UPDATE: At some point this morning, the Varwolf was removed from the Styling Studio, and the "unknown species" no longer appears at the Rainbow Pool.


Over in the NC Mall Styling Studio, a peculiar thing has appeared: a placeholder among the list of Neopet species with the name, Varwolf.


Some of you may remember the April Fools' Day joke from 2005, in which 50 new species of Neopets were "unveiled" as a joke. One of them ended up becoming a real Neopet, the Gnorbu. And others ended up as species of petpets.

One of them ended up as neither, and is named Varwolf:


A new unknown species has also appeared in the dropdowns of the Rainbow Pool. We've seen similar things pop up when TNT introduces a new colour, like Potato Chias, until the site gets updated with the new features that day.


No additional information is known at this time. What do you think? Are we just getting new nostalgic Pet Styles for those old April Fools pets? Or are we getting the first new species of Neopet in over 11 years? Discuss in the comments!

I hope it's new nostalgic Pet Styles.

I am OCD and am fiercely anti-new-Neopet unless we know that what happened with the Vandagyres* WON'T happen again.

*They can't wear clothing that was made before they existed.

The only exception I'd feel comfortable making would be if TNT made THIS fan-design canon:

If almost all of the colours are already finished AT RELEASE, then the holidays of said pet could be spent retrofitting the existing wearables!

(Don't get me wrong, the Varwolf is lovely! ...I just hyper-fixate on colours being completed and this would bother me greatly. That's just me thought. I'm sorry. )

The idea of a new species is nice but without foreknowledge that they will have any problematics worked out unlike the fact with the Vandys and they super limited to what clothing they can wear. I feel like that would drive a wedge in the enjoyment of Neopians and that pet until it would be fixed properly and appropriate clothing made universal amongst all pets rather species specific. Sometimes its hard to customize a pet because they have a limited set of clothing they can wear that isn't universal outside of the NC options.

As someone who doesn't care about about dressing up Neopets I'd be more than happy to have new pets that aren't compatible with all the clothing. Heck, they could just make 'nostalgic' pets who operate like pets did before clothing was introduced.

@jediboy1 - I'm sorry, but could you please not say you're OCD about something like this? Generally speaking, people with OCD really dislike it when non-OCD people use the term to describe just when someone wants something in particular way. OCD isn't about being particular and it causes great distress to those who have it.

I personally am pretty excited about the opportunity of a new species! Regardless of what's going on, it's clear TNT is cooking something up big. With how pet styles are now, they're species locked. So unless some serious coding edits goes into this, I doubt the Varwolf will just be pet styles.

Not a super huge fan of the Varwolf as is, but a new species is always exciting.
Certain colors like Faerie, Baby and Maraquan could still be interesting!

Gosh I remember seeing that Centibyte on /~Synthaphone forever ago and thought it was super cool! Especially Halloween, Mutant, Pirate and Woodland. Maybe one day... T_T

@minerra - I do understand how you feel when someone throws that terminology around casually... because I AM diagnosed with OCD, so I get it.

I wouldn't use that expression if I didn't have it.

My mom fought for the ADA law (Americans with Disabilities Act) to be passed in the '80s. I don't take terminology lightly.

@1jediboy Whoa that Centibye design is amazing! I can't believe all how real all the art looks. The artist has really honed the neopets style well. I imagine creating clothes for a pet with multiple arms might be a bit of a nightmare, but they are such a cutie. I am also now a Centibyte fan. (Although I'm not really sold on the name.)

Putting my money on it being an NC Token-only species, but wherever TNT puts pet species it into the code, it causes the species to appear everywhere on the site, thus why it appears in Create-A-Pet and (seemingly) at the Rainbow Fountain. And I'll be munching my popcorn as Neopia goes up in flames once again lol.

More seriously, I'd rather they focus on retroactively making all wearables usable on Vandagyres before ever introducing a new (full customisable) species, especially when it's just yet another Generic Fantasy Cat-Dog-Thing. I get it, marketability and all, but eh, I'd rather see more insects or fish or something.

But hey at least they didn't Krawkify the Faellie, I'm sick to the back teeth with those things lol.

@apophis324 omg I didn't even think about that, I'd absolutely hate it if they started introducing entire premium-exclusive species.

I'm excited about getting a new species as long as it's not something ridiculous like that. I already have a mutant and a baby pet, and the pickings are pretty slim for non-NC items available for those, so I'm used to making do with limited options, and not having too many compatible clothing items wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me.

Honestly I have no desire to see a completely new Neopt design release. I'd rather see the scrapped ones justice, and we could probably reintroduce the Tatsu if we wanted. I for one am a big Lamort and Furzurt fan.

