advent calendar is wild. Not sure how I feel about this.
But it sounds like it's only for one year while they figure out what to do with it..?

Last year was such a broken mess, I don't think TNT could have got away with running the identical format again. Will they be willing or able to restructure the AC for next year or just let it quietly die?

On a different note, it does look like TNT finally have somebody on staff who is able to communicate promptly and effectively with players. That's huge! I hope this trend continues.
by recklesse on May 8, 2025 2:33 AM NST
I find it kind of funny how many people are surprised about how many people don't care for the AC.
Sort of like real life where there are actually plenty of people who do not care about watching competitive sports and this is unfathomable to the people who do.

I'm another in the camp of This Is Fine. I've never liked the AC, way too involved and repetitive. I wouldn't miss it if they did away with it completely, but since there are plenty of people who do enjoy it, keep it.
If they use the resources now to make other bits of the website better and come back with a better AC for those who do like it next year, sounds like a win to me *and the crowd goes wild*

I've only had bad news all week. I wake up to this... This is GREAT!!!
I returned from a several years hiatus late last year and have dreaded the return of altador cup ever since (it was one of the reasons to finally let go of Neopets back in the days).

Now let's get the AAA challenge back.. oh no, wait. A lot of games don't work so ... Well, let's just celebrate then
by nathasja on May 8, 2025 4:14 AM NST
They could've just scaled it back to 1-3 games per day and base scores of your highscore. But no games at all? They just gave up? What is going on. There's not even a plot yet. There's nothing happening. It's all so boring.
by cuddlytoaster on May 8, 2025 4:26 AM NST
With how polarizing the AC seems to be, I understand why TNT wants to try a different approach. I wonder what the plan will be going forward.
by skatterbugged on May 8, 2025 4:29 AM NST
I don't like to watch sports IRL, and I have never wished that others can't watch, also.

I can't fathom that so many think its OK that I don't get to play the games event that I enjoy. why?
Team--work and play, chatting and interacting together.
Challenge--Do my best against a reasonable challenge (yah, not a shiny point for the AlCup).
Excell--Beat my previous score, count, metric of interest.
Competition--this one has never been straightforward, so we exercise our brains.
Creativity--what can we do together to make AlCup life more interesting? And fun? I'm glad a few arranged for such fun for so many!

Can a click with optional (possibly questionable) "lore" see and raise what I've put on the table?

Currently, no.

Later, as early as tomorrow, also no.

I'm so disappointed by this! I loved playing my first cup last year and found the games very entertaining. Shame they turned it into this

The Altador Cup gave me so much frustration as a kid that I feel like this is the universe making up for it.
by vic3_vic3_7 on May 8, 2025 5:35 AM NST
nice might actually participate this year then, grinding the same four games each year got boring.
by bedomi on May 8, 2025 5:41 AM NST
Eventually neopets just won't have any events beyond click to get prize events. But don't worry, they'll still be pushing out styles and new items every week and/or day
by artemisaltori on May 8, 2025 6:02 AM NST
Considering how nearly unplayable the games were last year, and the condition of the site now, there is no way it would be possible to have a normal AC this year.
by purplebin on May 8, 2025 6:04 AM NST
I'm in favor. The AC experience has deteriorated for a long time; every game suffered from the jump to HTML5, and the botters took it over ages ago and honest players were punished for it (dear god the shadowbans.) Giving the cup a break long enough to fix it was eventually going to be necessary and I don't mind this being the year. God knows there's things IRL I need to be focusing on this month lmao.
by breakingchains on May 8, 2025 6:20 AM NST
Absolutely devastated. The cup is my favorite event on neo by a WIDE margin. Really starting to get sick of this stupid plot

Fiximg games depends more on Ruffle rather than Neopets. We got a few more games fixed after ruffle updated. Now, daily dare again would be refresing

Taking this quote from their website, "we’ve decided to scale the Altador Cup for 2025 down to a mini-event to ensure that your time playing feels engaging and fun." LESS engaging and fun. Pppffft This is hilarious!
by katina_choovanski on May 8, 2025 6:48 AM NST
I'm happy to scale back on the games while also having some sort of event, especially if it's tied into the plot. It feels more fair to the players than just saying "no we're not doing anything, Altador Cup is gone forever."

