Finding Ian
Published: July 10, 2010

It's a dark and stormy night. Zador and Grog are Ian-hunting. Apparently, you agreed to help them. At the bottom of each question, there will be another part of the story, each with choices to make. Hover over your choice to see what to do next! Scroll down to question 1 to get started!

1. Hi Zador, Ian, and Grog! I was wondering, why is the Rod of Dark Nova the most expensive item? Shouldn't the items won by the winners of the Style Showdown or other events be the most valuable? There are just a few of those compared to the thousands of other Rod of Dark Novas. Thanks! ~ Panini_puff
Grog: The Rod of Dark Nova is not the most expensive item; it just happens to have the highest, non-zero price in the Item DB. It's a subtle distinction that basically only I care about. Some items are very difficult to determine a price for, and as such don't have a price listed.

In my opinion, the most expensive item is the Darigan Sword of Death for a couple of reasons: 1) Only one was ever released (to a very lucky plot participant); and 2) Ten. Icons. Of. Each. Type. As in 70 constant icons of damage. If you'll excuse me, I think I'll fantasize about having Dual Darigan Swords of Death for a few minutes... *sigh*

Zador: Then again, the Darigan Sword of Death has actually been sold by said plot participant to an owner of a Darigan gallery. The new owner's lookup claims that they're willing to sell the sword for 1 billion Neopoints. The icons have never been confirmed either as far as I've heard. They're based on the icons dealt by Lord Darigan, so they're not necessarily wrong either.

Okay, so you've joined Zador and Grog in their search for the elusive Ian. But where do you look first?

Where should you begin your search?

2. Hi anonymous server bot. Anyway, I would love to know if the rumour that the varied array of 7th Birthday Tambourines increase your chance of random events is true. I have been making my pet play with one every day (about five times) and so far I have had more random events than usual...or is that just random? Also, if you redeem a Neocash card on your Petpet Park account, do you receive bonus items? Thank you. ~ ickleelle
Zador: Looks like the anonymous server bot disappeared somewhere. Guess you'll have to endure me for now.

I'm afraid there seems to be no truth to the tambourine rumour. Any increases in random events were simply a coincidence or they simply seemed to increase in frequency.

Yes, you will receive bonus items if you redeem a Neocash card on Petpet Park. :) We have a list of them found here, but it's not entirely organised right now, so you'll need to search for "neocash card" on the page.

------------------------------

You've successfully shimmied down the trapdoor into the depths of JN, which is the last place you are supposed to be. Do the admins know you're here? Well, there's a lot of ground to cover if you plan on finding Ian anytime soon, so you'd better get started.

3. Hello Grog! My, that's an interesting name. Recently on the boards, I saw a post from someone talking about something created for roleplayers, then a link to a petpage that showed a picture that contained an off site URL. Please tell me that's not allowed. ~ jamarb02
Grog: If the image was predominantly a URL and its purpose was to say "hey, go to my new site for roleplayers and we can chat" then yes, that is reportable.

------------------------------

You approach Illy and ask if she knows anything.
"I saw Ian in the Lounge earlier. He was buying up the whole stock of Diet Terry! Maybe he's still there?"

4. On Petpet Park, what's the point in having fish if you can't eat them? ~ xxmissnessiexx
Zador: Indeed, fish cannot be eaten right now in Petpet Park. They have various other uses, though: some types are used in item crafting, badges/collections, and jobs.

------------------------------

You are by the Petpet Park item bins. The only difference is that over here the noise the chute makes is even creepier. Unless Ian is inside the bins, he definitely isn't here.

5. Can someone get a Draik or Krawk from Lab Ray? I've dug through the editorial database and found JN ID: 4194 said the same thing to TNT. Only they refused to give an answer. ~ Airyvine
Grog: It hasn't been confirmed and we don't expect a straight answer from TNT anytime soon. Personally, I can't see any reason why the Lab Ray couldn't give a Draik or a Krawk for a lucky zap; after all, it is possible to get a Lutari (which were previously limited to those who signed up for the now defunct Neopets Mobile).

Sometimes, TNT likes to keep the general Neopian population guessing. *shrug*

6. This is a question concerning PetPet Park. There's a game there called Wardrobe Wars and you have to dress up your petpet in the way they show as fast as you can. Some of the clothes they let you dress them up with are really cute but not released. So I was wondering if those clothes were ever going to be released for our petpets to wear one day. ~ (I'm writing my Petpet's name) Cristianu
Zador: The clothes featured in Wardrobe Wars have all been available at some point on Petpet Park during its closed beta phase. You can still see some in screenshots of the Park's beta stages. Perhaps someday all of them will be released again (some already have) through the Park shops or the Park Mall. :)

------------------------------

OUCH! Well that wasn't a very smart move... these bins aren't very deep you know. Did you really think the noodles would cushion your fall? Perhaps you'd better be on your way.

