2017 Altador Cup Tournament

Press Tour

Below is an archive of the 2017 Press Tour blurbs for each returning team.

Celebrities Turned Snobs?

"What's the point of having a team with strong contenders and the best sports gear in all of Neopia, when all you do is relax both off-season and during the tournament?", an angry Altadorian who prefers to remain anonymous complains. "They might as well just be in the organizing committee and retire as players. Why do they need to hurt the sentiments of loyal fans?" The Altador team could not give us their response to this as they were busy deciding between Slushies and Smoothies for serving as refreshments. Their spokesperson later got back to us to report that they decided to go with Slushies.

The Team Now Knows the Score

King Hagan's indirect warning to Team Brightvale before AC XI seems to have worked well in his favour. We now have all reason to believe that the closed door meeting he had with one of the members of the team might actually have been a deal made between the two-Perform well and prevent what happened in AC IV. The team shot up to the 6th place in AC XI, when they had never entered the top 10 before, ever. Let's hope they continue to improve this year as well and that no more foul play is involved.

"Shaye Fever" Strikes Again

Team Darigan Citadel haven't had much peace during their practice sessions with their forward player, Tandrak Shaye, having fangirls cheering for him all day, every day. Some of these fans are even camping outside the stadium gates at night to be the first to enter early in the morning and watch Shaye play. Hopefully, the team will pull off something higher than just a top 10 standing this year. For now, all we know is which end of the stadium will be overflowing with fans!

Flying High Above All

Team Faerieland, who always finished at the very bottom every single year, rose gradually over the past few years and finally flew up to an amazing 4th place claim in AC XI! After their intense practice routines every morning, the team has scheduled individual workouts for the evenings in order to let Team Haunted Woods practice in their grounds, what with the latter's misfortune in their home land. The already massive fan base will now need additional seats at the Colosseum to accommodate their growing numbers!

Caught In A Cursed Place

If the Winner's Curse has hit anyone badly, it has got to be for the Haunted Woods team. The players insist that there is negative energy affecting the stadium where they practice in their land. The faerie queen, hearing about this misfortune, kindly offered her palace grounds for the team to practice in once the Faerieland team is done for the day. "We can feel the change in the air around us after moving away from that dreadful place", said team captain, Krell Vitor. "We're grateful to Queen Fyora for her generosity in inviting us to practice in her land. Her sportsmanship is truly commendable."

Everyone's New, Favourite Boy Band

In a team full of Kikos, we ran into Erli Quinnock who is being trained in agility under the strict supervision of "Poke" Cellers. This all male team broke their losing streak in AC X and did not disappoint their now-growing fan base in AC XI. When asked about the thought of adding female players to the team, Cellers commented, "We are considering this decision for sure, but perhaps not this year. We've had tough players like Helmo Timm in the past, and it's definitely something we're open to doing again in the future."

Time to Open Up the Sails

If you've not been moving forward (or backward for that matter), then you probably need a push. Team Krawk Island have been stagnant in their standings and it's hard to remember the 3 podium finishes they had in the past, one with the gold trophy in hand! Garven Hale seems to be burning the candle at both ends and making his team do the same as well. "I'm remindin' my mates of what they were and what they can be and we're workin' twice as hard to get our hands on the gold, once again".

Holding Their Heads High

When a top-tier contender drops down to the 12th position in the Finals table, fingers are bound to point to the team's captain. But Derlyn Fonnet looks far from being unnerved by this. "Well, they need 'someone' to blame. But this will not affect either my performance or the rest of the team's gameplay. We will get back on field and prove the critics wrong. After all, action does speak louder than words".

Let's Start From Scratch

After hearing rumours about Team Lost Desert going through weeks of team gameplay routine analysis, we decided to have a look at what they're actually up to. The team seemed to be working hard to push their performance to the peak. Though we couldn't get close enough to hear what Leera Heggles kept telling each of his team members, we did notice Vonde Cayle being called in by the captain multiple times. Is there a rift in the team? Why else was the forward being called often? We're eagerly awaiting their first match to see what's new.