With the number of glitches getting worse over the years and the fact that I don't have the time I did as a teen, it's been less satisfying to participate in the last 3-5 years of games. Needing to get double all-star to redeem just the top prize is ridiculous. I've gotten All-Star in 7 of the AC events (participated in 17 of them), and even I felt the FOMO.

In the future, I'd want the games fixed, meaning the problems with CAPTCHAs getting fixed, and issues with shadowbanning and the prize shop to be rebalanced to make the event more rewarding and less of a grind that literally takes hours and hours per day. And some way to get prizes from past events!
by coryldork on May 8, 2025 7:08 AM NST
i dont mind that we dont have the games this year, my wrists will be thankful LOL but i feel like we've had too many of these "one prize a day" events so i wish this was something else. there's so many junky event prizes already. sometimes this game feels like it's only about collecting junk and not about gameplay at all, like TVW, it should be fun even when you take out the prizes but it really isn't (so far, maybe it'll change)
by iloveeevee on May 8, 2025 7:33 AM NST
I don't understand the people happy about this. If you didn't like it, you didn't need to participate! There are absolutely ZERO harmful effects for skipping it completely. Plenty of people liked it, whether grinding it out every year or poking away and getting some smaller rewards. I'm very, very sad, and now mad because people are celebrating the loss of an annual event I (and many others) looked forward to.
by musicallittle1 on May 8, 2025 7:39 AM NST
Agreed, they keep taking things away. It doesn't matter if you participated or hated the AC or not, the site needs more content not less.
by sailormoon on May 8, 2025 7:53 AM NST
Personally, I enjoy the team and community aspect of the AC the most. After so many years of connecting with teammates on neo and off site every June throughout the Cup, we're friends, or maybe family is a better term.

I'm disappointed TNT made this decision.

Yes, there were a lot of issues with the AC - glitches, cheaters, captchas. No, I didn't have any expectation that it would be 'fixed' this year.

Neopets is a nostalgic gaming site and this is the 20th year of running the Altador Cup. That achievement should be celebrated by the site and the players who made that happen first. TNT should have given this moment in history a proper closure before they decided to close the Colosseum.
by msmarie on May 8, 2025 7:56 AM NST
Sad but not surprised. Everything here leads away from what made NeoPets fun for me. This is just the next step. I find myself spending less and less time, because there is less and less to do - unless you can afford to spend piles of money.
by rosamooooo on May 8, 2025 8:02 AM NST
To be honest, thank godness there won't be any games to grind... the grind was horrible, slow and stress-inducing, especially with buggy games. Happy to know they will be working on revamping it, in the meanwhile a scaled down AC sounds totally ok! *thumbs up emoji, I'm too lazy to insert it properly*
by silvia on May 8, 2025 8:18 AM NST
I was never good at AC and so only have participation trophies to my name. But at least this does make sense lore wise, kinda hard to host a global event with all these Voidlings everywhere! XD

Hopefully what TNT is working on will be worth it in 2026!

I've never in my life been able to make myself sit down and play games that I felt were repetitive, not to the extent required to rank up and get the better prizes. I hope it will have more participation in the future, but I'm pretty relieved this isn't going to be another year of looking at the ongoing event and shrugging my shoulders.

by zieloh on May 8, 2025 8:54 AM NST
Oh thank goodness - I've been around since the first AC and it's always been a painfully dull event. I'd love to see some changes that make it less of a grindfest. I can't play and play and play the same 3 minute flash game over and over and over again, it's not good and I don't think it's healthy for anyone.

My laptop that was bought in 2014 is heaving a sigh of relief. Perhaps in a year I will have a proper computer to play the AC with.

