  • June 25, 2012, 1:53 am NST - And so the 7th Altador Cup comes to a close... or does it? Yes and no. Meridell and Mystery Island are now tied for 2nd position, and as per the rules page should be playing a tiebreaker round to decide the podium positions. As for when this tiebreaker will actually begin, well that's anyone's guess. Regardless, at this stage we know that Kreludor have taken the Cup - go Kreludor!

    Alabriss Bracket
Meridell cemented their position at the top of this bracket with a late sweep against Faerieland yesterday. Virtupets came close to the same against Moltara, but Moltara managed to hold on to a Shootout Showdown win. Draws were a major feature of the Haunted Woods/Terror Mountain game, in both Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger. The remaining two games however went in favour of the Haunted Woods.

    Minitheus Bracket
Shenkuu managed a late showing against Kiko Lake, with wins in all games aside from Make Some Noise, which ended in a draw. A similar story from Mystery Island, who took three wins against Roo Island. The Rooligans managed to fight back though, securing a Slushie Slinger win. Mirroring the other two matches, the Lost Desert also managed three wins. Brightvale took the remaining game, Make Some Noise.

    Vaeolus Bracket
Kreludor finished off their winning season with a sweep against Altador, while Maraqua managed the same against Tyrannia. The Krawk Island/Darigan Citadel match was more contested, with Krawk Island taking wins in Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger while Darigan took the Shootout Showdown and Make Some Noise wins.

    Meepit Bracket
Turns out, we were adequately prepared.
  • June 24, 2012, 5:41 am NST - Almost done!

    Alabriss Bracket
First match up is between Moltara and Faerieland. Moltara took the win in Yooyuball, but the Faeries forced them into a draw in Slushie Slinger as they took the win in both Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown. The Haunted Woods managed not to get swept by Meridell, by forcing the Knights into a draw in Make Some Noise. Finally, Virtupets bested Terror Mountain with wins in Yooyuball and Make Some Noise. Terror Mountain ended up with a win in Shootout Showdown, and a draw in Slushie Slinger.

    Minitheus Bracket
Roo Island came away with an overall win today when they bested Shenkuu. The teams tied in both Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger, but Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown went to Roo Island. Brightvale bested Kiko Lake this round, as they took Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown, leaving Kiko Lake to win in Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise. Mystery Island was able to subdue the Lost Desert team, by winning in both Yooyuball and Make Some Noise. The Lost Desert was left with only a draw in Slushie Slinger and a win in Shootout Showdown.

    Vaeolus Bracket
Altador continued to fight against the powerhouses it was placed with when it came to Maraqua. They were able to secure a win in Slushie Slinger, but that was it, as Maraqua was able to take them down in every other game. Krawk Island fared well against Tyrannia, who just came off of a win in Yooyuball against Kreludor, by almost sweeping the prehistoric team. Tyrannia survived only by a draw in Make Some Noise. Our last match up of the day was between Kreludor and Darigan Citadel. It is obvious who is going to win this year, as Kreludor swept Darigan Citadel.

    Meepit Bracket
    meh.
  • June 23, 2012, 12:42 am NST - We've reached the penultimate day of the Altador Cup and the results for Day Four are in!

    Alabriss Bracket
Our first match of the day showed Terror Mountain triumphing over Faerieland by winning three of the games, though a draw was seen in Shootout Showdown -- an area on which the Faeries appear to have been improving. Meanwhile, Moltara claimed a victory in Yooyuball against the Haunted Woods, but they were not as fortunate in the side games department. Luck wasn't on Virtupets's side when they faced Meridell; the kingdom team continued their streak of sweeps by winning in all four games.

    Minitheus Bracket
Clear winners could be seen in all three Minitheus matches, though none of them were sweeps. Roo Island was the clear winner in the Roo Island/Brightvale match, though Shootout Showdown went to Brightvale. Lost Desert won in both Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger, but Team Shenkuu may or may not have screamed their hearts out and took a win in Make Some Noise. The two teams were evenly matched in Shootout Showdown. Mystery Island won in Yooyuball, Slushie Slinger, and Make Some Noise, but the Kikos did not let them run away with a sweep; Shootout Showdown ended in a draw.

    Vaeolus Bracket
Kreludor saw their first loss in Yooyuball today, a blow caused by Tyrannia; the lunar team had previously seen a draw, but apart from that their Yooyuball record was flawless. Meanwhile, Altador saw their second Yooyuball win today, this time against a historically stronger team than Moltara: Krawk Island. The last game of the day ended in a sweep, with Darigan Citadel blowing Maraqua out of the water.

    Meepit Bracket
I'm starting to suspect that all the players in the Cup are secretly Kikos Meepits.

  • June 22, 2012, 1:34 am NST - Only three days of live play left now as the Cup reaches the climax!

    Alabriss Bracket
Another sweep for Meridell started off the results in this bracket, this time against Faerieland. It seems unlikely that Meridell will be knocked for their position at the top of this bracket - meaning we may have a tie for 2nd place at the end of Sunday (which should mean 1 more day of play on Monday). Meanwhile Terror Mountain missed out on a near sweep against Moltara. They took all games but Make Some Noise, which ended in a draw. Elsewhere, Virtupets gained the edge against the Haunted Woods with wins in Yooyuball and Make Some Noise. The Haunted Woods managed a Shootout Showdown win, and forced a draw in Slushie Slinger.

    Minitheus Bracket
The team Meridell is likely to face in the tie breaker, Mystery Island, also managed a sweep yesterday. This time it was against Brightvale. Kiko Lake, after their strong start to the season, faltered somewhat against Shenkuu, only managing a win in Make Some Noise while Shenkuu took the remaining three games. The Roo Island/Lost Desert match tipped in favour of Roo Island, with wins in Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise. The Lost Desert drew Shootout Showdown, while winning Yooyuball outright.

    Vaeolus Bracket
In the final bracket, Kreludor was the only bracket leading team not to manage a full sweep today. They lost Make Some Noise to Maraqua, but did manage to take all remaining games. The sweep of this bracket instead belonged to the Darigan Citadel, taking ths win from Krawk Island. Finally, Tyrannia managed a near sweep against Altador, only losing the Slushie Slinger match.

    Meepit Bracket
Not long until the Meepit appears on the podium O_o

  • June 21, 2012, 12:56 am NST - Welcome back Altador Cup enthusiast for the results of Day 2 of this round. As the cup is nearing the end more interesting results are appearing.

    Alabriss Bracket
Faerieland left their best game for the end of the cup it seems. The faeries managed to force a draw in Yooyuball yesterday and took home a win in Shootout Showdown, while opposing team Haunted Woods won the other two side games. Similar situation over at the Terror Mountain vs. Virtupets match, where Virtupets stole the win in Yooyuball and got a draw in Make Some Noise, the other two side games went to Terror Mountain. Last in this bracket we see a not so surprising sweep. Moltara suffered a total loss by the hands of current second place team Meridell.

    Minitheus Bracket
Shenkuu and Brightvale proved to be equal in strength yesterday, both teams going home with two wins. Shenkuu took Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger while Brightvale took Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown. Lost Desert fought hard yesterday but only managed a draw in Shootout Showdown against high scorer Mystery Island who took the wins in all of the other games. Kiko Lake just didn't have their best game yesterday and suffered a sweep from
    neighboring land's team Roo Island.

    Vaeolus Bracket
Yesterdays match-ups proved to be very unlucky for some with all of the matches ending in sweeps. Starting from the top, Tyrannia suffered an utter defeat from Darigan Citadel yesterday, who want to prove that their place is on the top. Much the same result over at the Altador vs. Maraqua match where despite Altador's best efforts Maraqua took the game with a full four wins. Lastly Kreludor finished off Krawk Island with yet another complete victory in this bracket.