I could see this being a mistake, in the sense that TNT might've been using the already made Varwolf assets as a backend test and then accidentally made them go live. If it IS going to be released for real though, it better be a regular pet and not just an NC asset. Neopet species that you have to pay to get is a major no-go.

If there is going to really be a new neopet, iirc in a previous AMA they said it won’t be able to wear old clothes. That’s thousands of items they would have to redraw and code for it.

Lately while looking at the pets styles, I thought that it was due time for TNT to add new Neopets species to refresh the site a little more. So hopefully this turns out to be true and they consider including new ones year by year! This is great news to me and to the neo-community!

The Varwolf wasn't my first choice but it's still a darling (as long as they don't mess it up like what happened with the Llamameea/Gnorbu...). Personally don't care about clothing compatability-- having the redraw so many items to be compatible with a new species is probably WHY we haven't seen anything new in so long.

the varwolf was always a fan favorite so finally adding it to the site as a species proper would be a great move! hopefully with minimal to no changes to the original design (i'm still not over the llamameeah to gnorbu design butchering)

curious to see what a converted version might look like, though? i mean i exclusively use pet styles nowadays but still!

so ig fingers crossed that this is gonna be a real thing and isn't some backend shenanigans giving us false hope TT_TT

A new species is okay in theory but we are still waiting for all of the old items to work in customization…not to mention the poor Vandagyre who even more items don’t work on. What’s the point of a new pet if you can’t even customize it? I don’t think we should have any new pet until customization works

If they're gonna release a new pet they need to give us new pet slots cause I do not have room! Lol. I will agree with all the comments though that it would be very frustrating to have a new pet that can't use majority of the wearables. I have a Maraquan Wocky and it's a newer Mara color, and many of the older Maraquan wearables don't work on him and even that drives me bananas!

Genuine question for @1jediboy - when you say you fixate on colors being complete, you are aware that there isn't a single color outside of the four basic colors that every pet is available in and TNT has stated repeatedly in the past they never intend to make every color available for every species, yes? Their ethos has been that they want colors to feel a bit special, and keeping things from completion gives reason to try different things with different species, if I recall correctly.

I guess that just sounds like a really frustrating thing to be invested in to me, when the creative team has already mentioned that's not their goal.

I'm sure TNT does stuff like this on purpose though ("accidentally" putting things out there and taking them away), because it generates talk and interest and more people tend to spend more money. The 'any publicity is good publicity' sort of thing.

I'd love a Varwolf, as long as they're FULLY customizable! Unlike the poor Vandy's. The only thing that's kept me from getting a faerie Vandy, is how it CAN'T WEAR ANYTHING. If they do release the Varwolf, please let it be able to wear everything first. T_T

They simply cannot reverse convert wearables for new neopets. There is WAYYY too many of them. And its an unrealistic ask for such a small team. They can't introduce all colors at release either- its part of neopets tradition, and one of the only things people get excited for on neopets.

IMO. I don't agree with never releasing a new neopet because of the customization system. Neopets is ABOUT raising up pets; and the lack of new pet releases makes things feel stale. Every time they release a new species, the chance increases that someone who DOESN'T use the site will be tempted to join if they really like the design. Or for current people to stick around.

IMO; Jumpstart was wrong in the firstplace for making neopets a dressup site. It was never feesable if they ever wanted to introduce new pets. So at this point- I wouldn't care if Varwolf was even styles only. However, that would be unfair to people who like customization. So IMO; they should open up a thread for people to suggest what clothing wearables they want converted for varwolf and Vandy. But with new species releases we have to accept that not all wearables will be converted.

All this talk about wearables not working for a possible new Neopet, I was curious...

In total, there are 24,663 wearables as of today. However, a huge chunk of them are wearable by all Neopet body shapes (e.g. backgrounds, trinkets, foregrounds, etc.) and are species-specific outfits (like Pet Day releases and PB clothing) or are for Babys/Mutants/Maraquans.

Only about 8,500 wearables are left that are wearable by basic shaped Neopets. Still a huge task, but even if TNT selected a small portion, like 500, to backdraw for a new species (or Vandagyres!) that would still leave a new species with a sizable wardrobe to select from.

(Let's not talk about how there are still >2,100 wearables that are Flash-only and need to be converted to HTML5.....)

Saw the headline & got overly excited,

No hate towards Gelerts + Lupes,

I just always felt we needed more breeds represented:
curled tails, floppy or feathery ears, short legs, fluffy thick coats,
but a WOLF type?! That would actually be awesome!

I say this as someone who's been begging TNT for a new species at every survey, a chimera of some sort was even one of my most
hoped for besides missing species..

A new species is very much needed and the sooner we get it the better,
otherwise, like the Vandagyre,
it'll lose out on wearables the longer we wait!