The Underwater Drill

There are some perks of coming from a land that's underwater (if that counts as a land at all, that is). The Maraquan team have been going through regular agility drills, pushing their limits with the added resistance of water from their home land, where they practice. This has been helping tremendously in boosting their speed and heart rate. An obstacle course filled with kelps and coral reefs seems to be perfect for improving tackling skills as well. We sure hope this is going to make a major difference to the team's gameplay this year!

Built On Hope

A large fan base and a huge number of well-wishers are sure to follow Team Meridell during the Altador Cup every year. Even though they have never brought the legendary cup home, the team has always stood out from the crowd in every tournament. "Wizard" Windelle took time out from practice to comment, "My team mates are amazing when they play and I'm pleased with their steady performance every year. I do hope to push them a lot further this year and I have the utmost confidence that they will not disappoint me".

Never A Quitter

They say you lose only when you don't pick yourself up after a fall. Well, this certainly seems to be the mantra that drives Team Moltara. "We joined a lot later than the other teams for the tournament and we've come a long way from where we used to be", stated Aldric Beign. "I have great faith in my team mates and I see the effort they put in each day during practice. Time will decide what happens next, but our efforts will never go in vain."

Do Sequels Live Up To Expectations?

What mysterious training they went through in the last season, no one knows for sure, but it does seem to have helped Team Mystery Island, considerably well. The team rose dramatically from their disappointing 15th place in AC X to an astounding 1st place in AC XI! Volgoth, pleased with his team's performance in the previous tournament has planned to use the same tactics and training once again. But will it fare well a second time?

Life Is a Game

When you live in a land with games at every street corner, how can you not have great players from there? Team Roo Island seems to enjoy every moment of playing Yooyuball, and this has always reflected in their standings. They have had their bad days, but their gaming spirit never dies. Whether they make it to the podium again this year or not, it's always a joy to watch a team play just for the love of playing.

Keeping It Cool

Team Shenkuu played brilliantly in their initial years of participating in the Altador Cup, much to the surprise of all Neopians. From being strong contenders in the tournament, the team dropped in their performance in AC V and have since been struggling to make a comeback. But they're are keeping it cool and practicing hard as always. Even Xana DiLanche is a lot more confident on field and has been staying focused on the game during their practice sessions. Perhaps the off-field friendship which the team shares with many other teams has helped bring about this change in her?

What Goes Up Must Come Down

If there is a team that has shown signs of both drastic improvement and terrible deterioration from year to year, it's Team Terror Mountain. Their standings at the end of AC XI came as a shock to all as the team fell from their 5th place position in AC X to 15th place last year. They will surely rise again, but there does seem to be an inevitable fall after every rise. Could another player trade with Team Tyrannia help break this jinx?

The Rise of the Underdog

Ever since the drastic change in ranking in AC VIII, the once jinxed Team Tyrannia has never looked back. Catching up with the team after their daily practice sessions, we managed a brief exchange with the captain. Loryche spoke with the look of a winner in her eyes, unperturbed by the beads of sweat on her face; "The Forsaken Five may or may not have been jinxed. My team is throwing all they've got into the game. We're aiming for perfection in play this time. Nothing less will do."

Sloth a Sponsor?

Few may have heard of this rumour that keeps getting brushed under the carpet-Is Dr. Frank Sloth sponsoring the Virtupets team for the tourney every year? As silly as it may sound (considering the fact that Sloth has been imprisoned for years now), our sources have reason to believe that there is a contract of some sort that exists between them, because of which Sloth's minions may be providing a unique set of gear to Team Virtupets to 'help' them win gold this year. The Altador Cup Committee, not wanting to take chances, is reportedly scrutinizing the team's equipment to make sure no malpractice is involved this year.