    Meepit Bracket
I'm gonna love it and squeeze it and call it George <3
  • June 20, 2012, 4:49 am NST - So passes the first day of new brackets, and as always a small shufflage has occurred. Kreludor and Mystery Island, first and equal second respectively and leaders for much of the tournament, remain destined never to play each other... oh, what might have been!

    Alabriss Bracket
In the first bracket (alphabetically speaking, of course), Faerieland enjoyed a rare day of relative success with a win over Virtupets in Shootout Showdown and a draw in Slushie Slinger, while the robot renegades took wins in the other two games. Elsewhere, Meridell continued their surprising dominance with a sweep of underperformers Terror Mountain. In a surprise result, Moltara managed to force a Yooyuball draw with the Haunted Woods, although they suffered the ignominy of a side sweep.

    Minitheus Bracket
Tournament powerhouse Mystery Island, currently sitting pretty in equal second place, had a mildly shocking loss to Shenkuu in Shootout Showdown - but this didn't stop the islanders from taking wins in the other three games. The Lost Desert won three from four against Kiko Lake, ceding Slushie Slinger to the bobblers in brown and green. In the last match of the bracket, Roo Island snatched defeat from the jaws of victory against Brightvale, sweeping the side games but losing Yooyuball.

    Vaeolus Bracket
Not even Tyrannia could stop the mighty Kreludor from once again asserting their dominance over this year's cup, with the moonmen enjoying yet another sweep. Meanwhile, Maraqua and Krawk Island fought out a bitterly-contested draw, with Maraqua winning Slushie Slinger, Krawk Island taking Make Some Noise, and the other two games ending in draws. Finally, Darigan Citadel continued Altador's miserable form with a clean sweep of the tournament hosts.

    Meepit Bracket
No further comment at this stage.
  • June 19, 2012, 6:28 am NST - The endings of another round means we are one step closer to the end, and with that upsets are bound to happen. Meridell is now at the top with Kreludor and Mystery Island, for its effort at keeping Mystery Island behind it in the last bracket. The points varied this round, with first place finishers gaining 22 points and last place teams gaining 7 points. While it is obvious it isn't anyone's game anymore, an upset could still happen.

    Alabriss Bracket
Obvious wins in this bracket in the last round. Mystery Island swept Faerieland, leaving them without a chance of gaining placement in the bracket. Meridell almost did the same thing to Terror Mountain, but was forced into a draw in Slushie Slinger.
Kiko Lake didn't fare well against Krawk Island as their only win was Slushie Slinger. In the end Meridell was able to win the entire bracket and Faerieland came in last.

    Minitheus Bracket
The first match-up was between Tyrannia and Altador. The Tyrannians struck down Altador in all but Shootout Showdown, and were forced into a draw in Slushie Slinger. Virtupets and Brightvale went toe to toe in the next match-up, and Virtupets came out the winner by taking the wins in Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger. Brightvale, in the end, was able to cling to 2 wins in Shootout Showdown and Make Some Noise. The final match-up of the bracket was between Moltara and the Lost Desert. The Lost Desert team was close to a full sweep but was stopped at the final game, Shootout Showdown, where Moltara was able to get in one win against them. The Lost Desert won the bracket, while Altador continued to be in last place.

    Vaeolus Bracket
Seems to be that in the last bracket, teams were saved only by a draw in each match-up. The first match up was Darigan Citadel versus Shenkuu. Shenkuu did all it could but the only result that was in its favor was a draw in Slushie Slinger. The same results occurred in the next match-up between Maraqua and the Haunted Woods. The Haunted Woods did all it could, but Maraqua was just too strong for them. The last match-up was between Kreludor and Roo Island. Roo Island did all it could, but its once powerhouse status was unable to shine again as they barely escaped a sweep with a draw in Make Some Noise. Kreludor won the bracket, which continued their perfect 1st place streak, and Shenkuu occupied the last place position.

  • June 18, 2012, 12:49 am NST - Another day has come and gone, and we're here again with another day of commentary!

    Alabriss Bracket
Though Krawk Island was the evident winner in their match with Terror Mountain, draws were seen in both Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown. In the second match, three of the games went to the Kikos, but Faerieland dodged a sweep by stealing Shootout Showdown. Mystery Island and Meridell both took two games each, with Yooyuball and Make Some Noise going to the island team, and Slushie Slinger and Shootout Showdown going to Meridell.

    Minitheus Bracket
A draw in Yooyuball started off the Minitheus Bracket; however, Lost Desert prevailed gainst Virtupets in all three side games. Brightvale won three of their games against Altador; though Brightvale, not exactly known for their slushie-slinging skills, lost in Slushie Slinger. Tyrannia won in both Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger, but Moltara forced a draw in Make Some Noise and took Shootout Showdown for themselves.

    Vaeolus Bracket
The only sweep of the day was seen in the Vaeolus Bracket, with Kreludor taking four wins against Maraqua. The Roo Island/Shenkuu match tipped in favour of the former team, with Roo Island taking wins in Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise; Shenkuu took a win in the remaining side game, and they proved to be evenly matched in Yooyuball. Darigan Citadel was the clear winner in their match, taking wins in Yooyuball, Slushie Slinger, and Shootout Showdown; the Haunted Woods fought back by snagging Make Some Noise.

    Meepit Bracket
    O_o'
  • June 17, 2012, 1:34 am NST - Another day of results proves more than ever that daily matches no longer decide standings. Still, it's interesting to see what happens when teams go up against each other.

    Alabriss Bracket
A sweep started off the results in this bracket, Terror Mountain, unsurprisingly, managing a complete victory over Faerieland. The remaining two matches in the bracket were near sweeps, just a single game preventing a team from taking all the wins. Meridell managed to triumph against Kiko Lake with wins in all games but Slushie Slinger, which Kiko Lake took. Mystery Island continued their rise to power with three wins against Krawk Island. KI fought back with a win in Shootout Showdown, however.

    Minitheus Bracket
Two sweeps dominated the results in this bracket. Tyrannia managed a full victory over Virtupets, while Brightvale did the same to Moltara. The Lost Desert meanwhile faced Altador, and though they managed three wins, the desert team didn't quite manage a sweep. Altador was able to take the Make Some Noise win for themselves.

    Vaeolus Bracket
Another sweep started off the final bracket, this time Roo Island over the Haunted Woods. The remaining two matches followed the pattern of the day, with one match depriving a team of a sweep. Maraqua managed three wins against Shenkuu, but lost the Slushie Slinger match. Kreludor meanwhile managed to take wins in all side games, while drawing Yooyuball with the Darigan Citadel.

    Meepit Bracket
I wonder if there'll be a Feepit bracket...

Reminder: There is a bonus on Make Some Noise today, making it worth extra points for your team.
  • June 16, 2012, 1:08 am NST - Day 3 of Round 3 has now finished and we're back with yet another result commentary for you. Let's looks at the scores.

    Alabriss Bracket
Faerieland just can't seem to stay away from the end of the score board. The faerie team suffered yet another sweep from leading team Mystery Island this time. Terror Mountain manages to avoid a sweep by forcing a draw on Kiko Lake in Shootout Showdown, all the other games going to the Kikos. Meridell went against Krawk Island yesterday. Meridell took home wins in Yooyuball and Make Some Noise, Krawk Island won in Slushie Slinger and Shootout Showdown ended in a draw.

    Minitheus Bracket
In this bracket Moltara shows a good day of results nearly sweeping Altador, who fight back taking the all important win in Yooyuball. The Lost Desert against Tryannia match didn't show such clear results. Lost Desert won in two of the side games, Tyrannia stealing the win in Slushie Slinger and Yooyuball ending in a draw. Pretty much the same results in the Virtupets vs. Brightvale match. Virtupets won the match in Yooyuball, Brightvale won in two of the side games, but didn't manage to get Slushie Slinger which ended in a draw.

