Varwolf Revealed

TNT has begun posting across social media revealing the 56th species of Neopet: the Varwolf!

You may recall the new species was spoiled earlier this month after TNT's testing caused the pet name to show up in the Styling Studio. Then, it was confirmed a week later in the news with a small snippet shown off.

Now, we have the grand reveal:

As mentioned by TNT earlier in the news, this new species will be exclusive to Premium members out of the gate via the Species Change perk. But later on, this Haunted Woods-based pet will become available to all Neopians in a special event.

Meet the reclusive Varwolf. 🐺

These reclusive new Neopets might have taken their time to venture out of their safe burrows and homes, but we're excited to announce that they'll be starting to look for their new homes soon!

In the meantime, Neopians will be able to coax one out later this month by using the Premium Subscription’s Pet Species Change perk, so why not check out what other features you’ll also get for subscribing?

If you’re willing to wait though, the Varwolf will be released site-wide at a later date during a special event.

I have a couple pets that I adopted lately because of name or age. Maybe I will change one to Varwolf. And live with one a bit. Not sure I want one permanently. Cute but not (for me anyway) "got to have it cute!!"

First of all I'm so beyond thrilled for the Varwolf! I love them so much! Kid me would have cried in a very happy but dramatic preteen fashion. That being said I will DEFINITELY adopting one or two or five when they're out! Will probably use my PP on it as well since I've already got all my dream pets. (:

I hope potions will be readily available in a timely fashion, I have some pets that would do nicely as Varwolf (Varwolves?) If not though I hope to find an actual NAME that works well for them, since the Purge doesn't seem to be happening any time soon.

Looking forward to seeing what colors it has off the bat, and also wondering if they'll have styles available right away too.

I've got 116 days before I can do a species change, so I'll have to wait unless they refresh the timers for premium users (which I doubt they'll do). Either way, I think it'll be nice and kind of commemorative to create one whenever we're officially able to make them.

If the varwolf matches another pet like said above possibly the eyrie, they may not need to redraw the wearables and they may still be able to make them work. I think the vandagyre was quite different with it's body shape.
It's ok, I'm gonna wait and see different colours and varwolf exclusive outfits before I make one and more pet slots is absolutely necessary sometime soon tho I am still in the process of buying the ones available for my account. I have a lot of pets and dream pets. I wish there was no limit.

Looks to me like a Lupe + Kougra mix, with Tuskanniny tusks, Vandagyre eyes and Gnorbu neckfur. Nothing comes to mind regarding the ears and the tail... (well, the tail reminds me of Pumba from Lion King xD)

See, my thing is that I think its Very cute. Whar makes me disappointed tho is I saw the OG artist for Varwolves do a redesign for “how theyd design it now” and I personally like it alot more because to Me That design gives the same feelings as the design tweaks the Gnorbu got, whereas this one is just 1:1 with its original design

Absolutely getting a basic blue or green one (depending on shading) once they're released site-wide. I want one on hand for a side of mine. A cute little vampire wolfpuppy is an absolute MUST for roleplay shenanigans. And once they start releasing non-basic colors, then I'll decide on a combo. Blue or green for now will do.

I was initially a bit skeptical about this pet, but it's actually really cute. Not my kind of thing - I'm not much into four-legged pets - but I'm happy for everyone who gets to have their Varwolf dream realized!

I'll be interested to see it in different paintbrush colors. There is a lot of potential for creative adaptations.

I don't have premium, so I have who knows how long to decide, quite a while I'm sure, but my general inclination is that I might get one. It's cute, and since I have both a baby and a mutant pet already, I'm pretty used to doing without wearables.

Honestly, I don't really get the people who don't want a new species just because the old wearables won't be retrofitted to it. If you don't want it, just don't get it? How is it better for it not to exist at all, if you don't get one isn't it functionally the same to you either way? The only difference is the people who *do* want it will have the choice to get one.

Happy they are looking to add more pets now but they have openly said any new pets will not get any old wearables. Personally do not see a point in getting it as they still have not even updated older wearables for older pets and are overly focused on Pay-walling everything.

@cat it would be awesome if they were available through the lab ray, but since you already can't get draiks, krawks, ixis, and tonus through the lab ray (as well as like 8 different colors), I suspect they'll add the varwolf to that list too, at least until its main release.

Ehh I don't see the appeal personally. I think it just looks like a Bori stood up with a Cybunny ruff and a vampire fangs slapped on. If they went full on chimera with it it would be more interesting but as it stands, it looks so vague.

yeah besides bemoaning the lack of pet slots i just dont like this pet design??? its a tyrannian kougra with a cybunny ruff?? i know furry, quadrupedal, cat/dog pets do well on the site, and i know a lot of people are excited for this one too, but i would have liked to see a more original concept (said with peace and love and a grain of salt, because im glad that at least someone is working on the site at all these days oops)

If this is the official customization pose art... It's cute but does not look like it would work well wearing clothes. I suppose that might be consolation for people worried about retrofitting stuff if it looks good without, but I can't see most dresses, for example, not looking oddly stretched/disproportionate on this body type. Unless the artists figure out a unique way to make it work, I doubt this pet is intended to be focused on dressing up. Which again, may be a good thing if it can't wear old clothes anyways.

