Urgent: Account Access Issues

🚨 FEAR NOT, NEOPIANS! 🛠️ An update from the Neopets Team:

We know yesterday’s technical difficulties were stressful for our community, and we’re here to provide you all with an update. Firstly, thank you to our incredible players for their patience, understanding, and for being so vigilant.

On Monday, 20th November at approximately 8:30AM PST, we were alerted to an issue on-site where users were finding themselves logged into incorrect accounts. The site was taken down shortly after for emergency maintenance to protect our players. We remained offline while our team conducted thorough investigations and fixes.

Unfortunately, this cache error occurred as we are in the midst of upgrading our infrastructure and service provider. We can confirm that while players may have appeared in other accounts, no changes were made to accounts. We understand that this was a major concern for our players but rest assured your account remains unchanged and as you left them.

Services are now operating normally and The Neopets Team is continuing to monitor the site closely. Our system migration will be complete by 22nd November 2023. If you are still experiencing any issues, please contact our Customer Support team by submitting a ticket here: https://support.neopets.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

We truly apologise for the inconvenience and concern this may have caused. Thank you to everyone who submitted reports, and for supporting us as we worked hard to bring Neopets.com back up and running!

In short, the issues seen were a caching issue. Accounts themselves were not being accessed, so it's very unlikely that anyone would have been able to remove items, NP, or pets from your account. That being said, it was still quite a privacy invasion, as things like inventory contents and bank accounts were visible to others.

On the brightside, this issue was stemming from Neopets making efforts to upgrade their server infrastructure, so hopefully this means a speedier site with less lag and HTTP errors in the future!

UPDATE, 1:50 PM NST: As of ~1:30 PM NST the site seems to be restored for most users. Some users are still experiencing intermittent error messages, however.

If you're experiencing issues, try removing the www. from the URL, so you're just visiting https://neopets.com, for example.

UPDATE, 8:56 AM NST: TNT has turned on maintenance mode, and the site is now inaccessible, hopefully for them to get to the bottom of this issue!

Neopets is experiencing some very severe account access issues this morning. It appears that the site is returning page views from other people's accounts, allowing you to see account data that another Neopian would see, such as their site theme, pets, bank account, inventory, etc.

This began around 8:00 AM NST, and currently we're unable to find reports or prove whether someone can do something to your account if they see your data. For example, we can't verify whether someone can take Neopoints out of your bank account if they can see your bank account and balance.

In addition to seeing account data from other Neopians, random pages seem to be coming back as 404 not found or redirecting you to another page instead. (Personally, I can't access the Quest Log this morning—it keeps redirecting me to a password reset page for someone else's account of all things.)

We'll be monitoring the situation this morning and keep this post updated.

Happening to me right now, can't access anything on their accounts though! Just shows me logged into theirs but still all my info (bank, inventory, settings, etc)

This used to happen to me like once every year or so, and it freaked me out big time as a kid. It's definitely happened a few times after conversion, too, and I'm PRETTY sure it maybe even happened once or twice since JS took over. Wild to see this happening to EVERYONE all at once, though...

I was trying to feed my pets, refreshed because I forgot who I fed, and saw a whole nother theme and pets. I was like, What is happening, and I am uncomfortable that they are walking around with over 3mil np on hand. XD

I just encountered this issue while going to the Neoboards – I suddenly saw a Xweetok as the main and it was WEIRD. Also I couldn't access the Petpages where I get Turmy and Food Club info. Hope they get it fixed soon!

Just to offset some concerns, I attempted to deposit neopoints in the bank when it was showing me in someone else's account and got an error. I don't think anyone discovered a way to exploit it before tnt took the site down.

This happened to be twice this morning. I was so surprised to see another users information on the side but when I clicked "inventory" it always re-set back to mine.

I have two screen shots if it is needed for anything - i saw two different peoples accounts. I had been on neoboards to ask a question and then was trying to deposits np in bank -- it wouldn't let me. then I looked at the screen more closely and noticed that it wasn't mine because I didn't have anywhere near that many np.

I have a couple screenshots of the what pages caused me to be booted into other users accounts. I will also say that while I could the other users username, main pet, NP and NC amounts; I wasn't able to actually *access* any of it. It would redirect me to my stuff or I would get an error.