    Vaeolus Bracket
Sweeps dominated this bracket yesterday with both top teams getting four wins in their matches. Darigan Citadel swept Shenkuu, meanwhile Kreludor took all the wins in the match against Haunted Woods. Maraqua on the other hand manages to avoid being swept with a win in Yooyuball, all of the side games going to opposing team Roo Island.

    Meepit Bracket
I have all my Neopoints bet on this bracket!

  • June 15, 2012, 1:30 am NST - Another day of results await us as the third round reaches its half way point today.

    Alabriss Bracket
The results of this bracket were dominated by sweeps yesterday. Meridell managed, somewhat unsurprisingly, to sweep Faerieland. Krawk Island meanwhile swept Terror Mountain. The bracket's one remaining match, between Mystery Island and Kiko Lake, also almost ended in a sweep. Mystery Island managed wins in Yooyuball, Make Some Noise, and Shootout Showdown, whilst Kiko Lake pulled back a win in Slushie Slinger.

    Minitheus Bracket
Draws seemed a more prominent feature of this bracket yesterday. Tyrannia narrowly missed out on a sweep against Moltara, taking wins in all games bar Shootout Showdown, which the two teams drew. A mixed bag of results between Virtupets and Altador, with Virtupets taking wins in Yooyuball and Make Some Noise, while Altador took a Slushie Slinger win and a draw in Shootout Showdown. Finally, Brightvale and the Lost Desert seemed more evenly matched, with two draws in Yooyuball and Make Some Noise. In the other games, Brightvale took Shootout Showdown, while the Lost Desert evened the score with Slushie Slinger.

    Vaeolus Bracket
Kreludor continued their good results with a sweep against Maraqua in this bracket. Shenkuu almost managed the same against the Haunted Woods, taking wins in all the side games. The Haunted Woods managed to fight back though, drawing Yooyuball. Finally, the scales tipped slightly in favour of the Darigan Citadel in their match against Roo Island with wins in Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown. Roo Island meanwhile managed to draw Slushie Slinger and take an outright win in Make Some Noise.

    Meepit Bracket
    I wonder if he's reached All-Star yet...
  • June 14, 2012, 12:33 am NST - First day into the new bracket and we already have some interesting results! Let's break it down shall we?

    Alabriss Bracket
First match up was Krawk Island against Faerieland; sadly the faeries were no match for the pirates and were swept again. Mystery Island continued its stampede, this time against Terror Mountain, and could only be stopped with a draw in Shootout Showdown. Kiko Lake fought bravely against Meridell, but ultimately the day went to Meridell, as Kiko Lake was only able to avoid a sweep with draws in Slushie Slinger and Shootout Showdown.

    Minitheus Bracket
Surprise came from all around when Altador, the team who hadn't won a single non-finals Yooyuball game in two seasons, managed to score a draw against the Lost Desert! Unfortunately that was all they were able to do, so the rest of the scores showed the Lost Desert rolling in the green. Virtupets was close to stopping out the flames in Moltara, only to be stopped in Shootout Showdown, where Moltara showed that it might be beaten but it isn't out of the game yet. Two equally matched teams, Brightvale and Tyrannia, faced off again today - but were not able to beat the other into submission. Tyrannia took the win in its speciality, Slushie Slinger, and Brightvale took the win in Make Some Noise. Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown, however, ended in a draw.

    Vaeolus Bracket
In a bracket full of powerhouses, past and present, the results are simple. Two sweeps featured in the results today; Kreludor took care of Shenkuu and Roo Island managed to sweep Haunted Woods. The only non-sweep in the bracket was between Maraqua and Darigan Citadel. Team Maraqua were not able to subdue the Citadel and managed only to win in Make Some Noise.

    Meepit Bracket
    *huggles and loves*
  • June 13, 2012, 12:57 am NST - The Altador Cup has reached its midway point, and we're back with another exciting day of results! Points have been awarded too; Mystery Island and Kreludor are still tied for first with 30 points each, with Darigan Citadel trailing not too far behind with 27. This time, 17 points (instead of 13) were awarded for 1st position teams while the teams at the bottom claimed 4.

    Alabriss Bracket
None of the results in the Alabriss brackets were exactly surprising. Two sweeps were seen: Kreludor beat Altador and Darigan Citadel beat Virtupets, who by now is certainly suffering from some variant of the "Winner's Curse". Brightvale won in the two Yooyuball-based games, but Make Some Noise went to the Haunted Woods and they drew in Slushie Slinger.

    Minitheus Bracket
Moltara's fire was extinguished by Maraqua, who blew them out of the water... ahem. Meanwhile, Faerieland lost to Tyrannia in three of the games, but the Faeries fought back and forced a draw in Shootout Showdown, breaking a nine-day streak of being swept. Most surprisingly, though, Kiko Lake won all three side games against Mystery Island, a team that had not lost in any of the side games since their match with Lost Desert.

    Vaeolus Bracket
Krawk Island broke Meridell's perfect record this round by making a draw in Shootout Showdown, though Meridell's skill is by no means waning; they claimed wins in all the other games. On the other side of the stadium, Lost Desert beat Terror Mountain in two of the four games, but Terror Mountain not so surprisingly triumphed in Shootout Showdown -- Make Some Noise ended in a draw. Two draws were seen in the Shenkuu/Roo Island match, but both teams took one game for themselves.

    Meepit Bracket
    What are you talking about?

The brackets have once again been shuffled, this time for the third round.

Reminder: Yooyuball is worth extra points today.
  • June 12, 2012, 1:52 am NST - As we come to the close of the second round, we have another day's results to recap - it's clear at this stage of the Cup that these daily matches no longer reflect overall standings, but that's a new format for you. Remember to send TNT feedback about it :P

    Alabriss Bracket
A mixed bag of results in this bracket, Haunted Woods managed to take an overall win against Altador with wins in Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown, but Altador managed to fight back and forced draws in Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise. The results of the Virtupets/Brightvale match tipped in favour of Brightvale win Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown wins, while Virtupets took Make Some Noise whilst forcing a draw in Slushie Slinger. Kreludor had better luck against the Darigan Citadel, with wins in both Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger, while Darigan fought back with a Shootout Showdown win and a draw in Make Some Noise.

    Minitheus Bracket
A sweep for Moltara against Faerieland dominated the results in this bracket. However, Kiko Lake seemed to encounter a small stumbling block in their match against Maraqua, with the latter taking the Yooyuball win and a draw in Make Some Noise. Kiko Lake however managed to take the two remaining games. Tyrannia managed a fight back against strong contender Mystery Island in the remaining match. A win for Tyrannia in Yooyuball and a draw in Slushie Slinger was enough to counter Mystery Island's two wins in Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown.

    Vaeolus Bracket
In the final bracket there was one more sweep, this time Meridell over the Lost Desert. Krawk Island only narrowly missed out on a similar sweep against Roo Island, losing their Make Some Noise match. Finally, the Shenkuu/Terror Mountain match was decidedly mixed. Draws ruled the day in both Yooyuball and Make Some Noise, while the teams split the remaining games one each - Shenkuu taking Slushie Slinger, and Terror Mountain taking Shootout Showdown.

    Meepit Bracket
    Perhaps we should begin preparing...
  • June 11, 2012, 1:03 am NST - Welcome back to another day of Altador Cup excitement! Enough of the small talk, here are the results:

    Alabriss Bracket
Round 2 seems to be bringing better luck for Altador who managed to take another win. While Virtupets took wins in all the other games, Altador kept them from the perfect score by taking Slushie Slinger. Haunted Woods didn't share Altador's good luck and got swept by Darigan Citadel. Last in this bracket, Kreludor gains two wins in this match in Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger against Brightvale, who forces draws in the other two games with the top competitor.

    Minitheus Bracket
Steam-powered Moltara kept Round 1 top team Mystery Island from a sweep by getting a draw in Slushie Slinger. Faerieland however seems to be lacking steam. The faeries handed the match over to Kiko Lake, with a score of four wins for the Kikos. The Maraqua Tyrannia match showed close results. Tyrannia won in Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger while Maraqua fought back and took wins in the other two side games.