Also, they've reduced Gift Box drops from Trudy to ensure they're a "meaningful reward". I mean, to ensure you still have to pay to trade the items you pay for.

by mousequest on May 8, 2025 11:35 AM NST
They should move Altador Cup to winter and make it a special Christmas sports season. AC isn't just about the games - it's about the cultural phenomenon that occurs during it. Everything in Neopia stops and centers around AC for a full month. The boards, the Neopian Times, the Art Gallery, everything. Even people who don't play AC find it hard to escape conversation about it. It's like Christmas or the Olympics, but for our community. To essentially cancel the entire event (which is what I personally see this as), is to take away a major part of what makes Neopets so great. If they moved it and still had it, I would be more understanding. But this is just a sheer dissappointment.
by asheton on May 8, 2025 11:39 AM NST
I came back to Neopets just after the cup wrapped up last year and I've been looking forward to it the whole time. This feels bad. I have no faith that it will even come back next year considering the plot still being on hiatus, the state of the flash games in general, half the pages still using the old (superior) layout, nerfing the quest log, pet specific IP infringement gacha capsules etc.
by gazzletron on May 8, 2025 12:09 PM NST

IMHO, I don't really even care if the Void plot just goes away, I sure do miss when we had REAL plots like the Lost Desert Plot in 2005!
by contessa on May 8, 2025 12:35 PM NST
Seriously guys, you don’t like the cup, don’t play. Stop celebrating the removal of something people really enjoyed. The cup was a lot more than picking a team and grinding out games for us. It was also a time for us to have some engagement with other people and truly bond and have fun with not just our teammates but encourage other teams. I play with Faerieland and am with FLUFF and we always did fun games and prizes on the boards for our group. 1-NP auctions, set goals and strategy on what games to focus on for the team we were playing for the day and gave each gifts and encouragement. We would even go and wish the team we were up against a good game for the day and sometimes exchange gifts with them! It was a great time on the site and this will make that kind of stuff not really happen cause a lot of people won’t be participating in this.

Demolishing community and engagement is NOT something to celebrate.

Want to give this year's mini event a chance. Could be good--you never know. Loved the AC and hit Double or Triple All Star rank every year. To be honest, one month for AC was too long (2+ weeks sounds about right) and maximum games were still too high to avoid the grind. AC should not return until all the glitches are fixed (captchas, shadowbans, bots). We can wait. Maybe allow us to sign up with our teams so we can enjoy going on our boards. Make competition a personal thing (have daily challenges to meet for points and prizes) rather than pitting teams against each other (which is how bots appear and ruin everything).

by neolikepets on May 8, 2025 4:21 PM NST
Well, the prize shop of AC was always one of the biggest barriers to collectors,

that's literally so easy to rebalance. it's just a matter of tweaking numbers
something like the void within shop is a good example of people being able to afford multiple prizes that makes their efforts seem meaningful.
the AC has always been horrible at that. it encouraged a lot of cheating just to keep up or just claim a single top prize

Last year was the first year (in my nearly 20 years of playing Neopets) that I was fully involved with the Altador Cup. While I agree that its a grind, it was my FAVORITE event of 2024. Like they couldn't do something like... 10 games a day to max out? The games are what makes the AC the AC... and I no longer want to spend my entire summer sitting around playing them but like... how many 'click a button to get an item' events do we need?

Good. The Altador Cup has been nothing but a monotonous grind fest for years and I expect the need to run it every. Single. Year. Is part of what keeps them from actually stepping back and reassessing instead of being a slog that slows the whole site down.

