Altador Cup News and Updates

  • May 14, 2011, 5:56 am NST - Team Darigan Citadel

On to the first of our returning champions now, the Darigan Citadel. Along with Roo Island, they returned to the top bracket last year - having a serious shot at the top position. The Citadel fared better though, attaining third, a podium position (the first former champion to ever do so).

The Citadel will be looking to capitalise on their success as they return stronger than ever. Having been a top team for most of their history, they seem fairly capable. It's merely a question of if they can keep it up, and avoid a form of pre-winners curse.

The old team of Layton Vickles, Kep Bonnefie, Tandrak Shaye, Tormo Frein and Reshar Collifey are returning, with Mungo Lifler watching from the side lines. They are on top form, and certainly their stats paint them as one of the strongest teams of the Cup.

On paper, of course, they are slightly weaker than Krawk Island. But the tricky thing about paper is that it rarely translates into play. DC has a serious shot at winning this year, and provided they don't slip up there are few who could stop them.
  • May 13, 2011, 3:00 am NST - Team Moltara

Sticking with the theme of wildcards from yesterday's post, Team Moltara is going to be a really interesting one to watch this year.

The team only premiered last year, with a lineup of Aldric Beign, Mor Gollog, Tulah Kisner, Vere Polnicek, and Zax Bannet, and their hopes were high. The previous new starters Shenkuu had dominated the top of the leaderboard when they had been introduced.

Sadly, a repeat wasn't on the cards. Moltara became the new Faerieland, losing on practically all fronts and walking away with 18th position - dead last. Moltara are now ranked the worst team in history at both Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown.
The blame game was in operation before the Cup had even ended. Was it bad players joining and hoping for a repeat of Shenkuu? Was it something to do with the recent plot featuring the land? The most important question, however, was if these factors would change for the coming year.

In all honesty, no one can say. Moltara is charting new territory for the Cup, and no matter what happens it is going to be very interesting. One year blip or career failures, Moltara's going to be talked about a lot this year.
  • May 12, 2011, 4:08 pm NST - The countdown to sign-ups has begun! AC6 is just around the corner.

Many believe that Dasher Soley will be retiring from Team Krawk Island this year. The team profile image for Krawk Island shows the team's favourite player, while the team background shows the new Shoyru player discovered last year (Feldon "Dinksy" Collibridge).

Krawk Island's "Dasher" Soley may have hung up his sling, but that doesn't mean this Yooyuball legend hasn't been busy. When asked what he's been up to lately, "Ol' Dash" replied, "Oh, you know... anything to keep me competitive juices flowin'. I enjoy a good game of Armada from time to time, plus I've been teachin' me Blurtle, Go-Go, to play Deckball. Other than that, though... *sigh*... just a lot of waiti-I mean, whittling. I love to whittle."

The Lost Desert Team profile art depicts a story the team has already feared: their teammate Lamelle Turow has been traded and will be playing for Maraqua this year.

We have also discovered a set of frames representing each team. These may be given away as team freebies.

  • May 12, 2011, 5:48 am NST - Team Virtupets

It's not all about big hitters in the Altador Cup - there are wildcards as well, and Virtupets is certainly one of the most interesting.

Teams on lower standings should take note, Virtupets is a working example of how to turn your game around. Starting out on 12th and falling to 16th by the second Cup, Virtupets know how the bottom of the board feels - and now they are experiencing life at the top. A steady rise back to 12th between the third and fourth Cups set the stage for last year's dramatic action where Virtupets finished in 6th.

After losing the straggling form of Kerib Vickers, and replacing the aging hardware of the old Goalinator, the current team of Keetra Deile, Sela Pretore, Weldar Xupenfarb, the Goltron, and the XL Striker seem fit to make a real run on the top bracket this year. Strangely though, a lot of pundits are predicting a fall from Virtupets - perhaps due to the sheer number of recovered former champions vying for the top spots. Though perhaps this will be to the teams advantage, allowing them to strike bigger teams when they least suspect it?

One thing's for sure, Virtupets are a team that will be watched with interest.
  • May 11, 2011, 6:08 am NST - Team Lost Desert

The sixth annual Altador Cup is only just around the corner, and the teams are all warming up for another year of thrilling action! If you're still unsure of which team you want to join, then never fear! Over the coming days, we'll be spotlighting each of the teams to help you make your mind up. We'll start with the last team to win the Cup - the Lost Desert.

Last year's champions are set to return in the sixth Altador Cup, which could well become a battle of champions as so many previous winners slog it out at the top of the standings.

It's been a slow but steady upwards journey for the desert natives, and they've made some sacrifices on the way in the form of Wyett Tuggins, 'Dirty' Navers, and most recently Lamelle Turrow. Starting off in 5th position in the first Altador Cup, and quickly working up to a top bracket position from the third Cup onwards, it was clear to many that it would only be a matter of time until they took home the title. Although many predicted the desert's win last year from the offset, in the end it was still a tense battle between the eventual champions and Kreludor. Now that the Lost Desert's year of glory is drawing to a close, the question is on everyone's lips - can they do it again?

On the field, the desert team appear to be up to the task, with Leera Heggle heading up the team of Derbi Azar, Luvea Trivon, and Vonde Cayle - and a new, as yet unnamed Kiko player may well turn out to be the ace up the desert's sleeve. But with so many former champions in the top two brackets last year, can the Lost Desert hold their own against teams that have been in their perilous position before, and recovered? It's perilous, of course, because the Winner's Curse is looming its very capable head. There isn't a single winner who has managed to hold on to a top tier position during the following Cup. Krawk Island, the Cup's supposed strongest team, only managed to cling on to 7th last year. It seems doubtful that the Lost Desert could fare better.

And off the pitch, there are more problems for the team. Many people (rightly or wrongly) attribute part of the desert's success to the performance of several groups of organised All-Star players joining the team to boost their success. These groups are typically fairweather friends, and chances of them all returning to the desert's ranks this year are slim.

It's a dark picture for team Lost Desert - but there's light at the end of the tunnel. The Altador Cup is a tournament of surprises and upsets. Few people expected Team Brightvale's sudden victories at the start of last year's Cup, and the steady rise of Team Virtupets seemed to come almost from nowhere. With or without the help of freelance All-Stars, the Lost Desert have been serious contenders for the last three Cups. If players give it their all, the Lost Desert may just be able to repeat last year's victory.
  • May 5, 2011, 11:37 am NST - With the news of new team players arriving this year, lets take a closer look at the new teammates.

Team Faerieland has a new uniform set to accompany the new team colors this year. The new Shoyru player, Elbin Kroe taking over for Babolino looks pretty excited about this years game!

Lamelle Turow may be leaving the Lost Desert team this year, but the new confident Kiko player is pumped and ready to take over!

Team Maraqua players will be sad to see that Dorina Hals will not be returning. The addition of Lamelle Turow will not let them down!

Team Tyrannia will be losing Elbin Kroe, but gaining this new krawk player!