    Vaeolus Bracket
The good old glory days seem to be long gone for Shenkuu who suffered yet another sweep, this time at the hands of team Meridell. Roo Island didn't give up so easily and pulled off two draws in Yooyuball and Make Some Noise, while Lost Desert took the wins in Slushie Slinger and Shootout Showdown. Krawk Island faced Terror Mountain this time. The match resulted in two wins for Krawk Island in Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger, a win for Terror Mountain in Make Some Noise and a draw in Shootout Showdown.

  • June 10, 2012, 12:40 am NST - Look! Gosh! Excitement! Day 3 has come and gone, and with it, a results post!

    Alabriss Bracket
Cementing their status as undeniable tournament favourites, Kreludor continued their stunning run with a sweep of defending premiers Virtupets, who, it must be said, aren't exactly having a great year. Elsewhere in the bracket, Altador celebrated their second win of the season, surpassing Darigan Citadel in Slushie Slinger. The Citadel, however, managed to take wins in the other three games. The Haunted Woods - Brightvale match was less conclusive, with Brightvale coming up trumps in Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown, while Haunted Woods were triumphant in Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise.

    Minitheus Bracket
The Minitheus Bracket provided clear results this time around, with Kiko Lake pulling off an admittedly less challenging sweep against Moltara. Frontrunners Mystery Island, top of their bracket in Round 1, continued their good form with wins in three games against Maraqua; the sea-dwellers managed to force a draw in Shootout Showdown. Finally, Tyrannia had a good day against Faerieland, with sweeps all around.

    Vaeolus Bracket
Sweeps were the order of the day in the Vaeolus Bracket, with the once-mighty Shenkuu the recipients of a four-from-four thrashing at the hands of Krawk Island. Meridell, currently top of the bracket, beat Roo Island in an equally convincing fashion. Lastly, Terror Mountain had one of their best results of the season, holding powerhouse Lost Desert to draws in Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown. Lost Desert, however, took wins in the other two games.

  • June 9, 2012, 6:36 am NST - Let's get straight to business shall we?

    Alabriss Bracket
Breaking News! The home team, Altador, has finally achieved its first win! Yesterday Altador faced off against Brightvale, and many believed the match up would be a repeat of the first day of the Altador Cup. In the end Altador took the win in Make Some Noise, and drew once again in Slushie Slinger. Brightvale, on the other hand, decided that those small victories for Altador was enough and took the wins in Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown. It was previous winner versus previous winner in the next match up. Virtupets and Haunted Woods battled it out, but in the end Virtupets took Yooyuball, and Haunted Woods took both Slushie Slinger and Shootout Showdown. The final game, Make Some Noise, ended in a draw. The top two teams in the Alabriss bracket faced off and the results were shocking. Kreludor took the overall victory of the day, as they beat out Darigan Citadel in every game other than Slushie Slinger, to which the result ended in a draw.

    Minitheus Bracket
Shocking results in the Minitheus bracket, ladies and gentlemen, shocking results indeed. Moltara was able to stop a full sweep from Tyrannia yesterday, taking a win in Shootout Showdown. Moltara has certainly been doing better this year, and it is unlikely that they will rest in the usual spot of last place, but it is only the beginning so who knows what will happen! More shocking news! Maraqua has been swept by Kiko Lake! Maraqua fought diligently against the swarm of kikos but was unable to subdue them in any way. Mystery Island swept Faerieland as they proved that this years team is a force to be reckoned with.

    Vaeolus Bracket
The Vaelous held two sweeps and a miss as well today. Team Lost Desert couldn't obtain a full sweep against Shenkuu, but took the over all victory. Shenkuu was only able to stop a sweep from occurring by forcing a draw in both Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown. Krawk Island showed once again that they should not be taken lightly when they swept Roo Island. The jolly islanders need to turn up their game if they want to get near the podium again this year. Our final match up today was between Meridell and Terror Mountain. The Knights took all the games in their victory over Terror Mountain. It seems that the mess ups at the beginning of the games was just that, mess ups. Watch for Meridell to move forward in the brackets.

  • June 8, 2012, 12:39 am NST - The first day of the second quarter of the Altador Cup has ended, and we're once again bringing you the daily recap.

    Alabriss Bracket
There were two sweeps and one near-sweep in the Alabriss bracket. Kreludor dominated over Haunted Woods, and Darigan Citadel did the same to Brightvale; however, Altador very narrowly dodged a sweep from Virtupets by forcing a draw in Slushie Slinger -- a small improvement from being swept in all six matches the previous round.

    Minitheus Bracket
Tyrannia's match with Kiko Lake played out very differently from their previous match against each other. This time, Tyrannia claimed wins in both Yooyuball and Make Some Noise -- not unimpressive for a team that had been swept by Kiko Lake just the day before. Meanwhile, Maraqua made another sweep against Faerieland, and Moltara -- much like what Altador did in the Alabriss bracket -- blocked a full sweep by drawing with Mystery Island in Slushie Slinger.

    Vaeolus Bracket
All three matches in the Vaeolus bracket had clear winners: Roo Island over Terror Mountain, Krawk Island over Lost Desert, and Meridell over Shenkuu. Terror Mountain's skill in Yooyuball may be slightly faltering, though, as they had managed to make a draw against Roo Island on the first day. They avoided a sweep by winning in Shootout Showdown, the game that had always been their forte. Krawk Island and Lost Desert drew in Yooyuball, but the island team claimed wins in all three side games. Lastly, Meridell made a clean sweep against Shenkuu.

    Meepit Bracket
    What now?

Reminder: Slushie Slinger has a bonus on it today, making it worth extra points for your team.
  • June 7, 2012, 1:38 am NST - The results of the first round are finally in! Points have been awarded based on position in each bracket (13 points for 1st position down to 1 point for 6th position). This means that three teams are currently tied for each position - that's likely to change in future rounds.

But let's focus on yesterday's matches. The first round has been a little odd - with all teams having seemingly random repeat matches rather than the practice round the Altador Cup Committee originally suggested. It is still unclear if this will be happening in future rounds or not - certainly seems a little unfair for those teams who draw harder opponents on the repeat days if this system remains.

    Alabriss Bracket
Meridell managed a hardly surprising full sweep against Altador yesterday, putting the home nation very firmly at the bottom of the standings. Kiko Lake managed much the same against Tyrannia, whilst in the remaining match of the bracket, Kreludor managed wins against Brightvale in Yooyuball, Slushie Slinger, and Make Some Noise. Brightvale took the Shootout Showdown win, a small improvement for the team over the sweep they suffered during the last encounter, but it was never going to be enough to deprive Kreludor their position at the top of the bracket.

    Minitheus Bracket
Mystery Island took pole position in this bracket, with a sweep over Roo Island confirming their position yesterday. The other two matches were somewhat more mixed. Draws in Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger were the main feature of the match between the Lost Desert and the Haunted Woods, but the Lost Desert took the win in both Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown. The Terror Mountain/Shenkuu match, meanwhile, tipped more in the favour of Terror Mountain than the first time the teams met in the round. Terror Mountain took Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown, games which they previously drew, while Shenkuu took Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise.

    Vaeolus Bracket
In the final bracket, two sweeps dominated the day. Firstly, Krawk Island over Moltara, and Darigan Citadel over Faerieland. Both hardly surprising results. In the bracket's repeat match, Maraqua faced Virtupets again. Maraqua took Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown, while Virtupets took Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise.

    Meepit Bracket
    O_o

The brackets have now been recalculated, although by the nature of this new system, several teams are still in the same bracket as each other (4 in Vaeolus, 3 and 2 in Minitheus, and 3 and 2 in Alabriss). Hooray for variety! :P
  • June 6, 2012, 12:59 am NST - Good morning ladies and gentlemen. It is now the end of Day 5 of Altador Cup and the results of the last match are in. As we are nearing the end of the first round things might start getting even more interesting so don't forget to come back for the end of First Round results.

