Upcoming January AMA; More Pages Converted

TNT have announced the date for the next AMA with Dom, the Neopets CEO. This will be held at 5pm NST on Thursday, January 23rd. It's expected to be watchable live on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram. (The announcement does not mention Twitch.)

This AMA will feature Neopets CEO Dom Law as usual. It will also include discussion with with TNT Dingo, a Neopets.com dev team member making their AMA debut. TNT Luna will return as host for the eighth consecutive month.

Questions can be submitted in advance on TNT Luna's Neoboard topic in Site Events. You can submit your own question, as well as copy as many questions submitted by others as you wish, and should follow the format shared by Luna on the first posts of the board.

There will be a Rare Item Code made available during the livestream for an unknown prize, which we'll post about here on JN once the code is released. Specifically, the announcement promises "an EXCLUSIVE universal item code redeemable at Grundo's warehouse."

In other news, earlier this week TNT has quietly updated a few more pages to the mobile-friendly site layout. At the time of writing, the Release Notes page has not been updated to announce these.

On Thursday the 9th, the Shop of Offers (home of the Rich Slorg) and General Store were given the updated layout.

On Friday the 10th (yesterday!), the New Features page also got an updated layout. In addition to center-aligned text, the update includes a few enhancements: the ability to navigate historical news without new page loads; info on the date of the latest Neopian Times publication; and an actually updated "New in NC Mall" section.

some of the images they used in the archived news are now broken or won't show because of the layout change.

I use the Shop of Offers page during my Dailies to quick jump to Customise or Inventory for the Quest Log quests. Customise, one click. Not three. Inventory, one click. Not two. Don't even get me started on trying to navigate to the News or Quick Ref pages on the new layout. I will Google it, or click around on the site until I get to an unconverted page. No idea how it is on mobile, I don't use it and realise it's probably for the best, but I've always hated the mobile version on desktop. Wish they'd give us the option

Oof that New Features redesign is lazy... all they did was shove it in a centered div with no flex-flow wrapping properties

begging TNT to learn that CSS can work differently (and better) for mobile and desktop, it just takes a LITTLE extra effort...

Chromebook hates the New Features page. The scrollbar is basically non-existent. SMH I don't see this page needing any revisions. I'd rather just play Bildge Dice

Once again begging TNT to make the new layout OPTIONAL.
I'm a desktop user. I don't go on Neo on my phone EVER and I HATE the new layout.

Might be good for Mobile users, but not PC users. What used to be 1 click for several tasks, now is multi. Definiately NOT a fan of the new layouts. Trying to find things is ridiculous. Again no research before changing things. Just because they can do a thing, doesn't mean they should do a thing.

It's interesting that the Shop of Offers page still shows on the old layout if your are logged out, but shows on the new layout if you are logged in.

Why is the text all centered like that on the updated pages? It looks so bad. x.x The pictures are fine being centered, but the text should be like the old version.

Also, the old news is broken now, as previously mentioned.

For everyone who doesn't use it on mobile...the new layouts aren't actually mobile friendly at all and make almost all navigation difficult. Shop of offers makes me scroll all over the page to find a moving slorg half hidden by the task bar at the bottom of the page, everything is giant (and I have my settings smaller already) on New Features and the General Store and now it's either type in addresses by memory or use the clunky new sidebar to find things like customize etc. It's truly not mobile friendly for Chrome on Android at the very least.

I 1000% agree.
They REALLY need to make the new layout optional on desktop, the new one is still terrible, even after using it for years now. My safe place in in my guild where I don't have to worry about the new layout and can navigate normally.

every time a page gets converted a small piece of me crumbles into dust. mobile friendly layouts in general do NOT look good on desktop, and these especially dont. the original (yes i mean ORIGINAL) layout was perfectly fine

I’ve customised myself jellyneo dailies page to include links to inventory, customise, safety deposit box (etc) so I can just go straight from the dailies page instead of clicking around on the mobile site. Recommend it as a plan b for those frustrated with multiple clicks! Not a perfect solution but better than nothing!

For some their last save haven is their guild, to others it used to be the Shop of Offers... I still use Ambra's fortress as my last bastion of easy old-site visitations. Once she too falls victim to the moloch that's taking over the site one page at a time, I might have to lock myself up in my Safety Deposit Box. Converting that will likely be such an undertaking, they're saving it for last.

@sistersparrow: I have a few links to my favourite and most useful Neo places in my FireFox' faves bar, under the navigation bar. Only one click to my SDB and aforementioned Attic :3 Definitely HIGHLY recommended.

