Varwolf Now Live!

The 56th species of Neopet—Varwolf—is now officially live! All Premium subscribers can make use of the Species Change perk to convert one of their existing Neopets into a Varwolf. If you're a Premium member and you used your Species Change perk in the last year, the countdown has been refreshed and it's now available again for you to use immediately. (But be warned, this will count as your use for the next 365 days.)

The Varwolf is available in these basic colours: Blue, Green, Red, and Yellow. (NOTE: You are able to take your Varwolf for a dip in the Magma Pool, but then your pet will turn into a cog as Magma has not been made available for Varwolves yet!)

As a reminder, TNT posted these release details about the Varwolf last week:

Varwolves are from the Haunted Woods
Initially available via the Premium Species Change perk, but "Varwolves will be made available site-wide through a mini (non-time-limited!) event and questline in summer 2025"
If you're a Premium subscriber who already used their species change perk in the past year, it will be refreshed for you so you can immediately choose it to make a Varwolf when they release
Not available through the Lab Ray
Cannot be transferred or abandoned in the Pound (they will run away like Lutaris)
If you cancel Premium, you can keep your Varwolf even before they become widely available
Varwolves can be customised with all existing backgrounds, foregrounds, trinkets, etc., and TNT says they will "work on making existing wearables compatible with the Varwolf" meaning clothes that must be redrawn to fit a new body shape

As this new species rolls out, we'll be making lots of updates around Jellyneo! If you notice one of our pages is out of date, feel free to scroll to the bottom and let us know so we can make sure it's on our to-do list.

Fun Fact: As the species info on the default petpage points out, Varwolves enjoy eating everything, including Gross Food! If you feed your Varwolf a Gross Food, it won't be repulsed like other species.

Is it me or they changed the way to select the color also when selecting other species becasue now it doesnt allow me to do it and last year i swear i was also able to select the brush (trying other species than Varwolf)

To pick the color of the pet the current pet has to be a color the pet you want to transform into can't be. For example, My Lupe is currently painted 25th anniversary. If I swap to a species that doesn't have a 25th anniversary color as an option I am then given the option to also pick the new color for the pet I'm transforming into.

@kacheekfan96: We don't know that yet--it *could* be today (there will surely be Varwolf celebrations in New Features), but we don't know if this will be the annual day. When Vandagyres were released, they were assigned a different annual Pet Day (so it didn't conflict with Neopets' birthday).

Them going the extra mile to make an animated pet introduction is actually really cool

Kinda lame they run away like lutari, but maybe it'll be removed in the future? I like basic colored pets so I plan on getting one

I feel like they could have quite easily done a lot more basic colors that don't change any poses or add bits (brown, split, orange, pink, purple, shadow, etc).
Those basic ones would take maybe 5 minutes tops.

Changed my Blue Lupe to a Red Varwolf and also painted his petpet Faellie to Halloween since the petpet Halloween brush is somehow cheaper than red! And I believe I have plenty of slots, so I don't care that I used my Species Change, as I'll probably never again in life, let alone within the next year, use it.

It seems like they won't get any color options until they're released fully—the info page says "Since Varwolves are quite reclusive, there haven't been many sightings of them in any unusual colours...". Hopefully they'll do all the "recolor" options immediately once they do given that they take five minutes to make.

Pretty sure the initial release was with the event and thus any clothes for their bodies are planned to be available by that time. Hopefully that day we also get confirmation of more non-premium pet slots.

I had a Blue Koi from Lab Ray, glad to use the Species Change perk to change it to the new species. I also wish there were more colour choices and that there were more clothing choices than the birthday suit. I know, wait for the main release and there will be more choices. Wake me up when it's available in a Burlap option, please.

I love the way the angry version gets cat-slit eyes. Also in general I like the design and will probably create one when they become available site-wide.