    Alabriss Bracket
It just doesn't seem to be Altador's year, suffering yet another sweep, this time from Tyrannia. The performance of the team just hasn't changed from the beginning of the cup.
Kiko Lake managed to avoid a sweep by taking a win in Slushie Slinger, while opponent Kreludor took wins in Yooyuball and the other side games. Same situation with Brightvale who, although lost all of the side games, managed to draw with neighboring land Meridell in Yooyuball.

    Minitheus Bracket
Let's look at the next bracket. Mystery Island managed to continue their earlier performance by sweeping Terror Mountain this time. Roo Island nearly avoided a sweep from Lost Desert by taking a win in Make Some Noise. Next onto the Haunted Woods vs. Shenkuu match. Shenkuu took wins in two of the side games while Haunted Woods took Make Some Noise, the match ending in a draw in the main game.

    Vaeolus Bracket
On to the Vaeolus Bracket. Maraqua obtained their first full victory in this match, Faerieland getting swept by their underwater opponent. Virtupets and Moltara seem to be mimicking the Shenkuu vs. Haunted Woods match. Moltara obtained two victories in two of the side games Virtupets taking Make Some Noise and Yooyuball ending in a draw.
Darigan Citadel and Krawk Island got another chance to face off. Not much change is seen from the last match they had. Darigan Citadel manages two victories in Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown while drawing in the other two games with Krawk Island.

  • June 5, 2012, 1:13 am NST - And so we arrive at the end of Day 4 of the Altador Cup. Things are starting to firm up; not that many surprises in store, results-wise, so let's get to it!

    Alabriss Bracket
Things continue to not go Altador's way in the Alabriss Bracket, suffering a fourth successive sweep - this time at the hands of Kreludor, who now sit undefeated at the top of the table. Meridell vanquished Kiko Lake in all bar Slushie Slinger, where the brown-and-green brigade managed a solitary win. Lastly, Tyrannia and Brightvale faced off, yet each team left with two wins apiece: the prehistoric predators came up trumps in Yooyuball and Make Some Noise, while their mediaeval match took the wins in Slushie Slinger and Shootout Showdown.

    Minitheus Bracket
Onto the Minitheus Bracket now, and Mystery Island started the results off well (depending on who you ask) with a sweep against Haunted Woods. The Lost Desert, however, were denied a sweep by Terror Mountain, the latter of whom managed a win in Shootout Showdown. Over in the Shenkuu versus Roo Island match, things were not nearly so decisive. Only a win by Shenkuu in Shootout Showdown established a winner for the day, with the other three games ending in draws.

    Vaeolus Bracket
In a near echo of their last match (three days ago), Moltara dealt a comprehensive sweep to their fellow cellar-dwellers Faerieland. Darigan Citadel also had a good day, beating Virtupets in three of their four games, only losing in Make Some Noise. Maraqua frustrated Krawk Island's hopes for a good day, holding them to a draw in Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown. The Pirates took the win in the other two games, Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise.

  • June 4, 2012, 12:35 am NST - Well well ladies and gentlemen what do we have here? Another day has come and gone and the results are just as juicy as the last.

    Alabriss Bracket
The Alabriss Bracket saw the same results for each match up; Complete Sweeps. Team Meridell finally got back on their feet against Team Tyrannia, sealing an all out victory there. Team Kreludor managed a sweep over Team Brightvale also. Last but not least, Kiko Lake, who has been doing well this year so far, dealt with the Altadorians the same way everyone else did, with a sweep. This came as a shock to many as Team Altador is actually pulling together this year for their team, despite what the results might show. Maybe there is bribing afoot, and the Council members need to take a look see at these games!

    Minitheus Bracket
Things aren't so simple in the Minitheus Bracket as they were in the previous bracket. No sweeps to report in this round, but there were draws all around! The first match up between Team Mystery Island and Team Lost Desert ended with the overall win going for the islanders, taking victories in Yooyuball, and Make Some Noise; and drawing in Shootout Showdown, and a Lost Desert victory in Slushie Slinger. Roo Island also beat out its opponent, Haunted Woods, with the help of side games. Both Yooyu and Make Some Noise ended in draws, but Roo Island claimed victory in both Slushie Slinger and Shootout Showdown. Team Shenkuu was able to do the same, except Team Shenkuu took home the victories in Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise. Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown ended in draws against their opponent, Terror Mountain.

    Vaeolus Bracket
Sweeps were seen in the Vaeolus bracket today! Darigan Citadel was able to fully prevent Moltara from taking a single victory, and Krawk Island was able to keep Faerieland under its thumb and completely plunder their winnings away from them as well! The match up between Maraqua and Virtupets, however, did not go that smoothly. Both teams could not defeat the other in Yooyuball, so the side games decided the match. Maraqua takes a victory in Slushie Slinger, and right afterwards Virtupets takes command of Make Some Noise and wins. Maraqua, however, took home the win in Shootout Showdown for the day!

  • June 3, 2012, 12:52 am NST - The second day of the Cup has ended! Compared to the results of the first day, nothing really unexpected happened. However, the end of the Cup is several weeks away, so further changes to the standings are more than possible...

    Alabriss Bracket
Kiko Lake didn't fare as well against Meridell's neighbour kingdom, Brightvale, managing only a draw in Yooyuball. The former pulled wins in both Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise, but the bonus game for yesterday went to Brightvale. Tyrannia, bouncing back from yesterday's sweep, won all four games against Altador -- nothing exactly out of the ordinary as Altador is known to be a weak team. Meanwhile, Meridell is continuing their streak of misfortune, narrowly avoiding a sweep by drawing in Make Some Noise against Kreludor.

    Minitheus Bracket
Mystery Island continued to dominate its bracket, nearly sweeping Shenkuu; a draw in Slushie Slinger prevented a full sweep. Indeed, it seems that Mystery Island is rising from their fall... but only time will tell if this is going to continue. Yooyuball-wise, the Terror Mountain/Haunted Woods match ended in a draw; however, Terror Mountain claimed a win in the bonus game, and the Haunted Woods won in the rest of the side games. The Lost Desert won against Roo Island in Yooyuball, but the side games were in favour of Roo Island -- who won in all of the side games except Slushie Slinger, which was a draw.

    Vaeolus Bracket
Darigan Citadel's match against Krawk Island proved to be very similar to the former team's match against Maraqua yesterday; the two teams drew in all of the games but Make Some Noise, which went to Darigan Citadel. Maraqua and Virtupets both won three of the games against Moltara and Faerieland, respectively, and the losing teams both escaped a sweep by winning in Slushie Slinger.

    Meepit Bracket

  • June 2, 2012, 12:31 pm NST - Well, after a small delay, the results of the first day's matches are finally in. There are a couple of surprises in there, so let's get to it.

    Alabriss Bracket
The results of this bracket were dominated by two sweeps yesterday. Kreludor managed 4 wins against Tyrannia, while Brightvale did the same against Altador. Both impressive results, but hardly surprising given the previous performance of the four teams involved. What's really surprising is the results of Kiko Lake and Meridell's match. Meridell managed a win in Shootout Showdown, and a draw in Make Some Noise, but Kiko Lake fought back to claim the remaining two games. This is a serious upset... could it be that the rumours of Kiko Lake recieving All-Star support during the off season have given them the extra might needed?

    Minitheus Bracket
It was more business as usual over in this bracket. A full sweep for Mystery Island against the Haunted Woods might indicate their slump is finally over. The day slipped slightly in favour of Roo Island against Terror Mountain, with wins in Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise, and a draw in Yooyuball. Terror Mountain were however able to scrape back a Shootout Showdown win. Much the same story over in the Lost Desert/Shenkuu match, with the Lost Desert claiming a win with Yooyuball and Make Some Noise, while Shenkuu took Slushie Slinger and drew Shootout Showdown.