7. Hi guys! *Steals Grog's coo--super-duper-classified-secret-documents* Will Neopets find it suspicious if I play from my Nintendo Wii and my computer? (The Wii has Internet, although it's extremely slow, the maps hardly even load so I have to guess where everything is.) If I can't get to the computer, I play on the Wii, and I switch the second I can get to the computer, meaning tons of logging out and logging back in for me. ~ sparrow44124
Grog: Boy, am I glad I had SciFi shift those super-duper-classified-secret-documents into another dimension! Too bad he never seems to be around when I want to ask him to retrieve them...

TNT know that there are a number of players who use multiple computers at different times to play, and TNT don't have a problem with that. Just be sure to log out of each when you are done!

8. On Petpet Park, how do you quit a job if you don't want to do it anymore, or if you want to restart it? ~ anonymous
Zador: Right now there's no way to quit a job yourself if you have already accepted it. You are able to get rid of the job by submitting a ticket to the Petpet Park Team though, but you should only do this if you are stuck in a glitch or if you can't complete some parts of the job due to other reasons.

------------------------------

You didn't push the button. Smart move. Either that or whatever happened when you did push it frightened you enough to keep on walking. As you walk, you hear Zador and Grog's dulcet tones coming from opposite directions. They sound like they are in trouble!

9. My question is about Petpet Park. I noticed there was the happiness factor for your petpet, and I saw someone's happiness go up once. But how do I make my petpet's happiness go up? ~ Jellymango
Zador: Happiness could go both down and up during the closed beta stages of Petpet Park. It stopped functioning this way after open beta started, but the update to profiles this year indicates it will become a working element one day. You were able to get more happiness by feeding your petpet during closed beta; however, right now you can not raise it.

------------------------------

You slip into the supply room. It's strangely neat and tidy, unlike the rest of the Graphics Department. Wow, there are a lot of crayons in here, but no sign of Ian. Maybe there's a clue or two lying about.

What do you do?

10. How can I let my friend know that their Neomail inbox is full? Do I just have to wait until they realise the reason why I can't respond to their Neomails? I feel bad because they think I'm ignoring them but I'm not. ~ toxicWA5T3
Grog: Some people I know have had this problem and they solved it by agreeing to send the person with the full mailbox a Bit of Barbed Wire.

Zador: On three separate occasions, the Neopets Team have mentioned creating an item for informing users that they have a full inbox. This item has to date not been confirmed explicitly, but it is likely that the item Foal in Box (a pun on "Full Inbox") is this intended item. Note: The item doesn't do anything special when sent, it just might be useful if the recipient understands the meaning behind it.

------------------------------

You hopped onto the conveyor belt and rode it to the end. Now you are in some random room somewhere in the depths of the Item Database and have no idea how to get back. But wait... what's that you see? You've found muddy footprints leading down the hallway. Based on the size and distance between them, they probably belong to Ian. Then again, who else would leave muddy footprints all over JN?

11. On Petpet Park, how do you get the Pumpkin Lollipop via harvesting? I went to Kripske's Pumpkin Patch, and the striped pumpkin gave out the Jack-o-Lantern Lollipop, and the three others gave out Pumpkin Goop. Is it even possible to get the Pumpkin Lollipop anymore? Thanks in advance. ~ t_c951
Zador: Unfortunately, Pumpkin Lollipops were retired and replaced with the Jack-O-Lantern Lollipops on October 22nd, 2009, 21 days after the release of the Pumpkin Lollipops.

12. When you zap a pet with the Lab Ray and it is wearing clothes, does the Ray affect the clothes? ~ anonymous
Grog: In a way, yes. If your Neopet changes species due to a zap and had been wearing clothes that the new species cannot wear, then the clothes will magically find their own way back into your closet! The clothes are otherwise unchanged by the Lab Ray, thankfully.

Who knew clothes were so smart?

Pull the door. The EndWell, what do you know? The door opened after all. In the room, you catch sight of a ginormous sack of price reports suspended from the ceiling, and Ian is standing directly beneath it! As you enter and the door closes, the bag comes crashing down on his head, knocking him unconscious! Must've been one of the old pulley setups. Drat. There's no way Ian will be in any shape to do the editorial now, but on the plus side, some price reports will finally get done, you'll make sure of that.