I did most of my dailies earlier, but I was still logged in and had the BD page open and it just suddenly turned into the Red Pteri message page when I clicked battle.

Maybe the frozen 60k bot cabal is to blame? Payback? Probably have nothing better to do with their lives.

I've kept the UNs of everyone I got a window in to, so crazy when my other-halfs account appeared as one of them. Thankful we pin protected all actions. I don't think I've ever seen a glitch like that on anything before, user account security and privacy totally out the window. Wild.

I was working through my quest log no problem, changed a customization a lil bit, tried to click to go to the homepage where all your pets are lined up so I could see it better (used an item that isn't visible on the customization editor yet) and it thought I was trying to reset my password. Then I tried again, and that time it showed me someone else's homepage with someone else's pets. Very unnerving! I hope it's an easy fix and it doesn't happen again as soon as the site comes back.

I was trying to do my dailies, went to the bank to collect interest, clicked collect interest immediately without realizing it wasn't my account. It was stuck trying to process the collecting, so I don't believe we can do anything to the accounts we saw.

My first thought was confusion cause went from premium to having a banner in the middle of my screen, but the main page I was seeing the issue was the inventory, which was still my inventory with some one else's pet and theme, but just in case moved all my stuff to SDB and Pin locked everything

I will also add.. when i tried to go to the pet page where you see all pets -- it told me to see this page you must log out and reset password. i told it to send password reset email. But i never got it. I keep seeing people say they had or were adding a pin -- can anyone tell me a little more about that?

when i noticed the glitch i immediately went to the bank to deposit my on-hand NP and almost died when it said i didn't have a bank account, only to realize it was someone else's account. Refreshed and I was in someone else's bank and was able to see their balance before I finally got to mine to make the deposit before the site went down

i wonder if this is like the issue steam saw a few years back - it didn't actually grant usage to other people's accounts i don't think, it just cached different people's logged-in versions of things like the homepage by mistake and sent those versions to many, many more people.

so if multiple people saw the same account, and maybe especially if the account was different per page, that might back up this theory. the slight irony is that logging in to "protect" your own account meant possibly opening it up to being cached and displayed as well, so it's good neo went down.

I had several pages open at once with only one page repeatedly showing other accounts and not letting me leave my inventory page no matter what I did. I closed the page that was glitching and none of the other pages I opened ever glitched.

However I did start checking my all my stuff before they took the site down for maintenance and there is roughly 2 mil missing from my bank account. It did indeed appear to be my account and not someone else’s. This page was not glitching and all the rest of the info matched. Just not the amount.

Can stolen neopoints be tracked, or is it true that you can get items returned but you will never get neopoints returned? Or is it likely the incorrect number was still a part of the glitch?

@fluffingaroundthetop: This is the theory some of us at JN are thinking--problems with the caching of requests on the Neopets web servers.

Too many coincidences in what people are seeing on high traffic pages (e.g. two folks seeing each other's accounts while BOTH playing Solitaire, or seeing other's bank accounts), along with other, more unique actions not having the issue (e.g. purchasing an item from someone's shop, very unlikely anyone else is doing that same exact thing to share the cache).

It's also looking very unlikely that anyone was able to actually *DO* something with the NP, items, pets, etc. on someone's account.

Still a pretty big deal that the account data was visible to someone else, but probably nothing actually getting stolen.

@mavegibson: If that's correct--big IF since we're just speculating based on what behavior people have been reporting--then yes, if you weren't online at the time, your account data would not have been visible.

You would have had to be online visiting pages across Neopets during the issue in order for your data to be cached and then shown to someone else.

I wake up really late generally, and went to go refresh the pages I normally do all my dailies on, and oop, Red page. I had two days left of daily quests for my prize, I hope that if it's down long that they compensate us for losing our streak on the daily quests.

I can confirm this as I was one of the first to experience and report the issue. I was trying to get to my inventory and was taken to the Pets page of two different premium users. I had full access to the account and it showed all their NP and NC and I could click around (because I was trying to desperately scramble out of this). It never took me to a login page, I was just dropped in. I reported it immediately to TNT. I'm hoping other users chose to do this rather than to take advantage. All the love!