I don't get why they converted Shop of Offers from all pages. The ads haven't loaded for a long time (good?) and 50/100 NPs is nothing with today's inflation.
Is it even possible to find shop of offers from the official website without looking at old news?

On a laptop. I've been navigating Neo with browser bookmarks for years now. (My dailies open about 10 at a time.) Not ideal, as Chrome tabs are memory hogs, and I miss some of the pretty map pages. I'm saving for a desktop tower with plenty of RAM now. I'll use a smallish TV for the monitor. Better than my Android phone experience, for sure.

At this point, I'm just glad I can play along with my online friends and with my Pets.

You know what I find odd about TNT updating the Shop of Offers? They didn't update the "Random Event" that happens on that page. That still used the old lay-out of Random Events..

Honestly.... So fed up about all of this. Like, how are they going to convince us this was actual work ? This is the tiniest update ever, and I don't get how it didn't take less than half a day to one (1) employee altogether, saying this as a web developer.

The news feature page is a long overdue, I mean this is where all the news & updates are announced. It should have been amongst the first page to ever be converted. And the new layout looks so bad. Like, don't even get me started on how the charming "neopian times" card (the most colorful item of the page) loses all its charm by not even being centered despite everything else being centered. This is litteraly the tiniest thing ever. Centering a div.

This is just an ongoing joke, I really wish TnT cared about the game enough to at least put some actual care in the tiniest updates which should have been here 3 years ago when this mess started.

really tired of sites making desktop users have "mobile friendly" layouts. if I wanted a mobile experience I'd use my phone. glad I made the old quick ref a saved link for my dailies since I don't know or care to learn how to switch pets with the new layout. tarla's non-toolbar treasures is still my go-to for the old layout and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way
I admit I prefer the new layout specifically when I'm looking at my daily quests for the first time every day because my computer never liked opening tabs from the menus with the old layout. the rest of the time? no thanks

it does look bad on desktop but unfortunately it seems the majority of peoples only access to the internet it their phone. its just the way things are going. I am glad however that atleast the sites getting updated. im sick of going between the 2 layouts. thought i do admit i like the older layout better then the newer.

I hate how the new and "improved" layout makes things... not improved. It shouldn't take multiple clicks to get to something that only takes one click on the classic site. That's just bad website design. I'm all for making things easier on mobile but it needs to be accessible for desktop users too. Not to mention the beta themes are so bright (and animated on several, which give me migraines). Also there is no way to get to quick ref from the new layout. I've searched. That's the only way to update descriptions and petpages now.

@ckvdprwx: Swapping pets is simple in the new layout! You can do so from the main page. Just click a pet and click the Inactive marker in the bottom right corner of the pop-up. Is this as convenient as the quick ref page? Of course not

I have no idea how hard it would be, but I wish they could let us choose between old and new layouts. I access neo from my phone bcuz I don't have time to sit in front of my pc to do dailies everyday, but I agree on everyone saying it's not good even on mobile. Everytime I still feel kinda lost on that main page, like I don't know how to go to other pages from there. The old layout was functional and everytime I access a page with it, I feel much more comfortable navigating. Also I find it especially annoying that the quick ref page is basically non-existent in the new layout, while that is my favorite page on the site.

The old layout is super outdated.. and I can say this 'new' one is, too. I wish they would just figure out the code, then do something updated(from both of these) and make something easy to navigate in a single swoop! Definitely needs someone who knows their way around the website and someone who knows code.

The two by two items in the general store is so bad. Too much padding and wasted space. I don’t like it on jellyneo’s layout either.
Also, for the news page, having everything center aligned makes things harder to read. But I usually get my news from Jellyneo anyway.

One of the most egregious things about the new layout is how many "links" you can't right click/long press and open in a new tab. They made a lot of them into just elements with onClick events. It's annoying at best and inaccessible to anyone using assistive technologies at worst.

As for the news, it's div-ception with ridiculous padding wasting so much space. If you're going to do that, at least make use of media queries and make multiple columns instead of stacking things on desktop.

One of the things I dislike about the new layout is you no longer have your active pet visible, all customized, in the upper left. That's why I dress them, so I can see them as I navigate the site. Sure, you can click on the little circle and see them, but as soon as you scroll or click anything else they disappear.

Also, the News update??? My main grip with it is that the box is too short. I have a big screen, I want to be able to see everything at once

I use the Food Club to navigate to the old version for links (which I figure they will eventually also take away...but maybe others can use it too?). I don't actually do food club bets often, but I use the page to help me find my way to certain things and for easier clicking for customizing and getting to my inventory...
