Pet Lookup Captchas Removed
  • Posted by Herdy
  • Posted on December 11, 2017, 1:44 pm NST

UPDATE: The captchas are now working correctly - with no captchas on your own pet lookups, and the invisible style on all others.

Today it seems that captchas have been removed from Pet Lookups - completely, in this case, unlike the invisible versions that were added to Userlookups. It seems possible this is a glitch, and the invisible style captchas were intended to be added, as they are currently appearing when you view your own pet lookups. This follows on from an announcement in the NT Editorial saying that removal would continue if the Userlookup test was successful.

I'm still having to do Userlookup Captchas. I dunno why D:

@pigfish99 After you visit a few ULs you'll be asked to complete captchas. The only thing they did is to automatic check the "I'm not a robot" option, but if the reCaptcha asks for pictures check and other stuff you'll still need to do it.

pigfish99, 12/11/2017, 2:37 pm NST
It never does the automatic check for me. it always makes me fill out pictures.

reCAPTCHAs were first to check the box to prove you aren't a robot then it gives you a challenge to do, when they changed the RC process on user lookups, they checked the box for you and you might have to still do the challenges. I myself don't visit many ULs so it redirected me right to their lookup but if I did visit a LOT of ULs then it will force me to do the challenges before I could see ULs.

When recaptcha does the robot check it's actually querying Google about whether their records of you suggest you're trustworthy. That's why if you have a google account and are logged in you never need to do captchas, but if you aren't logged into a google account and never/rarely use google it always hits you with captchas. I've tested this on my own accounts.

They "removed" the captchas but I can't see the full list of stocks.. They giveth and they taketh away.

Bargain stocks not working has been a problem for a couple weeks now. I think it came back briefly but it's gone again.

jayjayyyyy, 12/12/2017, 4:12 pm NST
Why did they even add this stuff in the first place?

inkpot, 12/13/2017, 1:47 am NST
if this was their recaptcha "removal" scrappy was talking about you could say i'm a little miffed. if you can only visit two or three pet/lookups a day, before being prompted to click on all the traffic signs again and again and again for the next 24hrs that's not a "removal"; more like two whole free passes a day before being welcomed back to recaptcha hell again.

@jayjayyyyy: Malicious users were running bots to seek out as many accounts and pets as possible to track whether they'd be candidates for hacking and emptying to sell the contents. The CAPTCHAs prevent this.

Neopia would be a safer, faster, and less CAPTCHA-y place if everyone used a PIN on their account and used a secure password so that breaking into old accounts to plunder them wasn't so easy.
