A week ago Jellyneo shared news of a possible new Neopet, likely called a 'Varwolf'.

Today, TNT confirmed that it was more than just a test:

Some strange rumours have been flying around Neopia lately, and our intrepid team of Meepits has been carefully investigating them. After much searching, they have reported back and we can confirm: the rumours are true and there is, in fact, a new Neopet coming soon!

More details to be announced, but the plan is for our newest Neopet to be made available through the Premium Pet Species Change first, with a wider release to come later during a site-wide event.

The image in New Features links to the Premium membership page, which has been updated to list out all current perks. Users can find a more in-depth guide to perks and other information in Jellyneo's recently revamped Premium Guide.

It seems the early release of the pet is intended to be a Premium perk, though one requiring users use up their once-per-year species change.

Jellyneo will share additional details of colors, pet styles, and other information as it comes to light. It is not yet clear whether any wearables will be retrofitted for the new species, but based on the Vandagyre it seems unlikely.

I mean if they go varwolf like it looks the body is similar enough to lupe they could probably stretch most of the existing clothes…

Oh yes, this is what we want. A pet with a massive amount of clothing it can never wear, getting paltry amounts of clothing drip fed to us though pet birthdays and capsules, most likely few paint options, it's premium only (for now), and you have to use a species change which is a once a year thing. The Vandagyre is what, 11 years old, and it still sits at one of the lowest owned pets. It's cute but because of all the limitations to variety and dress up, it's just not worth it to have. This new pet is even worse considering it's premium only (again for now).

I think it’s a cool idea but with hundreds maybe thousands of wearables still not working with customization I’m confused what this pet will wear…I basically only customize on the site so that is of course my main concern lol

I think it's great that they are introducing a new species. However I have no interest in the look of it unless they introduce some cute/interesting unique colors soon after release (baby, mara, mutant).

You do understand the site needs to make money in order to run. The fact that we are getting it after 20 years is HUGE!

For those who don't remember how the bori was first introduced let alone the ice bori. As a Premium I think it's fair because we are giving them our money to help run the site.

I get a lot of the concerns people already (and rightfully) have. It is frustrating to have it be a premium-first thing, but as long as it doesn't stay premium-only, I don't really see it as a huge problem. Premium members and those who buy NC items are helping to fund the site, it makes sense for there to be incentives to spend money and get more users to join premium. Yes, it's annoying, but it makes sense. I say that as someone who caved and got premium during the advent calendar.

As for the limited customization, well, to be blunt, a lot of the items on site already don't work or don't apply properly. As long as this new pet can at least wear a good selection of backgrounds, background items, and foreground items, I'll be happy. I understand though that customization is a huge part of the game, and being unable to use favorite items will be disappointing.

Whether it's the varwolf or not, I'm excited to see a new species.

I don't care that it is Premium, but it is just another four legged pet. I liked Xayxay then Skamp. Even Smapaderk is better.

While I'm excited to see a new species I'm not going to be burning a premium species change on it when it's probably going to be released to the public a few months later. I can wait until then, here's hoping for some decent colors though there's no hope for wearables. Maybe they'll do a NC species specific mystery capsule or something but that'll be it for a long while.

I like the Varwolf all around and am excited for its release, but I don't like the premium aspect. At least it's only temporarily instead of being premium exclusive, but it rubs me the wrong way. I think it would've been far better to give premium users a free Varwolf pet style of their choice—which would've been a better perk anyway, as a pre-release is negated by the later release for all users, whereas a free pet style would save actual money.

Also, as others have pointed out, this feels super unfair to any premium users who already used their annual species change.

i feel it should've just stayed strictly as a premium perk...

ppl could still just trade/gift varwolfs after all (as i'm going to assume they won't be locked like how lutaris were and plenty of ppl gift their perks anyway)... but i guess they were too afraid of the possible backlash, lol...

and another hot-take:

i kinda hope it'll take some work to get a varwolf. not necessarily expensive (because thx bots) but not necessarily just handed to us with an mp or put into the create-a-pet... as i do miss LE pets being... well, limited? everything on neo outside of stamps, rare item code items or battledome weps feels too easily accessible if you're a regular player... i miss how excited ppl were when finding a draik egg or getting a krawk or pirate pre-shore, etc..

anway... yeauh.. i feel ppls eyes searing into me as i type already~

Okay, but.. I just want to see more pet slots, because I’m full.

