Altador Cup News and Updates

  • June 14, 2010, 12:07 am NST - Heaven only knows why the results for the final day of the first round's matches took so long to be posted. I personally suspect Dr. Sloth, but Dave disagrees. But anyway, here they are, with plenty of surprises to make up for all the anticipation that waiting caused.

First, of course, we have our sweeps. In a fair surprise, Darigan Citadel managed to completely destroy Team Shenkuu, making Neopians all over wonder more and more if the second-to-first pattern will fail this year. Tyrannia's sweep of the home team was less of a surprise, as the Altadorians have been patrolling the bottom of the leaderboard lately.

In the surprise of the century, however, Team Faerieland was on the list of no-loss-but-no-sweep teams today. The game that kept them from the sweep was Slushie Slinger, whose hard-fought battle lasted all day and ended undetermined in a draw. In each of the other three games, the Faeries fought their way to an impressive set of victories that led them up the leaderboard from 17th to 16th. Congrats!

Also on the list of no-loss-but-no-sweep matches was the other former bottom-two team, though unfortunately the Moltarans were on the receiving end. The Roo Islanders took the win in Yooyuball, Slushie Slinger, and Shootout Showdown. In Make Some Noise, however, the Moltarans' screams held their own against the Rooligans for a draw.

The final addition to today's list was Team Meridell, who triumphed against their Mystery Island opponents in each of the three side games. In the Yooyuball match, however, neither team could maintain the lead for any length of time, so both had to settle for a draw in that game, giving each a draw for the day overall.

As for the other matches, another surprise occurred in the Terror Mountain--Krawk Island match. Last year's winners are currently placed several spots above the Terror Mountain team, but in yesterday's match the pirates could only secure a win in the Yooyuball match. While that win gave them the overall win for the day, the Terror Mountain team were able to secure a win in each of the other three games, helping them to maintain their spot on the leaderboard thanks to many wins in the three side games.

The same thing happened to Team Lost Desert that happened to Team Krawk Island. The currently highest-placed team easily secured the win in the Yooyuball match, but didn't have the energy left afterwards to claim a win in any of the side games. So while they suffered a loss for the day overall, the Virtupets team claimed three wins, one in each side game.

Team Kreludor unsurprisingly triumphed over Brightvale in most of their matches--Yooyuball, Make Some Noise, and Shootout Showdown. The Brightvale team, however, exercised their masterful slinging abilities to claim the win in Slushie Slinger that deprived the Kreludorians from the always-desired sweep.

In the final match of the day, Team Maraqua and Team Haunted Woods split the results, with a win for the Maraquans in Shootout Showdown and a win for the Haunted Woods slushie makers in Slushie Slinger. The two teams screamed equally hard for a draw in Make Some Noise, but the day's win went to Team Haunted Woods, who just barely edged out the Maraquans in the last moments of the Yooyuball match.

Well, that's it for the first round results. Stay tuned very soon for today's set of results, and good luck everyone!
  • June 11, 2010, 4:15 am NST - As we come to the close of the first round, it appears many teams are slipping, as we've seen quite a few interesting results today.

Firstly, in a clash between the Lost Desert and Meridell, Meridell managed to come out slightly on top, taking the Yooyuball win. The Lost Desert, current pack leaders, managed wins in Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise, but Meridell proved stronger than anticipated, so the Shootout Showdown match ended in a draw.

Elsewhere, the Darigan Citadel faced similar problems against Maraqua. This time however, Maraqua was able to take both the Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown wins, while the Darigan Citadel held on to Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise.

Kreludor, the other team in the top 5, managed slightly better against Mystery Island. Kreludor took wins in Yooyuball, Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown, whilst Mystery Island took the Slushie Slinger win.

It was big news for Moltara again today, as they managed two wins against Brightvale. Brightvale took Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger, but Moltara claimed Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown (their first win in this game of the season). Moltara have now only to score a win in Yooyuball.

In the Tyrannia-Haunted Woods match, Tyrannia showed its strength in the side games, by winning all three. The Woods however deprived Tyrannia of a full sweep, by taking the all important Yooyuball win.