    Vaeolus Bracket
More strangeness in the final bracket, this time from Moltara, who managed a near sweep against Faerieland - only missing out with a draw in Slushie Slinger. The Darigan Citadel and Maraqua meanwhile proved almost equally matched, with draws in all games but Slushie Slinger, which tipped in favour of the Darigan Citadel. Finally, Krawk Island took the overall win against Virtupets, with wins in Yooyuball, Slushie Slinger, and Shootout Showdown. Virtupets fought back, forcing a draw in Make Some Noise.

    Meepit Bracket
    Err... *backs away slowly*

  • May 31, 2012, 4:34 pm NST - Last, but by no means least, we come to Krawk Island. Finishing in second position last year, Krawk Island are now in the best position to become the first repeat winners in the history of the Altador Cup.

They are, without a doubt, statistically the strongest team in the Cup. Failing a complete upset this year, they will retain that title by the end of play as well. So, it should be a done deal, right? Right?

Well, wrong. If we use that logic, Krawk Island should have won last year as well. We also shouldn't forget the example of Shenkuu, who fell to 11th after being 2nd. It isn't a shoe-in for the win the following year.

So, will Krawk Island fall apart, or be on top? I think it is unlikely that we'll see a top 4 without Krawk Island somewhere in the mix, but it would be so easy for another team to come along and perform an upset with this new system. Krawk Island can be the first repeat winner, but they must fight tooth and nail to get there.

As the games get underway tomorrow, remember that, no matter what team you belong to, you should play your hardest. In the end, your team might not win the Cup - but you'll get prizes anyway :P

  • May 31, 2012, 12:27 am NST - Our penultimate team is Brightvale, a team that, in the past, has given everyone surprises by beating the likes of Darigan Citadel in daily matches.

Despite this, they finished in 12th, the bottom of the third bracket. Let's not be downbeat about it though - it's a good result and continues a steady upwards trend for the team since their low during the AC3 of 16th.

Can Brightvale continue upwards? There's no reason why not, but from here on out the rises might be more gradual than they have been as they come up against stronger competition. Brightvale struggle in the win percentages against almost all of the teams currently ranked higher. They may have problems rising during the rounds ahead.

That said, Virtupets is a lesson in teams going from last to first. There's no real reason why Brightvale cannot mimic this performance.

Book of Ages Hub | Dr. Sloth Images
  • May 30, 2012, 3:17 am NST - Mystery Island is an odd case, and to be honest I'm not entirely sure what we'll see from them this year.

For four years, they zigzagged between second and third brackets, but then in the AC5, they fell all the way to 14th, a position they were not able to improve on last year.

So what exactly happened to the team? The dramatic fall came, really, out of nowhere. Can the team start to rebuild?

Well, for starters, they shouldn't be too worried about the competition below them. In terms of stats, they easily outclass the teams currently ranked lower. Of course, that's no reason to stop trying while facing them, but it does free them up to focus on more immediate targets.

Brightvale, the Haunted Woods, and possibly Shenkuu should all be direct targets. They've won a good chunk of matches against Brightvale before, so it's just a question of repeating history there. Even the Haunted Woods shouldn't be too much of an issue, as the islanders have won or drawn roughly 50% of their matches. Shenkuu, however, will be a road block, with only an 8% win rate against them.

Mystery Island can improve, but they need to get over this slump that they seem to have entered.

Book of Ages Hub | Dr. Sloth Images
  • May 29, 2012, 5:32 am NST - For a lot of years Maraqua has rated very highly in predictions during the preseason, but failed to translate this into wins during the Cup. Last year, they royally bucked this trend, and have a serious shot at winning this time around.

Finishing in 4th last year was hardly surprising. They'd managed a great position of 3rd after the round robin, but losses against eventual winners Virtupets and then Kreludor dropped them out of the podium.

But this is nothing to be disheartened about. Round robin performance counts for so much more than finals, this year especially so, and that is what Maraqua should focus on. Of course, they shouldn't get comfortable, as many teams will happily steal their position if Maraqua are not focused enough.

Many now assume a final conflict in the standings between Krawk Island and Maraqua, and in terms of raw stats, Krawk Island has the edge - Maraqua have lost 69% of their matches together. But Maraqua have managed to win against Krawk Island before, and they are masters at sizing up their competition and knowing exactly where to put their efforts. If Maraqua manage to make the top of the leaderboard again, they will be a serious contender for gold.

Book of Ages Hub | Dr. Sloth Images
  • May 28, 2012, 5:07 am NST - Finishing just behind Roo Island last year were Shenkuu in 10th. Unfortunately, Shenkuu has had a much less positive story over the past few years.

Dramatically falling out of the top bracket during the AC5, Shenkuu did not recover as some anticipated, finishing in 12th after the round robin - one position away from the 4th bracket.

Still, the final position was an increase on the previous year, so if Shenkuu can continue the trend, they can get back to their previous glory days in time. Certainly, their performance is nothing to be ashamed of, only struggling in win percentages against high ranking teams like Krawk Island and Kreludor.

Though, given Shenkuu was in the top bracket for so long, these figures are misleading. It remains to be seen exactly what this new Shenkuu is capable of. One thing seems clear though, traditionally Shenkuu performs better in the second round than the first, and with the Cup shortened, Shenkuu might not have the warm up time they need to play well.

Book of Ages Hub | Dr. Sloth Images
  • May 27, 2012, 2:30 am NST - Roo Island's progress, or rather lack of it, tracked the Darigan Citadel's last year, almost exactly.

Both, during the AC5, had been in the top bracket, Roo Island only narrowly missing out on a podium position to the Citadel team. Then, last year, when Darigan fell, so did Roo Island. Of course, Roo Island fell further, finishing in 9th, dropping into the third bracket. Unfortunately, this wasn't just a little dip into the third bracket - Roo Island finished the round robin in 10th. Slap bang in the middle of the bracket.

So, was it a case of new Yooyuball causing the drop? Possibly, it seems like most bigger teams suffered last year to some degree and that was the only common factor. Will they bounce back? Well, like Darigan, that depends on the look of the Cup this year, and if the boycotting members return.

If they do, Roo Island might have a shot at the Cup again. 1st might be asking a little too much, but there's no reason Roo Island can't be back on form on the podium.

  • May 26, 2012, 12:53 pm NST - They have trained, and are here to win!
  • May 26, 2012, 2:46 am NST - Staying down the bottom end of the standings, let's talk Faerieland.

Last year's team redesign following the Faerie's Ruin plot didn't seem effective, and the projected rise in standings by some from plot-a-holics joining the team as a mark of support simply did not happen. Faerieland might not be the worst team in the Cup any more, but they still bare the scars of it - finishing in exactly the same position as they did the previous year - 15th. Though, this was actually a gain in the finals, as during the round robin they finished in 16th, only one spot shy of the bottom bracket.

Faerieland really need to pick up their game if they don't want to run the risk of falling again. Make Some Noise, by far and a way their weakest game, is an obvious weak spot to patch up going into the new season.

Their main competition in this regard will be Kiko Lake, Altador, and Mystery Island. With roughly 30% win percentages against Kiko Lake and Altador, that seems like it might be possible. Mystery Island, however, might prove a stumbling block. Currently, Faerieland has only a 3% win rate against them.

A tall order, but not impossible. Faerieland can improve. They just need to up their game in the right ways.

  • May 25, 2012, 3:08 am NST - We've already covered Moltara, so let's talk about their main competition in the Cup - Altador.

Of course, Altador has firmly trounced Moltara every time they have met in the finals, so it seems unlikely that the team has much to fear from them if they keep their resolve. Of course, the team's real goal should be not placing near Moltara at all. Altador should be firmly setting their sights on climbing out of the bottom few. Faerieland and Kiko Lake should be in their sights as teams to overtake.