While I’m aware of limitations that will happen, similar to the Vandagyre.. Which is sad, but I get it. I would still love to get the new Neopet! However, they have mentioned later adding more slots for users to get more Neopets. Yes, I’m aware that 20 pets is a lot, but I still want more virtual neopets.

Just it’s been over a year or two since I remember it being mentioned and no change. I get you can have multiple accts, but not everyone wants multiple ones, just to have more pets. (I certainly don’t, since I’d like to keep them all on one acct, so I can see them and dress up whenever I want.

I like the idea of a new pet, but agree that this is hard to watch since Vandys still can't wear more than half of the items available. It being a premium perk first I really don't mind - We have literally no room for more pets lol .. With all the new paint, clothes, and tokens that have come out having what is the current max now doesnt feel like we have enough and even if you have a side account ( Which I really dont want to jump back and forth from ) We would have to spend hundreds just to send boxes and nc items to.

I don't want to have to constantly swap the colours of my pets since the price of paint brushes can definitely add up!!

I'm not a customizer, so I don't care about the wearables, and there should still be thousands of items - backgrounds, foregrounds, etc. - that will work like the do with pet styles.

We haven't seen the 'final' design yet (just a 20-year-old inspiration) but I think it looks cute and plenty different from the pets we have.

I think the species change pre-release is a bit of an awkward choice, but as long as it's not exclusive I'm not bothered by it.

I also personally think it'd be fun to have more pets that are more like the Krawk and Draik hard-to-get, as inkpot said. I like goals being attainable - unlike 200-million-NP-stamps - but there's something a little lackluster when so many goals other albums and books become so easy. I can see why people have wanted goal counters lately for their own sillier little collections and ideas, and it would be nice to see TNT find a balance of things being achievable but not all over the place.

As someone who'll probably have double digits in their bank after bills, I honestly don't even care if Varwolf gets premium locked. I don't care if it never has a single customization wearable. I don't care if it's even account locked. JUST GIVE ME MY DIREWOLF. Lupes and Gelert and Kacheek are fine and all, but we need more canine options.

I like the points made about having a hard-to-get species, the way Draiks and Krawks used to be.
Personally I'm not a fan of the Varwolf (yes I know we haven't seen the new version yet - but I'm not a Halloween/werewolf fan in general anyway). I have a PP coming in a few months, but will not be getting it, if it's even still premium exclusive by that point anyway.

Pretty sure TNT will make some modifications to the final design, just like how the Lamameh was transfomed in the Gnorbu (put them side by side and there are LOTS of differences) but unlike the Gnorbu, I feel like the Varwolf can actually get some nice glow ups (sorry, the Gnorbu is ugly compared to what it looked like in the voting poll).

NOW TNT, ALLOW US TO GET MORE PET SLOTS, WITH NEW PET STYLES, COLORS AND NOW A NEW SPECIES IS JUS IMPOSSIBLE AT THIS POINT.

I also hope this was a side background proyect that was done at the same time as the plot, i.e. the Varwolf has tons of items to wear, mainly the items released while and a bit prior of the plot's release.

I'm personally not a huge fan about the whole "premium first" thing, but like I get it. TNT has been focusing on premium lately and this is certainly a way to advertise it. As long as it's released to all in like a month of its introduction, I'll be happy. Especially if there are morphing potions and / or magic plushies that get released alongside them. (Yes, I recognize that those would be an arm and a leg in the meantime.)

Other than that, I'm quite excited! I don't know what the Varwolf is going to look like but I feel like regardless, people are going to be happy! It's definitely not going to be an all time favorite of mine, but I'd like one. And I know people who are so excited about this, and as long as some people are happy, then it's great. I'm personally hoping it'll be released with a few more colors than the starting four. They don't have to be fancy, just like basic ones like white, shadow, pink, purple, orange, etc. Something to at least add a little bit of flavor while they're forced to stay naked.

TLDR, I'm quite happy about this revelation and I'm waiting in excitement.

Also as an aside, this is how you know these guys are real Neopets fans. Only a real Neopets fan remembers the Varwolf and the other April Fools pets from 2005.