This has happened a few tines before in the past years. They always fix it and suggest passwords get changed. I suggest adding the 2FAS step, it's very easy to use.

It all depends on how many people they have to work on it, when they start work (accounting for timezones, and if they do or don't have people on payroll to react to emergencies any hours of the day), and how much damage was done to accounts.

Assuming, temporarily, that it's a big ol' mess and pets, items, and currency have found their way to the wrong places, then they may have to track this back to the start of the glitch and roll everyone back - and then check that it rolled back correctly, before letting anyone back on.

Assuming, temporarily, that nothing was truly compromised then it still could take a good deal of time to figure out how it happened and stop it happening again.

Hopefully whatever has happened, or will happen, has minimal negative affects on active players, and we can all get back to it as soon as possible.

Just checked - 4 pm EST/1 pm NST - and still the Red Pterie banner.

I was on earlier this morning when it started happening, wish I had thought to take a screenshot. I had clicked on a pet page I had bookmarked and got 9he 404 message. Then I clicked on the Games room and someone else's account page popped up. It was pretty freaky, so I immediately went to the site events board and someone had just said that it had happened to them. I posted, then went back to the Games room and it happened again, but a different other user than the first time.

That was when I decided to logout and try to come back later. Yep! I will definitely be changing my pws and PINS when the site is up again.

I did my daily quest log early this morning and have one day to go on a Draik trans potion... I hope everything will still be in my account and I get my potion tomorrow. I hope my account wasn't affected in any way, from what I read it shouldn't be. Fingers crossed.

I also hope they fix it soon and thoroughly.

Even if nothing has been stolen from accounts, it's still a big liability to have others be able to have a look at your account and possibly see whether it's worth hacking or what your birthday is.

I refreshed the Maintenance Pteri page I left open this morning and it took me back to the BD. I was able to battle, earn the np and prizes with no glitches. I signed out not to tempt fate.

Can confirm taking off the www works - once you're on site you're alright except for a few links which haven't been updated to remove the www. I wonder if it'll be a long term change.

Freaky! I tried to log into my side account at 2 pm NST and the jscript button seemingly couldn't process the log in, then I close my browser, reopened it and I was logged into my side account. Then I went here to see if perhaps Neo was down only to learn this!! O_____O

It reminds me of a very similar incident it once happened to me a long time ago (perhaps in 2009 or 2010) during the Viacom ownership. I was browsing the NC Mall when I noticed I had another user's name and NC amount. But this was affecting only the NC Mall section, not the ''standard'' pages like inventory or bank where my username was showing.
I remember the person answering my ticket saying "This is only a caching issue" so I shouldn't worry (of course by then I had already changed my pw).

While similar, this new problem seem much more worrisome as people can look into one's sensitive data.
I wasn't around when it happened, so from what you guys gathered I should be safe, but I'm afraid my sister was online at the time O_O and perhaps didn't notice, and I cannot reach out to her now.

Sending scores will be impossible unless they REALLY fix the site so it loads with www again. For months I've been twlling people NOT to load the site by typing neopets.com cause that doesn't add the www and it's what makes converted games not load and flash games not send score.

So yeah...impossible right now, sorry. Games won't work without www.

Ok. I managed to access the site WITH www by first going to the NC mall (I only did cause my language had gone back to spanish), then going back to the main page from there.

The site in general is working WITH www for most people. Pet pages give you 404 unless you take that out (make sure you only take the www. out)

My neopets are stars, my active neopet is a gear, and petpages don't load. Everything else seems to be working fine.
Erasing the "www" from the URL now redirects me back to the www version (of the same page)

Oh I know what happened. They forced www, which was a great decision. A lot of people load the site by typing neopets.com and it ended up without www, which made games not load or send score.

Problem is, they maybe don't know pet pages were only working without www since yesterday...

Now there is not way to force no www.

Interesting. Just accepted a Pet transfer, and saw the Pet image with no BG, as usual. Customized the Pet and saved. Now it shows a new one for me: Pet image is broken text symbol in top left corner, with a big, bold text name (centered, top, initial capitalization) between a full custom image and a cog.

Thanks to a HC post... you can edit your pet's homepage -- without changing anything -- hit the Preview button and view your own petpage. Doesn't work with anyone else's petpage though. Hope TNT finds a fix soon!