On the other hand them only releasing the basic colors feels like a missed opportunity. Like they should have done something similar to what they did with the Bori and released at least one zap exclusive color that Premium members could have used their perk on. Then again if I had premium I’d probably hold off on creating one to see if they release more colors within the next few months.

I did just notice something on the full sized Varwolf that I wish I hadn't.
On all but the happy pose the two eyes are the same, but with the happy eyes the eye in the foreground (pet's right) is moved toward the outer/upper corner, while the eye in the background (pet's left) is moved toward the inner/lower corner! Maybe it would have looked worse the other way, but it does look cockeyed while the other emotions don't

I think I'd only be interested if they come out with alternate art in a pet style because if it can't wear any of the old customizable items then what's the point. For me at least lol.

No, as of right now it sounds like existing wearables don’t work with them. TNT is saying eventually they’ll be updated to work with the Varwolf, but for now it’s backgrounds and trinkets only.

Silly me. Since all the preview pics I saw just showed red, somehow I thought they were only available in red. When I realized they were also in three other basic colors, I chose a different pet to change than I had originally planned. (And chose yellow) I see the V that roshchodeshm mentioned. They are pretty cute so we will see how I feel after playing with my new pet after a few months.

I like it... but there's something about it...
While I think they were going for vampire/werewolf with the Varwolf, all I see are the franken-parts that look like they were traced from other pets. It's got Korbat ears, a Cybunny Ruff, Lupe body, Bori Toes, Eyrie Tail, Ixi head shape, Tuskaninny teeth, and a Kougra nose...
Add some slight foxing at the edges and voila you have a Varwolf...

@ pheonixdark - I’m not getting any of that. If anything it’s got a Kougra body and feet minus the stripes, but with a lionlike tail and ruff similar to the eyrie. The head is where it looks wholely original, it doesn’t really look like any other species of Neopet, although yeah the ears look a bit like a korbat’s if you squint.

Its a really odd choice to release it without ANY colors that aren’t the defaults. I feel like atleast “basic” colors like pink or orange would’ve been easy, and magma + baby + mutant just because every other species has those all right now. Idk its just odd.

@christian nah marapets have a certain style to them just like neopets do. the varwolf just looks like it was drawn the way the marapets are with similar eyes and small frame. The varwolf looks better suited among marapets than it does with the cast of neopets. If anything, it looks like a petpet, not a real pet.

@bob_smith, I mean kinda I guess? But Marapets again only started because of Neopets, so there's bound to be similarities and you could easily make that argument for pets that have been here longer. I find the Varwolf to be very Neopet-esque. Not to mention, the Varwolf was created in 2005, so it's not like it randomly came out now looking like a Marapet, it's been a design for a while.

It's interesting that despite Neopets cut-off the translation of Japanese and Chinese for over a decade, the Varwolf still has translated name "ヴァーウォーフ"for Japanese and "瓦夫狼" for Chinese.

@blackcatbrandyce The cog is basically the Neopets equivalent of a broken JPEG. Means that while the Magma Pool will allow you to toss your Varwolf in, there isn't a Magma color for it. So it will be a broken image until TNT designs a Magma color, or until you repaint it yourself.

I really wish they had taken a few extra minutes to include basic colours like shadow, white, brown, pink etc. Still nice to finally have the varwolf though. Hopefully they will release the Sharkaw next.

I was about to make one but then I didn't want to waste a nicely painted paint and turn it into a basic colour... because then its a waste when the new colours release because then i could have picked one of those... doesn't seem worth it to get it early?? what happened to the vandagyre re colours?

I was super excited about the Varwolves, had a pet in mind and everything because I loved what his previous owner had done with a paint brush before sending him to the pound...only to find it was just the basic colors being released. So I ended up waiting on the Varwolf and used the reset species change on another one I wanted instead. I'll wait for more colors and patterns to be released, and hopefully that happens somewhat soon. I'd rather wait to use the species change next year and have a perfect brush ready than have the pet slot taken now.