I can understand the overall contentment I see with these changes to the event. However, I don't think people are quite understanding the gravity of accepting such a thing without even a bit of resistance. This tells TNT it's okay to, in the future, be more lax with the yearly events they give us and that we will continue to take whatever they give us while continuing to shovel them revenue in the form of the increasingly frustrating amount of in game purchases that are being pushed on us.
I'm upset with them essentially canceling the AC, not because I wanted to play it, but because it feels like they are getting more and more comfortable with mediocrity and pay-to play garbage instead of listening to the feedback of the community.
by nugget on May 9, 2025 10:37 AM NST
TNT are slowly but surely monetising the site. The NC Pet day stuff, reducing gb drop on trudy surprise. This dropping of AC, while adding more pay content is just another expansion of that.

with as many irons in the fire as they have without consideration for their longterm due to their lackluster sprint towards success (that big neopets game they've been working on, the TCG that's getting more development, too many brand/merch deals, a scuffed as hell plot, a patchwork site with questionable quality behind every link not even on the same layout, terrible decisions left and right for months/years, tech debt that's been building year after year since the site was built on toothpicks/elmer's glue/prayers, needing to focus heavily on reworking their moderation and approach to safeguarding marginalized folks) and as big of an effort as AC is year after year with constantly degrading quality on that front, as a programmer, this was probably the only thing they could do to keep their heads afloat this year and years forward. money and resources are obviously spread too thin.

there's no easy fix for AC while they have so much else going on. they seem to want to get the plot going again ASAP despite all these delays, so dividing their workforce between plot and AC was not going to succeed. having a gap year to potentially make things better next year is a reasonable idea, even if it's a sad one.
by vysea_rhone on May 9, 2025 3:18 PM NST
This isn't scaling back, it's changing the cup to a button-click daily. A true scaling back would be making the amount of games played to reach different ranks much less than they were. And going for maybe 2 weeks instead of the full time. Like, I don't ind scaling back if it was truly that, but this... doesn't give me much hope for the future. They can just as easily next year go 'well we have a lot on our plate still and you guys were okay with this, so we're doing it like last year.' We already lost GMC and such, I don't like that we're effectively losing the cup too.
by goldennightfox on May 9, 2025 9:17 PM NST
Wow.. people celebrating the loss (yes, it probably won't be back) of a longstanding and OPTIONAL event just because they didn't personally enjoy it even though tons and tons of other people did is terrible.

I can't imagine celebrating the loss of the battledome or something just because I don't personally enjoy battling. 🤦🏻‍♀️
by scootypuffjr on May 10, 2025 12:55 AM NST
So we actually already knew in advance that they were debating what to do about it as of last year, and as of an AMA they did announce they were thinking about not doing AC at all since, as anyone can see from the comments, it's Contentious. Many people really enjoy it, and many people really don't. I'm glad it's not completely gone and we're getting anything at all, and I do believe if they say in advance that they want to work on it in the future, they'll do it. They've been doing a lot around the site and are spreading themselves too thin, of course they don't have time to solve the rework of the AC right now, while they're reworking the plot that's already overdue, working on mobile apps that will probably fail, putting money into developing the TCG, and slowly fixing the busted site while dealing with internal staff changes and rule revisions. They're unfocused, and that's bad, but there's no reason to believe "um yeah you guys are dumb for thinking they'll EVER bring it back." Like. What precedent is there for this? They have done the things they actually say they will, albeit late and under strain.
by mercy_graves on May 10, 2025 10:16 AM NST

Lmao this is stupid. I look forward to the AC every year, this sucks. I was happy when that lame plot stopped; not a single part of it was good, and it's PAINFULLY long, holy crap. But to get rid of the AC (I'm calling it now, they ARE getting rid of it) to replace it with the same point, click, here's a prize BS that's been plaguing Neo for the past idk, what has it been, nearly 10 years? It's lazy and unimaginative. TNT has gotten rid of ALL their gaming events! What's even left to do on Neo anymore?

Honestly happy to hear this, the grind for AC has been such a DRAAAG!!!

"and with the plot just around the corner" Is it though? Why continue to use the plot as an excuse to not do things? just be upfront about it!

I'd rather play AC than the "plot"

I imagine the decision is lag related. Almost impossible to play anything on the site, even just dailies. Can you imagine the frustration of trying to play altador Cup?
