After Neopets revamped the whole site on April 26, 2007, we were given the gift of site themes! For those of you who don't know, they replaced the old sidebars.
Site themes are typically obtained through participating in site events or at particular times of the year. You can see how many site themes a user has by looking at their user lookup in the "Collections" module. (It's right below the stamp count.)
Some site themes are have "special effects." For example, the Happy Birthday site theme increases the rate of random events. Some site themes are rumoured to have special effects, such as the Valentine's Day site theme, but those effects have never been provable or confirmed by TNT.
Changing Your Theme
You may change your site theme on the Site Preferences page. There are several default themes to choose from, along with ones that you have unlocked.
Below is a list of the various types of notifications you might receive and the associated icons in the default site theme. The icons in other themes will typically follow the same style.
You have received a Neomail.
You have been accepted as a NeoFriend!
You have received a request to be NeoFriended.
Your opponent has accepted your Battle Challenge.
You have been challenged by another user in the Battledome!
You have received a warning from Neopets!
You have received an item!
Your offer on a trade has been accepted OR This trade has been cancelled by the owner.
Your offer on a trade has been rejected.
Your trade has been offered on by another user.
One of the offers on one of your trades has been withdrawn.
Somebody has offered a pet for you to adopt OR the person you offered your pet to has accepted/rejected the pet. (This icon is the same in every theme.)
Below is a full listing of the available themes and their previews. We've sorted them into groups of Active themes (currently obtainable), Retired themes (typically from one time events), and Default themes (always available without unlocking).
These themes are no longer obtainable if you were not around for their initial release. They are typically tied to one time site events.