But this design..what is this???
The head could work but that body is so bizarre to me...

And do we really need more neck fur?
(they're a pain to customize around with existing species as is, imo)

They still haven't finished converting the "hats without hair" wearables from hat zone to static. I think there was just one guy doing it, and there was a big chunk done and then nothing...
Not even all the hats in one collection (Altador Cup hats and jester hats) were converted. there are over 200 left to do.

i am all for new species. if they designed it well, it should be able to stand alone with backgrounds and foregrounds. i wouldn't mind if it wasn't immediately customizable with clothes.

I don't like that pet which I guess is a good thing for me if they end up releasing it since customization is very important to me and a new pet wouldn't be able to wear much.

Not a fan of this design at all- but so thrilled for the idea of a new neopet release! I just hope it isn't this one. If i had to hazard a guess, and they DO go with this design, it's likely because they are trying to avoid another Vandagyre mishap and this body type will adapt well to any existing gelert/lupe clothing

That would be cool. I don’t personally mind a new Neopet not being backwards compatible with older wearables since I understand how much of a titanic effort it would be for TNT to go back and add a new body type for all multi species wearables.

Though speaking of those April Fools pets it would be cool if we could get them for like an April fools pet style like have the Varwolf as an alternate style for the Lupe or the Sharkaw as an alternate style for the Kougra. Llamameeah voters could finally get a Llamameeah style Gnorbu.

Personally I’d like the Sharkaw or Talmu best.

I was rather fond of the sharkaw as well.
And yeah, I don't want a neopet species that's extremely limited in its wardrobe like the vandagyre was. Sure, it's a lot of stuff to redraw, but on the other hand, Flight Rising has been able to introduce new modern species that can wear all the old apparel. (Of course, I think FR has a larger staff. 😒)

I think having a new species is cool! It's great to give people options and always nice to add a new pet. Good for a breath of fresh air on the site.
Having said that...
I'm a fan of vandagyres and have been so since 2015. That was ten years ago. Ten years! While I tire of the old saw that vandagyres can't wear anything (they CAN wear a lot of NC; my closet is overwhelming), it seems ridiculous at this point that common older NP items haven't been replaced or updated. Also, the items for sale in the NC Mall at this point should ALL be wearable by all species. Again, 10 YEARS! The items currently for sale and all RE-RELEASES should be wearable by vandas (AND any new species). Elite Boutique? Update it (and frankly make it a premium shop or something). Any wearable NP item that is given as a prize or RE onsite? Update it or retire and replace with a comparable item. Clearly, all the thousands of items can't be retrofitted, but the common items and anything used as an incentive (ie. prize) should be useable by all.
If the Varwolf is created as a "style" instead of a species, it will circumvent any of this hassle, because styles can't be dressed anyway.

I've liked that pet design since i first saw it as a kid but, from my own experience, pets with neck fluff are hard to customise so i'm not thrilled about it.
Also this design feels very "safe", i'd like to see something bolder than another vaguely feline creature, like quaturchin from the same batch of april fool's pets 🤔

Yeah, if they updated NC items as they got dyeworks remakes so the new species could wear the originals it would be nice. It would also change the strategic dyeworks begging.

I just remember that for years we were begging for a new species and TNT said no because of how much work it would be to update customization items so I view it as kind of a deal where they give us new species and we accept that older items won’t work with it.

It looks like a new pet to me. If they're willing to add the Varwolf, honestly, I really want to bring as many people's attention to the Quaturchin as possible. I really think that with some minor design adjustments this could be an awesome new, unique pet to add (aquatic biped that's not Maraquan??? Lupe in Halloween is a werewolf; so why this ugly new creature?!

If they could somehow design and program the clothes to be able to stretch to fit certain points and applied these "points" to the wearables and each pet, they may have to do the odd touch ups, but it would be much easier to make wearables even going forward and would make them applicable to new species. I am not sure how you would go about doing it. But I know it should be possible.

I feel bad for the new TNT having inherited the way customization works right now...

If I bought a 20 year old pet site with the goal of breathing new life into it, one of the first things I would do is try to add more species and colours bc that's like. The main foot in the door appeal of something like Neopets. Look at this cute critter you can get, come here and sign up, then you can get people to stay stay for the billion dollar stamp avatar grind once they're already invested. There's always going to be people out there who have skimmed through the list of species and not seen anything that made them fall in love, and there's so many more potential animal designs to tap for that. But.... With customization, new species comes with the near impossible daunting task of trying to make all multiple thousand wearables compatible. Given how much stuff they're working on and still need to improve, it shouldn't be a focus at all, but it'll look cheap and low-effort to a lot of people if they can't wear anything. It's a tough act to balance.