Faerieland managed a Yooyuball win, which would once have been considered the Holy Grail for the team, in their match against Terror Mountain. The situation of the Tyrannia-Haunted Woods match repeated itself however, and Terror Mountain managed to take wins in all three side games.

A third match of the day echoed this performance, this time between Virtupets and Shenkuu. There it was Virtupets who took the Yooyuball win and Shenkuu who took the side games.

Two teams sitting close to each other, former champions Krawk Island and Roo Island, produced a set of results in Roo Island's favour. They were able to win in both Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown. Whilst Krawk Island took the Make Some Noise match, Slushie Slinger ended in a draw. The two teams are still very close in the standings though, and it looks as if it will be a bitter struggle between the two during the second round.

Finally, Kiko Lake and Altador clashed, who are again sitting next to each other in the standings. This time the match tipped slightly in Altador's favour, with a win in Yooyuball and a draw in Shootout Showdown. Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise however were taken by Kiko Lake.

Today is the last day of the first round robin, so make sure to give it your all - as today has suggested that complacency has a cost.
  • June 10, 2010, 5:53 am NST - Today's big news is that Moltara has finally managed some wins! Surprisingly, these wins came against Virtupets, a team that has been far stronger all season. Moltara managed to take wins in both Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise. Virtupets however took Shootout Showdown and the all important Yooyuball win. Is Moltara's slump coming to an end? Or did Virtupets just have an off day?

Elsewhere, Meridell managed a surprising upset over Kreludor, taking wins in both Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger. Kreludor meanwhile took the Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown wins. Meridell now sits about Kreludor in the standings, and last year's round robin champions are in danger of falling from the top 4 if Maraqua manages an improvement in the second round.

Speaking of Maraqua, they faced some difficulties against Roo Island that may suggest such an improvement is a long way off. Both Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger ended in draws, while the remaining games were split between the teams. Maraqua took Make Some Noise, and Roo Island took Shootout Showdown.

An identical match played out between Shenkuu and Krawk Island. Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger once again were drawn, while Shenkuu took Make Some Noise and Krawk Island took Shootout Showdown.

It was more plain sailing for the Lost Desert, Mystery Island, and the Darigan Citadel, all three managing sweeps against Faerieland, Altador, and Kiko Lake.

Meanwhile, Brightvale narrowly avoided a complete sweep by the Haunted Woods. The Woods took Yooyuball, Make Some Noise, and Shootout Showdown. Brightvale managed a draw in Slushie Slinger however. The Haunted Woods now sit narrowly behind Shenkuu in the standings, can they overtake them and enter a new bracket?

Finally, Terror Mountain and Tyrannia clashed. The two teams sit next to each other in the standings, and though Terror Mountain is ahead, this time Tyrannia came out on top. The Yooyuball match ended in a draw, and Terror Mountain took the Shootout Showdown win, but Tyrannia triumphed with wins in Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise.

There are only two more matches left in the first round robin, but teams are still very close in the standings, so there's still a lot to play for!

  • June 9, 2010, 4:11 am NST - One of those days again :p

The main news today is the startling amount of upsets at the top of the table. The Lost Desert only managed to draw Yooyuball against Roo Island, and lost the Shootout Showdown match. They were however able to win both Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise.

Kreludor meanwhile faced more serious difficulties against Maraqua. Maraqua took wins in both Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown, while Kreludor took the Make Some Noise win. The Slushie Slinger match ended in a draw.

And, perhaps most surprisingly, the Darigan Citadel faced a hiccup in the form of Faerieland. Darigan took wins in Yooyuball and Make Some Noise, but Faerieland forced the remaining two matches into draws.

Currently sitting in 4th position, Meridell faced less problems against Tyrannia. Meridell took wins in Yooyuball, Slushie Slinger, and Make Some Noise, while Tyrannia managed to hold on to a Shootout Showdown victory.

Outside of the top four, the Haunted Woods won their match against Moltara, sweeping the newbies completely - the only sweep of the day.

