DN

DN

['diːɛn] - adjective

Abbreviation for the phrase "Decently Named". Refers to a pet name that, while not immediately attractive or intuitively spelt, is not enough of a random jumble to qualify as a bad name. Words strung together with underscores, or which are spelt in ways that make it hard to know how to pronounce them, often fall into this category.

Example Usage:

"This pet is only DN, but she's a Draik now. I expect people to be interested in adopting her."

Category: Trading and Adoption

Foster

Foster

(1) To take a Neopet from the Neopian Pound (the shelter for homeless pets) and paint, train and/or otherwise make him or her more attractive before trying to find a player who would like to adopt him or her permanently.

Penny Trade

Penny Trade

['pɛniː tɹɛɪd] - verb

To trade a fairly common Neopet for a very slightly rarer pet that you have no intention of keeping, then immediately try to repeat the process with that pet. The eventual goal is to obtain a very rare Neopet by means of a long string of trades. It is considered very bad etiquette not to be upfront about doing this.

Example Usage:

"My friend is trying to penny trade his way to a Draik."

Category: Trading and Adoption

Permie

Permie

['pɜːmiː] - noun

Abbreviation of "permanent pet"; a pet who will remain with his or her current owner for the foreseeable future, rather than being given to someone else or sent to the Pound.

Category: Trading and Adoption

Example Usage:

(1) "Look at the lovely Lenny I found in the Pound! I couldn't resist taking her home with me."
(2) "My cousin gave me her Aisha when she quit, because she didn't want to pound him."

Category: Trading and Adoption

Pound Transfer

Pound Transfer

[paʊnd 'tɹænsfɜː] - verb

To place a Neopet in the Pound (the shelter for homeless pets) with the expectation that s/he will immediately be picked up by a specific user. This is risky, due to the fact that pets in the Pound can be adopted by anyone at any time.

RN

RN

[aːɹɛn] - adjective

Abbreviation for the phrase "Real Name". Refers to a pet name that is also used as a name for humans in the real world. It's generally understood that a name has to be widespread in real life in order to be an RN-- in other words, if you happen to name your newborn daughter Peppersqueaks, that doesn't mean you can claim it to be RN on Neopets. Examples might include "Jasmine", "Amadeus" or "Fabio".

Example Usage:

"I was wondering, does 'Paskal' count as RN? I normally see it with a C, but I wasn't sure..."

Category: Trading and Adoption

RW

[aː'dʌbəljuː] - adjective

Abbreviation of the phrase "Real Word". Refers to a pet name that, while not a name that's commonly used for humans, is a correctly spelt word that you might find in a dictionary on Earth (not necessarily in English, though it's the most common language used). Examples might be "Gatherings", "Fiefdom" or "Spangled".

Example Usage:

"What do you mean, that name isn't RW? Look, I'll show you the dictionary definition..."

Category: Trading and Adoption

Stuck

Stuck

[stʌk] - adjective

In the Pound (the shelter for homeless pets), but unable to be viewed when refreshing the "Adopt" page there. No-one knows why this happens to some pets, but it's thought to have something to do with the characters in their names.

Example Usage:

"If I hadn't mistyped the name I was searching for in the Pound, I never would have found this stuck pet!"

Category: Trading and Adoption

Transfer

Transfer

['tɹænsfɜː] - verb, noun

(1) To send a Neopet to another player, using the system found behind the central door of the Neopian Pound.
(2) The act of sending a Neopet to another user in this way.
(3) The ability to send or receive a pet using the transfer system. Players are limited in the number of pet transfers they can start or accept per month (the number varies based on account age). A player who can send a maximum of three pets to others, and has already sent two this month, is said to have one transfer left.

Example Usage:

(1) "My daughter's quitting Neopets, so she decided to transfer her Hissi to me."
(2) "I wish he would hurry up and accept the transfer. It's been more than a day since I sent the pet!"

Example Usage:

"I've been looking for a WN Faerie pet to add to my family."