He smells like week old Diet Terry and has balls stuck all over him (which is probably how you managed to miss him in the first place). It turns out that ever since his losses in the JN AC Staff Tournament, he's been hiding in the ball pit, drinking Diet Terry and crying himself to sleep. When you ask him tentatively about the editorial, he says "Editorial? Who cares? Next year! Next year I will be avenged! Those Darigan Yooyus will pay! You just wait!" He then mimes shooting a Yooyuball but loses his balance and slips beneath the surface of the balls with a loud *SPLOSH*. 15. Have some fresh baked cookies I just made! Anyway, when I was looking for Organic Red Grapes, I noticed they were purple. Am I colour blind or is it a mistake? ~ alyssacats
Grog: You are not seeing things! Those grapes are definitely a shade of purple. Maybe the organic growing process used causes the colour to be off a little bit. Neopian magic! *waves hands around mysteriously*

After following the sound of Zador's voice for a few hundred yards, you run into Zador himself, who is frantically yelling something about Grog and Ian being stuck in the Content Beast's lair!

16. *Throws 42 piles of dung jelly that each split into 42 more piles of dung jelly* Hello almighty Jellyneo staffer. I hope you like dung jelly. :D I know I do! I have a question about my safety deposit box. The other day, while I was cleaning out my SDB, I put the search on "Trading Card" and I noticed that some of my cards were missing! I looked at the search demands again and noticed there was a section called "Collectible Card" where the rest of my cards were hiding. What's the difference between a "Trading Card" and a "Collectible Card"? ~ Aniqa
Zador: I don't particularly like Dung Jelly myself, but I'll send them to Rosie. :D

Collectable cards are the cards found in this IDB search and trading cards under this one. Collectable cards come from the Collectable Cards shop and trading cards came from Trading Card Game (TCG) packs sold in real life.

18. Who is mr.coconut? What exactly is TNT referencing? ~ Kaliet
Grog: Away to Jellyneo's Fantabulous Editorial Database!

Hello, TNT! I was wondering: how do you guys choose the captions that go into the contest? Do you actually go through all of them and pick the best, or is it random? Also, is it true that you can be banned from the contest if you send too many entries or something? Thanks, and have a great day! ~deboratibi

We look through as many as we can within the time allotted for that particular task, which is several hours. If we picked randomly you'd know it pretty quick. As an example (this is always fun), we went through and DID randomly select five captions from competition #1107. Here are the results:

"Ahh Mr.sneky i see you are wering your fance top" "You are wereing yor's too mr.coconut" "Speaking of coconut, were did you get the new flying hat of coconut?" "Wat coconut?" "Ohh that coconut near my had WAT a coconut on my had!" "BOOM!" "AHHH MY HEAD" "GOOD NIGHT mr.coconut" (12:30pm)

If you wanted to ask such a question from me, simply assume the answer is "yes" to each and every question on the "What NOT to ask" list. Yes, every one of them. See? So much simpler that way.

It asks for your username, the quantity you want, and if you buy Neopoints, the method of transfer. Do you guys know if this is actually owned by Neopets itself or is it just a scam? ~ username removed
Grog: Repeat after me: It. Is. Illegal.

ANY site (besides neopets.com of course) that offers Neopoints, items, pets, special services, or various other advantages for Neopets in exchange for real money is strictly against Neopets' Terms & Conditions, and if you dabble in that, your account'll be frozen. How's that for a return for your hard earned money?

noileh: TNT has addressed this a lot in the past, and the answer is most likely not. There are over 265 million Neopets in existence and even if only 1% of them got name changes, that'd still be a considerable amount of stress on the databases.

------------------------------

You took a right towards the soda supply room, but before you could make it there, something stopped you. There are telltale dents marking the corridor. Based on the size and shape, you'd wager a guess that they are from Ian's ego. He must've gone this way!

I was trying to do the job where you give food to those two Cyodrake guards, and your guide said they should ask for Snowpuffberries or whatever they're called, but they used to ask for Purple Saiberries. They asked me for the latter. Aren't those retired? How do I finish the job if they asked me for retired fruits that I don't have? Do I just forget about it? ~ chicken_dancer4444
Zador: Start by returning to Na and checking if you have a second duplicate option when talking to him. If you do, try both options as one should lead to the Snowpuffberry version of the job. If you don't get that option, send a support ticket on the Petpet Park page detailing the issue so that it can be solved for you.

25. I remember when a long time ago, when I was fairly new to Neopets, that there was a weapon called the Monoceraptor Claw. I've checked everywhere, and I can't seem to find anything on it. Does it actually exist, why can't I find anything on it, is it really powerful, and how much would one cost nowadays? ~ piglet102970
Zador: The item you're thinking about is actually called Monoceraptors Claw. Gather 'round, it's story time!