With two win percentages still in the single figures (Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown), that seems like it might be a tall order. But you never know until you try. Altador need to focus on clawing back wins wherever they can. As with other lower ranked teams, the policy of focusing on side games may bear fruit by scoring some points against other larger teams. Especially with the advent of this new bonus mode for games.

Getting out of the bottom six seems unlikely this year, but entering the bottom four is certainly a possibility. Altador need to focus, but they might just succeed.

  • May 24, 2012, 7:04 am NST - Viewing the Altador Cup Rules Page today in a non-English language today will reveal the updated rules for this year's Cup, including this years schedule:

    14-25 May, Pre-tournament
    25-31 May, signups
    1-6 June, First Round
    7-12 June, Second Round
    13-18 June, Third Round
    19-24 June, Fourth Round

This seems to suggest a start date of 1st June, contradicting information from the NC Access portion of the event.

In addition to confirmation of things revealed in new features, some other interesting things have been revealed:

    • The sixth day in each round is being used as a tie-breaker round. Those teams that are tied will face each other. Other teams who are not tied will face the practice team for that day.

    • Randomly during the Cup, one of the four games will go into Bonus Mode. During that, the game will award more points for your team. Neopoint rewards from the game will remain the same during Bonus Mode.

  • May 24, 2012, 5:45 am NST - So what will the new season hold for the Haunted Woods team? Former champions, the team has seen rocky standings ever since, and lacks the return to glory that other champions like the Darigan Citadel and Krawk Island have seen.

Of course, the Haunted Woods victory came in the first Cup, when a very different system was in place. It's easy to dismiss the win as not applying in the modern game, and if you take that win out of the picture, a very different team is suggested - one that looks startlingly like Team Tyrannia.

As we mentioned yesterday, Tyrannia managed to break out of the third bracket during the AC4, and after a brief blip in AC5, returned to the second bracket last year. Can the Haunted Woods, a team that historically has seen similar results, perform a similar improvement?

It's harsh, but frankly, I doubt it. The Team seems caught in a downward spiral and doesn't seem to be able to recruit the new blood needed to boost them up. Perhaps a recruitment drive for the team would be effective, but without a concerted effort from the team, we may never know.

Small hope comes with the format change this year - as mentioned in previous days, mid-range teams could potentially exploit this to their advantage if they are seeded into the right brackets. HW, a typically changeable team, is in a firm position to give upsets. This year, the Haunted Woods needs a lot of effort, and more than a little luck.

    Mystery Island:
Mystery Island's offense was once a juggernaut, considered among the most potent in all of the sport. However, their performance has diminished greatly over the years. With the retirement of center Bertie Schurtz, the addition of defender Selmon Woulf, and a change to a 2-2 formation, it seems like the start of a new era.

Altador Cup VI News and Information

  • May 23, 2012, 3:18 am NST - Team Tyrannia took many by surprise last year, finishing in 6th, climbing from a finishing of 7th before finals.

Tyrannia experienced the second bracket two years before (finishing 8th), but after falling back to 10th during the AC5 few expected them to launch upwards with such vigour.

Tyrannia, in my eyes, is the Altador Cup's true underdog. But this year, with a placing in the mid second bracket behind them, they may have a real shot at consolidating that position, or even better climbing to the top. It may seem like a far away prospect, but 4-8 tends to be relatively closely ranked during the round robin, which is essentially what the Cup now is.

Can Tyrannia compete with the likes of the Darigan Citadel, Maraqua, and Meridell though? Certainly, if the Cup was a contest only of side games, Tyrannia would win hands down. But it isn't. Yooyuball counts, and it lets them down. But it isn't a dark picture. In terms of win percentages, Tyrannia tends to win against the big teams almost as much as they lose (within around 10% against most teams). So, with a bit of luck, and indeed a lot of effort, Tyrannia might be able to push that little bit harder and get themselves over the top.

  • May 22, 2012, 3:25 am NST - Something odd happened at the bottom of the standings last year - the last five teams finished in exactly the same positions as they had the year previously. Sadly for them, Kiko Lake was one of those teams.

16th was the placing that Kiko Lake eventually settled into, bottom of the 4th bracket. Before finals, they'd managed the slightly better position of 15th during the round robin, but fell one place.

Given that the team has never performed higher than 13th, it seems unlikely they'd manage an outright win this year, but the lesson of Virtupets still applies - bottom ranked teams do not have to stay there forever. Kiko Lake can change their ways and start to climb. This year, with many teams caught off guard with a new system, it is a better time than ever.

So how should Kiko Lake go about this? Well, side games seem to have been an effective platform through which both Virtupets and Terror Mountain have launched themselves higher in the standings. With a 43% win rate in Shootout Showdown, it seems clear that the highest chances of success lies there. Going all out in Yooyuball against teams like Krawk Island or Maraqua seems like suicide, but it is possible to get real wins against larger, more successful teams, by blindsiding them with side games.

  • May 21, 2012, 3:17 am NST - The Lost Desert is something of an unknown element this year, and whilst the prospect of a comeback to 1st position seems unlikely, many will be watching them with interest.

After winning the competition during the AC5, the result of countless years in the top bracket, the Lost Desert fell victim to the winner's curse just like all before them. Oddly though, the Lost Desert fell further than any winning team in history, from 1st all the way down to 13th. That shattered Roo Island's previous record of 9th, what went wrong?

Some people might have blamed the sudden disappearance of SOTAC members from the team following the victory, but that ignores a key factor - the Lost Desert had maintained a top bracket position for two previous years without the help of SOTAC. Could it be another case like Darigan Citadel, with the new version of Yooyuball being to blame for the extra fall in the standings?

In the end, it seems highly unlikely that a team will go from 13th to 1st without something seriously strange happening in the Cup, although the new format might just give them that sort of chance. But that's not why the Lost Desert is interesting this year. Will they be back to the 4-8th range previous champions have come to occupy? That's a more interesting question. It's possible, of course, but it does seem like the Lost Desert will need a lot of rebuilding to be back on form.

  • May 20, 2012, 3:21 am NST - Picking up from yesterday's post, today we're going to focus on the Darigan Citadel. Like Meridell, they finished in the second bracket, and are one of the top picks to be moving up to 4th this coming season.

7th was Darigan's final position last year, but going into the finals they were sixth, narrowly behind Meridell at the top of the table. The thing is, though this is a fairly decent result for a team that has won the Cup before and fallen victim to the winner's curse since, Darigan finished 3rd the year before.

So why the podium fall? No doubt there were a variety of factors, and no one will ever really know the answer, but at the time a lot of Darigan supporters were blaming the new version of Yooyuball. A lot of older players claimed to be boycotting the game for the Cup, and it may have been possible that Darigan's performance suffered as a result.

So what will this year hold for Darigan? I think, frankly, that all depends on what the Cup looks like this year. If Yooyuball has seen some drastic improvements, Darigan might be back on form and into the top four. Otherwise, it might be another year in the doldrums. Either way, with so many good teams likely to be fighting it out at the top, Darigan might have their work cut out.

Book of Ages Hub | Dr. Sloth Images
  • May 19, 2012, 3:18 am NST - A team often overlooked by many people making predictions, Meridell may have a real shot at the top this year.

Last year, Meridell barely missed out on the top bracket, finishing in 5th at the end of the round robin after a close battle for 4th with Maraqua. Meridell managed to hold on to 5th position in the finals, beating off the likes of Tyrannia and the Darigan Citadel.

Given that Maraqua, who finished in 5th the previous year, were able to break into the top bracket, it seems reasonable that Meridell may be in reach of the podium this year. The 8th ranked team overall, Meridell are a solid squad that have been firm 2nd bracket members for a long time, but for a minor blip during the AC4. With Virtupets widely expected to drop out from the podium, there will be a free spot open. The question is, will Meridell be able to take it, or will the Darigan Citadel beat them?