The special event they mentioned will probably not be for the site’s anniversary, since that’s already Vandagyre day. If I were them I’d pick a month that has fewer pet days to drop this into, and have the official release then.

I love the Varwolf but it feels totally unfair to be "punished" for already using my species change when very few people if any could have predicted a new species out of the blue.

I *bought* my premium for a species change for a dreamie I'd wanted for a while, so im feeling extra sore about it. What are your guy's thoughts on this? Personally i'd like to see TNT give us a free change reset for the varwolf release, maybe one that can only be used to get a varwolf?? I dont pretend to know how hard that'd be to code in considering all the legacy code built like a stack of cards, haha

It sounds like it would be fairest for Premium players to all get a single no trade morphing item that would turn the pet it was given to into a random basic colored varwolf. At the same time though it sounds like y’all just want to double dip. Yeah you didn’t know the varwolf would be released as a premium pet change perk, that could just as easily have been you regretting using it to get a dream pet because TNT releases a better color later that year.

Instead of a free reset for the perk, you should just be able to use it for a Varwolf and nothing else. Unless they are going to use this as an opportunity to say: You can now use the perk twice a year! type deal or change it in someway. Other than that, personally don't care about the pet and won't be getting it myself. Don't have Premium anyway.

Honestly that's how it comes off to me, like if they already used it, then they aren't being cheated out of anything, they got exactly what they asked for when they wanted it. If anything, it seems to me like it would be unfair to the people who didn't use their species change if they all got reset for this since it means the people who already used theirs would effectively get 2 species changes instead of 1.

Maybe this is a bit harsh, but I feel like the people who already used theirs will survive just fine even if they have to wait for the varwolf's normal release with us non-premium plebs.

As much as getting a species change perk reset would be an incentive to get premium would make business sense I think just waiting for the species public release would be fine. What if, after getting premium to get a Varwolf and spending your once in a year species change the public release comes with a morphing potion available through the daily quest log prizes? What if it's got an open adoption day where people can make as many varwolves as they like? What if you can get a morphing potion from the void prize shop? You're paying for the privilege of getting this pet early, there will be other ways to get them in the future.

I'm here to "complain and whine" whether anyone wants it or not. Still don't get why everyone's throwing themselves at TNT for this thing. It's so bland and boring.
And I'm not saying that just because it's new. Like others already pointed out, it's literally just a Bori with a Cybunny's ruff and a Lupe/Kougra's build. 3-4 already good pets haphazardly mashed together to make something incredibly mid.
Also, y'all should be working on TVW imo, not shoving more Premium content down everyone's throat. That's why the plot got delayed again in the first place.

They need more then the 4 basic colors at its launch, and a LOT of NP/NC clothing compatable with it.. which they won't do.

If I can’t dress it up, then what’s the point.

Also, odd time to introduce a new pet when we got the whole Styles thing going on too. Guess we’ll have to wait longer for those too.

It's been over a decade since we last got a new species, I think this is very cool and exciting whether I like the design or not, whether it's similar to previous pets or not, whether it'll have good wearables or not, and no matter how long it'll be exclusive to premium. It's still very exciting to me! I love that Neopets is still coming out with cool new things like this, this many years into its existence, it makes me hopeful for the future of the site

I'm not enamored of the way neopets announced getting the Varwolf. It's their slipshod attempt to 'sound' like they are providing full information (they are) without sounding like you 'have to' have premium to get it (you don't) - but it sounds that way by what they leave out.

"...we're excited to announce that they'll be starting to look for their new homes soon!
In the meantime, Neopians will be able to coax one out later this month by using the Premium Subscription’s Pet Species Change perk, so why not check out what other features you’ll also get for subscribing?
If you’re willing to wait though, the Varwolf will be released site-wide at a later date..."

But what it DOESN'T say you won't need to have premium, that everyone can get it.

It feels.... samey? Like I feel like I've seen this pet a million times over the years. Pretty unimaginative. I won't be getting one. It's clearly just a way for TNT to try and juice up "Premium perks"

@roshchodesh: TNT is not known for their clear communication, but they have an FAQ on the Varwolf and say this:
When will I be able to get a Varwolf without Premium?
March 18, 2025
Varwolves will be made available site-wide through a mini (non-time-limited!) event and questline in summer 2025.

I only do moehogs so I will never use this for me as I will never use my yearly change. Can I do this for someone else? Can I change someone else's pet or one I get from the pound and give it away?

As somebody who customizes what I assumed was true, is. We're still waiting for hundreds of old items to work with customization and even new items coming out are not zoned or work properly. I don't have any faith there is going to be any items to use on this new pet. Not interested in making one if that's the case.

I would rather they put that time and effort into TVW instead of unveiling a new species that looks like a kougra/lupe/eyrie/bori hybrid. Why are they putting resources into a new species when they have a site which is only half-converted to the new layout and a plot that is "on hold" for some indeterminate amount of time?? Also, I see new merch updates on a nearly biweekly basis, so again it seems like the resources are being spent on cash-grabby schemes while the player base is waiting to finally get the updates and site continuity that we have been promised for years...

Also, MOARRRR PET SLOTSSSSSSS!!!!

Reminder that this design existed as an April Fool's from 2005 when TNT announced 50 new pets and that current TNT did not come up with this design.