I personally wouldn't care if a new species could only have backgrounds given that most of my pets are already customized as such (+ I think a *lot* of clothes wearables look dumb on four-legged species anyway), so I'm all for it, but I see and empathize with the customization fiends from across the aisle.

Seen a few comments about this.. about TNT possibly making this a premium pet with as much as they've been pushing it lately. I'm a premium member but I really hope they wouldn't make that decision. It would be neat to see as a new pet though! I would get one for sure.

@cabbageoil I'll be real that's just what I've been assuming "World of Neopets" is, and probably where the new loading images are sourced from (they look very much like silhouetted 3d models).

Though instead of an update to Neopets-the-browser-game it's probably gonna be its own thing. Sort've like old browser Animal Jame vs its mobile app? 🤔 (We can't possibly go ahead and recode/rejuvenate neopets dot com and breathe new life into an OLD game to attract and maintain players.)

First off, we're really going back to the "50 New Neopets" 2005's April Fools prank? Like, maybe for a few Petpets, but I thought with the Llamameeah becoming the Gnorbu that was the end of any further Neopet species coming from that. We scraped the bottom of the barrel, now feels like we're chipping some wood chips.

If they're going to make a new Neopet species, why not make something original with an animal/mythical creature we don't have yet? If they need ideas they could just look through all the Petpet species (not suggesting they give one a Krawk treatment, but also wouldn't be against it).

Or, they can do what 1jediboy suggested above, the Centibyte is a high quality fan-design with all its Colours done. I'd support it.

That said, being this was revealed via the NC Mall Styling Studio, maybe instead of doing a full out new species they can have the April Fools Neopet be just a Style. Can't wear any clothing, but can at least have a unique pose. A neat idea though it's also a slippery slope, could possibly mean we'll never see a new species of Neopet (as they'll all run into the problem the Vandagyre has concerning not able to wear clothes made before their release (and refusing to retrofit)). Also what would be the "limit" of what can be Style-skin Species? Like the most obvious would be these April Fool Neopets and the "Retired" Neopets (Fuzio, Fleye, Tatsu, etc.); but why stop there? Why not finally let a Faerie be a Style-skin, or a Petpet/P3, or one of the "monster" species? It can get out of control very quickly.

Anyway we'll see what they do, but in the meanwhile I'll list a few of the 50 I'd like to see become a:

* Style-Skin: Leofinn, Mefrix (but give it the Yumack's face), Polaflint, Quaturchin, Sharkaw (or mix it's design with the Varwolfs as they're very similar; FUN FACT: I believe I voted for Sharkaw when they did the poll)
* Petpet: Adaller, Cinocopie, Furmani, Gortooga, Lamameeah (for the lulz), Lamort, Shellow, Tailee, Verme

@pikachu - I don't see how using the April fools designs that were (I assume) in the top places as potential new species is scrapping the barrel.

And while tu ring a cool petpet into an actual neopet seems cool (ignalce plz), I am not fond of using fan designs, at least not yet, I do feel that would feel like scraping the bottom of the barrel given there are still official designs unused.

Thank you to the person that linked the OG voting page. #9 on that page I WISH they would make but it doesn't say the name, however I am guessing it is the Varwolf which would make since, The one on the voting page would be the UC version and the one posted here is the converted version. Because the converted version kinda looks like the Lupe or Gellert body, I think all wearables would work just fine. Personally though I would go for the UC version, I absolutely love it and glad I wasn't around to see it lose to the Gnorbu of all things, I would have been really upset

That’s the Sharkaw, it’s actually the one I voted for way back when and I’d love for it to be a new pet now.

Actually speaking of those old April Fools pets it’s a crying shame the Cinocopie never became a petpet, it would make a perfect Petpet for an acara, presumably because it was a reject acara design.

Ugh yuck am I the only one who is deeply apposed to getting a new species any time in the foreseeable future?

I mean don't get me wrong, that fan made Centibyte is freaking awesome and I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to have it be made a real species!!

But that's not going to happen. And the main point is I really think TNT needs to focus on other things FIRST! Like finishing the plot, fixing the BD and DON, Finishing the layout already! tons of bug fixes and updating things, making NeoPass much better, finally getting ALL wearables to show up in HTML-5, (and fixing the huge pile that was not implemented right and look/behave way differently than they did in Flash!), totally overhauling Neomail and the boards, bringing them into this century at least / at last, and a bunch of other things that need doing that IMHO take precedence over throwing a new species into the mix that won't be able to wear any existing clothes prior to their date of release.

... But nobody ever listens to me, heh. So.... um... yay... for the Varwolf..... It looks..... lovely. -_-