I'm alright with it being an early release for premium, though I hope they give a separate, 1-time-use change so people who used their PP don't miss out, and people who haven't used it yet don't have to waste it in the hype. Allow people to create a new pet or change one of their current ones, like how they did with Bori back when they were released (for people who weren't playing then, in 2004 if you downloaded the neopets toolbar you got early access to Boris)

I may be sick of them shoving premium down our throats, but this is a nice perk, as long as the early access doesn't become only-access. (and like others have mentioned, it'd be nice if these were more of a challenge to get. not ridiculous, but not handed to us either. I miss having goals.)

Very excited for this as my PP resets in 10 or so days and I didn't know what to use it for!

But I would reaaaaally like some more pet slots 🫠 hope we get a nice bunch of colours upon release too, at least the ones for paintbrushes easily obtained like the hidden tower ones, pirate and grey (since its in the plot shop)

I am actually okay with this being a premium pet for the time being, getting a proper release sometime later. It's a nice premium perk to be able to get early access to something and it's not uncommon for games to do something like this. Just as long as they don't wait too long to release the pet to the rest of the player-base of course.

I do agree with sentiment shared in this comment section though: A new pet will have very limited customisation options. Of course you can't expect TNT to convert the thousands of wearables for this new pet (though it would be nice if they at least attempted to do so every now and again. Just have a low news day once every two weeks where you reveal two old items of clothing now to be worn by the Vandagyre and Varwolfs) so it will likely take a while for this pet to actually become popular.
Not to mention, this will be MORE work for TNT in the long run, having to keep up with MORE pet days, MORE lore surrounding those pets and MORE new characters that are specifically this new pet. More work that now must be put in a new pet instead of making sure the site works, everyone is enjoying it and that it doesn't look like Frankenstein's monster, patched together from old and new style pages.

For people complaining about customization, it is beyond likely the READON it has taken so long to make a new species.

Look at Flight Rising. They let you clothe your dragons and basically had to stop producing 'normal' species because the work involved with retrofitting all thr clothing items made it increasingly impossible to make sure new species were backwards compatible.

The longer time goes on, the more impossible it becomes. Do you ever want a new species, EVER? You have to live with not being able to give them old hats. I'm sorry. You have endless items that don't need to be 'fitted' already. You can still have fun. But it's a ridiculous demand to ask the team spend months or even years just making sure old pants fit on a quadruped.

Initial thought- LOVE THAT WE'RE GETTING A NEW SPECIES!! It's been long enough!

Follow up thoughts:

- I truly wish it wasn't another dog-like pet. We have two already, why another? Give me some more creative options.
- I knew the Premium hitch would bother a lot of people- but Premium users are funding the site. Take a deep breath and get over it if this bothers you.
- I agree mostly with Inkpot. I miss how difficult (but not unattainable) it was to get the Draik eggs, and I want a challenge like that again.
- We need more pet slots. Come on, TNT. Like others have said, I don't want to have to use side accounts to store my pets, I much prefer them all in one space.
- I likely still wont get this pet. Hot take, but it's not cute based off the old images. I loved the little mousey-boy Euvet. Gimme it.
- Overall so excited for this! This is big news, and I'm so excited to see it roll out.

It would be so much cooler and rewarding if the new species were revealed as a prize by the end of the plot or some other event and became one of the rare species afterwards. The fact they're prioritizing whoever pays money to get it first kinda ruins the fun of it :/

Tbh, I'm more worried about the new "pay to win" avatar % stamp they seem to be releasing with their very expensive and region-locked monopoly game. Hoping it won't count towards avatar score and that the stamp will get released again on site via quest log, but not holding my breath about it. 🤡 Just lock the entire game behind a paywall at this point, jeez.

Not into four-legged pets, and I wasn't a fan of the original art, but I'll keep open to the possibility they'll surprise me with an excellent execution of it. Either way, I'm happy for those who are excited about it. I agree with others who have said that it's going to have to be an amazing pet to make it worthwhile for people like me who are into customization. Vandagyre is second only to Kacheek for my favorite species. I have two Vandagyres, and even after over a decade of customization items I still struggle to get the exact look I want because there aren't enough clothing options. Although Dyeworks has been a lifesaver in this respect.

Also - please, please - we really do need more pet slots. It's becoming more and more difficult to have all the pets we want on one account. I know some people are very active on multiple accounts, but I only use my sides for pet storage.

For whether I’ll create one: I do have space on my sides, so I could, but it will depend what the final design looks like. Personally I preferred the Sharkaw so not really excited for it.