It's an old grudge match, and the Darigan team is, on paper, stronger - but they are also temperamental. They tend to fall apart after set backs. If Meridell can be a constant challenger, they might just have a shot at the podium.

  • May 18, 2012, 5:42 am NST - Moltara are now the firm underdog of the competition. It's cruel to say, but frankly, anyone who expects them to really take gold this year is being a little silly.

Relative newcomers to the Cup, this being only their third year of participation, the team has yet to rise beyond 18th position, dead last. They took the crown of worst Yooyuball team from Faerieland and seem set to keep it for some time. They have yet to even register a single win against four teams in the Cup (The Lost Desert, Darigan Citadel, Shenkuu, and Terror Mountain - for those who are keeping track).

Now, I hear many of your shouting about now, "But the tournament structure has changed! If Moltara gets an easy line up, they could win the Cup!". That might seem like a fair point, but if you look at it in depth, that argument falls apart.

Assuming the Altador Cup Committee use true randomisation rather than their own version that ensures all teams meet each other at least once, it would, theoretically, be possible for Moltara to be repeatedly placed in brackets against the 5 other worst teams in the Cup. Taking last year's prefinals figures, those teams are Altador, Faerieland, Kiko Lake, Mystery Island, and the Lost Desert.

Now, does it seem possible that the old Moltara could manage to beat all of those teams repeatedly? Looking at the figures - no. They've yet to win against the Lost Desert, as we mentioned above, and have only won 19% of matches against Mystery Island.

This new tournament structure does not let low-ranked teams walk away with the Cup. Mid-ranked teams, perhaps, but not those at the bottom. If Moltara manages to improve during this Cup, it is because they have improved, not because of the tournament. And in that case, Moltara need our congratulations, not our complaints.

Book of Ages Hub | Dr. Sloth Images
  • May 17, 2012, 4:44 pm NST - So, if you read the new features today and are still a little confused as to the new tournament structure - we're here to help explain it a little more!

Keep in mind that all this is still subject to change, but at present the system appears that it will be as follows.

This year, the tournament is switching to a bracket system. This means that all 18 teams will be split into 3 brackets (6 teams in each). This will be done randomly, not according to team size/strength/alphabet/etc.

The Cup will no longer use a double round robin format. Instead, there will be 4 rounds of play. Each round, your team will play every other team in the same bracket once, and then play a second team twice (according to Viola, but it is unknown exactly how the team you play is determined). That's 6 days of play per round.

Each round, the brackets will be resorted so you are not playing the exact same people, and play will repeat. There are no eliminations this year.

At the end of the 4th round, the Cup will end. There are no finals this year, so the results at the end of round 4 will determine the winners. Sort of like if the Cup ended with just the double round robin results last year.

This means a total play time of 24 days over the entire Cup - less time if you were planning on spreading out your wins towards All-Star, so you might want to keep that in mind.

I hope that's explained it all a little more for you. I'm sure the Altador Cup Committee have more surprises, so keep watching!

  • May 17, 2012, 3:25 am NST - UPDATE: The release of the Altador team preview today contains an interesting hint about the nature of the Cup this year. "Trapper" Remis is quoted as saying:

"We've made a few... changes this year. Altador is ready to show our true colours. The new tournament format will help; it's more like the ancient rules we're used to."

What new format could he be talking about? Is there a change to the double round robin format coming this year? Or the return of mouse control to YYB? Only time will tell!

In the meantime, let's continue with your regularly scheduled recap.

Dropping out of the first bracket to focus on lower ranked teams from last year, and while we're on the subject of All Star freelancers - let's talk about Terror Mountain.

Last year, a number of All-Star groups were active in the AC. We've already discussed that the main SOTAC group went with Kreludor, and that the Stealth AC Group went with Virtupets, but a smaller third group decided on helping out Terror Mountain. The thing with the group that went to TM is that they weren't quite as impersonal in their choice as the other two. Does this mean that they are more likely to stay? Perhaps.

Team Terror Mountain had long been shadowing Virtupets in the standings. When Virtupets claimed dominance in Shootout Showdown upon release, Terror Mountain followed suit. Four years ago they were just one position behind Virtupets in the final standings, and like Virtupets, they have risen even since - coming from relative obscurity at the bottom of the table to a second bracket finish last year.

Unfortunately, the team sit perilously in 8th position - a rank they held after the round robin closed, and which they failed to capitalise on in the finals. A drop of just one position would put them into an entirely different bracket, somewhere that the team really doesn't want to go.

So can the team keep rising? I wouldn't put it past them, but with so many big teams on strong form, Terror Mountain might find themselves pushed down by the sheer weight of competition. This year, holding on to second tier would be a solid achievement, and a modest goal no team should be ashamed of.

  • May 16, 2012, 2:56 am NST -

Yesterday we talked about Virtupets, and today we'll focus on Kreludor. Last year, many people were tipping Team Kreludor as the eventual winners, yet they finished in third - so what went wrong?

The answer, quite plainly, is finals.

Kreludor was at the head of the pack in 1st position at the conclusion of the round robin. In the end, one tiny little loss was what cost them the cup - against Krawk Island. On paper, Kreludor should have won - to date they hold a 55% win rate against the Krawk Island team. Even during that year's round robin, they had a near flawless win record against them, only one Yooyuball loss preventing them from claiming a double streak. Kreludor should have won that match. They should have been in the final two.

But they weren't. Kreludor choked in the finals, and it's a startling pattern. The previous year (AC5), they dropped from 1st to 2nd in a match against the Lost Desert. The year before that, Kreludor were again 1st, only to fall to 4th with losses against Shenkuu and the Lost Desert. In the AC3, though they weren't in the top bracket, they fell from 5th to 6th. Kreludor, for some reason, seems to have real difficulty in finals situations. Even having the main body of SOTAC on their team last year didn't overcome this.

Can this be Kreludor's year? The answer, of course, is the same as it has been for the last three years. The round robin should not be an issue - but final performance must be worked on. If they can pull it out of the bag at long last, Kreludor might just triumph.

  • May 15, 2012, 3:16 am NST - It's that time of year again - the Altador Cup is just around the corner! This will be the seventh year that the Cup has rolled around, and it's just as competitive as ever. If you're still having difficulty picking your team, then no fear! We'll be giving a recap of each team over the next few days to help you out.

Let's start with last year's winners - Team Virtupets.

Virtupets proved last year that the days of the obvious powerhouses ruling the roost are well and truly over - in the run up to the AC6, few outside of the team were predicting they would end up in the top tier, let alone win the entire thing.

This may have been partly because of the team's chequered history - Virtupets hit rock bottom during the AC2, finishing in last place. But since then, the team has picked itself up and hasn't looked back, managing finishes of 14th, 12th, 6th, and then last year's victory.

Of course, there is a great deal of debate as to why this happened. There's no doubt that Virtupets were on the rise by themselves, but last year, they had help from a group of All-Stars. Of the freelance All-Star groups, SOTAC (Secret Order of the Altador Cup - a poorly kept secret, at that :P) is without a doubt the most famous. But last year several other groups came to prominence. SOTAC went with Kreludor, but another group, calling itself the Stealth AC Group, joined Virtupets. In the battle of the All-Star groups, it clearly seems that the Stealth AC Group had the most effect last year. It's only one factor out of many, but it will be interesting to see what becomes of the team this year.

So what will happen to Virtupets this year? Will the Stealth AC Group stay loyal, or depart elsewhere? And will this impact Virtupets in a serious way? Of course, no one is expecting Virtupets to repeat the win - the winner's curse is a firmly established pattern now and it would either take something exceptional or underhanded to break it. However, given the dramatic fall of the Lost Desert last year, the real question is if Virtupets can hold on to the second tier without falling further. I'd say Virtupets has a decent chance of staying in the top 8, but then again, it really is anyone's guess.
