I'm happy to announce that our Removing Neopets Ads guide has been given a much-needed update! We've given new recommendations based on what we believe to be the best ad-block extensions available for your web browser.

If you haven't thought about your ad-block lately, we'd recommend giving our guide a read through to make sure you're up to date:

I switched...gosh, maybe it's been a year already? After hearing people praise UBO so much, I decided to try it for myself and like it a lot better! <3

What happened to Adblock?
apophis324, July 13, 2020 2:48 AM NST
It's an annoying dilemma.. On one hand there's Neopets that absolutely can't run while ads are active, slowing down and just ads everywhere.. on the other hand there's Neopets that absolutely can't run without its ads, as money needs to come from somewhere and we don't all buy NCs...
Sorry TNT, but I'd rather play than pay...

@maaar_lima I think adblock started inserting their own ads into webpages and making money off its users, basically resulting in only a marginally more adfree and safer browsing than without any sort of adblock

oh btw, if you want an even better and private surfing experience, also consider installing Privacy Badger (available on most browsers)

and if you're using firefox (the best browser) then also Facebook Container to stop facebook from tracking you across the entire internet bc they spit in the face of privacy :/

This website seems to have had some tweaks done to it. Which is weird because I thought there was a complete redesign in the works (That was teased about a year ago)

@catsrnice: We're making some changes under the hood that require us to update some old parts too! (Or else there would have been no news updates for awhile. )

It's only slightly amusing that a site supposedly (falsely) geared towards kids ends up with ads that can end up showing adult content based on seemingly random connections and that an adblock is a necessary tool to even play...

Thanks, Dave! About the scripts (filters) that were originally recommended to use on AdBlock Plus to shrink the size of the top site bar, for example, are those still able to be used with uBlock Origin?
dave - JN Staff, July 13, 2020 1:18 PM NST
@zinkro: Yes, you can just right click on any element (like the top page banner background) and select "Block Element" to manually block something like that. You'll want to look for something like "###ban" as the rule. I'll see that that is added to our guide at some point.
dave - JN Staff, July 13, 2020 1:18 PM NST
@nobody: I wouldn't say this is at all about adult-themed ads. People just don't like ads (for good reason). You should be able to play without any ads, regardless of the ad content.
mamsmelk_jr, July 13, 2020 2:02 PM NST
I would not mind seeing ads as it supports the site, but seeing as it's not playable with the ads, I'm blocking them. AdBlock still works fine for me but I might consider switching if it stops being enough.

@apophis324 - That’s why Neopets should offer “optional” ads that offer rewards for voluntarily watching them!

If you know that it’s going to give you a reward then you’re more inclined to allow the service.

Let’s say every 30 second ad gives Neopets a certain amount of money; In return for the voluntary ad, one would get free Neocash!

1. Neopets would be making a profit, 2. We’d be getting free Neocash, (which is already difficult to acquire as a lot of the Neopets Fanbase are working class people who don’t want to spend physical money on virtual items), and 3. The fact that it’s optional and rewarding gives it a more satisfying aspect similar to the old wheel of adverts game!

I had an ad blocker on my laptop… And then I had my computer fixed recently. The ad blocker on my computer disappeared and I have not re-downloaded it since. Neopets needs that money so I brave the annoying ads. But I still feel that there should be a rewarding option.

@phoebe - It’s not just Facebook! ALL of Google spits in the face of privacy!

If you want a REALLY beneficial search engine, then I greatly recommend “Ecosia!”

Ecosia plants a tree with every 45 searches that you do from the money that they get from the ads that they show!

And apparently, they clear their data after about a week anyway. Nice and private! 😎👍

now if only I could get rid of the empty space on the right sideof the free jelly page
