Spooky Food Eating Contest

Spooky Food Eating Contest Coverage

The Perlious Catacombs Door Outcomes

As part of the Perilous Catacombs step in the Spooky Food Eating Contest, users explored the catacombs below Neovia by opening doors. Each door was presented with some introductory text describing what could be heard or seen, and based on this, users selected one of three options to open it. If they selected the correct answer, users were awarded a prize, but picking either incorrect answer resulted in a curse. This is a record of all of the outcome text for the doors in the step.

Spyders - Cinnamon Scent
A cool, faintly cinnamon scent wafts toward your nose. You look down to find purplish slime oozing out from under the door. Oh, darn. Those were new shoes, too.
Success - Pull on a pair of gloves and open the door
No slime for you! The door opens to reveal a pile of Spyders crawling all over each other. You see an item in the middle of the pile and reach in for it. The Spyders try to bite your hands, but you were clever and put on gloves, so they can't stop you.

What do Spyders need with one of those, anyway?
Failure - Say hello in a friendly voice
You call out, hearing your voice quaver a little. You're not scared! Just because you're wandering around in an evil lair hunting a dangerous monster... No one answered, so you go in. In the middle of the floor, in a puddle of slime, sits a pile of Spyders. They blink at you curiously. From out of nowhere a curse flies at you.

"Why didn't you duck?" Kell asks, hauling you back to your feet. You can only shake your head wearily.
Failure - Burst through the door violently
You burst in, scattering a slimy pile of Spyders. Looks like they are afraid of you. Maybe you won't be cursed this time! And then one of the Spyders kicks a suspiciously glowing purple gem as it disappears into a crack in the wall. The curse strikes you in the face.

Some days you're lucky. Today is not one of those days.
Spyders - Skittering
You hear a skittering sound, like thousands of tiny bug legs crawling over every inch of the next room. Of course, it could be something nice in there. What noise do animated lollypops make?
Success - Burst through the door violently
You charge in, trampling a pile of Spyders. They scramble to get away, more scared of you than you are of them. Intriguingly, they left something behind.

How did that get down into the catacombs? You may never know.
Failure - Say hello in a friendly voice
No answer, but you didn't really expect one. You just sort of hoped whatever is inside is sentient, because Rukis sometimes skitter and they're usually nice. Instead, you find a pile of Spyders. Their fangs gleam in the torchlight. You would have preferred Rukis.

Apparently curses can be transferred through bites. How unsanitary.
Failure - Open the door a crack and peer cautiously
You ease the door open, peering around the edge as it slowly swings wide. A pile of Spyders, legs wiggling, stands in the middle of the room. More Spyders are pouring in from cracks in the walls to join the pile. One clambers over your foot, kicking an amulet as it goes. The amulet flashes and—

You've been cursed.
Spyders - Silence
All you hear past the door is silence. It's a deep, velvety hush that crushes all hope of escape or seeing a better tomorrow. It is the sound that comes after the last bell in the universe tolls its last peal—wait, wrong script. This is just an ordinary silence.
Success - Stomp your feet emphatically
Thump! Thump! Thump! A pile of Spyders in the middle of the room breaks apart as the Spyders flee your stomping, skittering to all four corners in an attempt to get away fast enough. One scoots an item toward you as if to distract you from eating it. Like you would eat a Spyder. You don't have any catsup with you.
Failure - Burst through the door violently
In one corner of the room sits a pile of Spyders, full of wiggling legs and beady eyes. As you step closer to figure out why they've decided to form a pile, you hear a soft click and something shifts under your foot. A curse zaps you!

The Spyders disperse, snickering to each other.
Failure - Knock politely
You knock, but no one answers. Deciding that your curiosity must be satisfied, you enter the room. There is a pile of Spyders sitting there, wiggling lots of little legs at you. It's like the critters are saying hi. Should you wave back, or just flee before they decide to cover you like Scarabs do? While you are dithering, Corbin leans against the wall and accidentally sets off a trap. "Aw, sorry," he says. You're not sure he's as sorry as he could be. Is he trying not to laugh?