A long, long time ago, Tyrannia was invaded by an army of prehistoric creatures. The "boss" was a monstrous beast called the Monoceraptor. A single Lupe managed to defeat him in the Battledome, and was awarded the Monoceraptors Claw. Awhile later, in a somewhat controversial move, TNT decided to make this weapon more widely available so they put it in the Hidden Tower for 24 million NP. Eventually, the Claw was retired from the Tower. Nowadays, you can only obtain it through other users and the last recorded price in the Item Database is 725 million (for December 2009). The end! (If you really want to know the pet name, a little searching will give you the answer.)

One can earn a trophy for each Defenders of Neopia series (both Series 1 and Series 2), and for beating Punchbag Bob in the 1-Player Battledome. There is also a Battledome competition to see who can deal the most damage to Inflatable Balthazar (*squeak!*) that can earn you a trophy for your user lookup. Then there's the old Faerie League Key "trophy" but that was retired a long time ago... Gather 'round, more story time!

In the olden days of Neopets, you could get the six elemental faeries as Battledome challengers by signing up with sponsors, and if you beat them, your pet got the Key on their lookup and you also got sceptres. The Key was supposed to let you in to a future Battledome tournament, but that idea was scrapped, so the trophy does nothing now. The end.

------------------------------

Obviously you got your directions mixed up - the ball pit is nowhere near here! In fact, this is a dead end! Maybe you should've taken that right...

27. *Hands Zador a bucket and Ian a mirror to keep them busy* Right, Groggery dearest, I have a question (evidently). Does your hair curl to the right, or does the rest of your body just move to the left to get out of the way of its awesome? Say hey to everyone for me please. ^_^ ~ The Artist Formerly Known As Weepit
Grog: Hi everybody! You! Over there, you! You didn't wave back! That's better!

Ahem, anyway. I know it's hard to believe, but neither, Weepit dearest. I happen to have an entourage in tow that carefully aim fans at my noggin to curl my hair ever-so-slightly to the right. It's a tough job, and not everyone is cut out for it. Those who can't hack it try to find jobs with people less demanding, like Sean Combs, Mariah Carey or El Picklesaur.

Zador: *waves at Weepit and stashes bucket in a safe place*

You keep walking through the Petpet Park Portal, and spot something silky and green on the ground. No, it's not [redacted], it's a piece of Ian's cape!!

28. If I paint my Shoyru with a Plushie Paint Brush, is there any way I could get my pet to be unconverted? ~ anonymous
Grog: Sadly, once a pet is converted, there is no way to make it unconverted ever again. I wish there were; I really miss the old Robot Chomby.

Who needs a watchdog when you have one of THESE?

------------------------------

You approach Kata and Ally, and ask if they know anything.
"I saw noileh heading over to the Petpet Park Portal to work on some job guides," says Ally.
"I wouldn't be surprised if Ian was there too," comments Kata.

29. Zador! Why does your name show up as a content writer instead of an Item DB worker? ~ anonymous
Zador: I started out as a Content Writer on JN four years ago, but moved to the Item Database as a volunteer later that same year. I was eventually made the IDB overseer, and have been that since. I never really liked the IDB Crew colour on the forums though, so I asked to remain purple. :) In the latter part of 2009, I started volunteering on the Petpet Park guide section of JN, and have been listed under the Park writers on the Staff Listing since June of 2010.

You travel North for a while. Suddenly, you encounter a big, red button that says "DO NOT PUSH." Of course, that only makes you want to push it more.

30. Are you wearing any socks? *tosses Rainbow Lutari Plushie to you* ~ countrygirllm321
Grog: Nope. I have two reasons: 1) I am wearing sandals and 2) I want Dragona to stay as far away from my feet as possible!

Zador: I am also not wearing any socks at this very moment for various reasons, one being the current hot temperatures. *puts plushie in Rainbow Plushie Anagram console*

------------------------------

Congrats, you managed to sneak into one of the most restricted areas of JN - the Item Database back room. But that's probably because everyone was too busy to notice you. You should start looking for Ian and get out of here before anyone spots you.

31. Why is Neocash so hard to get? ~ koikoiberry
Grog: Do you mean from the Qasalan Expellibox? That's easy: NC won from the Expellibox doesn't make TNT any money. Without money, how could they afford to buy the cleaners and wax for mr.coconut?

CLEAN AND SHINY HUSK!

------------------------------

You pushed the button, didn't you? Tsk tsk. Suddenly, mr.coconut pops up out of nowhere and the last thing you hear before it goes pitch black, except for his flaming eyes, is GOOD NIGHT! You stumble around blindly and start running.