Elsewhere, Kiko Lake managed one of their Slushie Slinger upsets against Virtupets, taking the win in that game. Virtupets meanwhile took the wins in all three other games.

Brightvale, after such early promise, only managed a mediocre showing against Mystery Island. Whilst Brightvale took wins in Slushie Slinger and Shootout Showdown, Mystery Island took wins in Make Some Noise and the far more important Yooyuball.

Shenkuu managed an almost even split against Terror Mountain, who they currently sit in the same bracket as. Shenkuu took the Yooyuball win, while Terror Mountain managed wins in all three side games.

Finally, Altador managed a small upset against Krawk Island. The Islanders took wins in Yooyuball, Make Some Noise, and Shootout Showdown, but Altador forced a draw in Slushie Slinger.

Are we beginning to see the top teams crumble as the cup moves on? Only time will tell!
  • June 8, 2010, 4:06 am NST - Day 13 - Unlucky for some! Yesterday was one of those days when we saw small but surprising upsets, almost across the board.

Firstly, and perhaps mostly importantly, Kreludor suffered heavy losses in their match against the Darigan Citadel. The Citadel took wins in Yooyuball, Slushie Slinger, and Make Some Noise. Kreludor meanwhile managed to claw back a win in Shootout Showdown. With this result, the two teams now sit very close in the standings. Is Kreludor beginning to falter?

The story was identical in the Faerieland-Shenkuu match, though perhaps a little more expected. Shenkuu took the wins in Yooyuball, Slushie Slinger, and Make Some Noise, while Faerieland won Shootout Showdown.

Elsewhere, the Lost Desert came up against a small difficulty with Altador. The Desert took wins in Yooyuball, Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown, but Altador forced the Slushie Slinger match into a draw - again we are seeing Slushie Slinger as a weakness to be exploited.

It was a similar story in the Maraqua-Brightvale match. Maraqua took wins in Yooyuball, Make Some Noise, and Shootout Showdown, while Brightvale managed a win in Slushie Slinger.

Brightvale's partner in crime as far as early standings boosts go, Virtupets, also seems to be on the decline. They were completely swept by Krawk Island, who currently sit right next to them in the standings.

Two teams slightly more apart in the standings, Roo Island and Tyrannia, produced slightly different results. The day was ultimately Roo Island's, with the team taking the Yooyuball, Slushie Slinger, and Shootout Showdown wins. Tyrannia managed a last minute burst of power and took the Make Some Noise win.

Terror Mountain and Kiko Lake clashed elsewhere. In previous years, the two teams have been somewhat evenly matched, but this time Terror Mountain came out on top, managing a complete sweep against their opponents.

Another sweep followed in the Meridell-Moltara match. Hardly surprising that Moltara lost all the matches, when playing against a team ranked so much higher than them.

Finally, it was another case of dj vu all over again in the Haunted Woods-Mystery Island match. As in previous years, draws featured heavily - this time being in Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown. As is often the case with these two teams though, the Haunted Woods emerged victorious, taking wins in Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger. For better or worse, it seems as though Mystery Island is one of the few teams still producing consistent results like we've seen in previous years.

Good luck to all teams for today's matches, and come back tomorrow to see the results!
  • June 7, 2010, 3:37 am NST - We begin today's round up with news from the Kiko Lake-Moltara game. Kiko Lake managed their first sweep of the season against the Moltarans. Moltara have now played against all of the teams ranked close to them in the current standings, and lost resoundingly against all. Is this the final nail in the coffin for Team Moltara? Hopefully they can pick themselves up when the second round begins and surprise us all.

Today's other sweep was also less than a surprise, with Altador losing completely to the Haunted Woods, who are making a comeback after an early season slump. The Haunted Woods now sit just behind Mystery Island in the standings - another familiar sight from previous cups.

Outside of the sweeps, Faerieland managed a small but impressive upset against Maraqua. Maraqua took wins in Yooyuball, Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown, but Maraquan fears that they were lagging behind in Slushie Slinger proved somewhat correct, as Faerieland managed a draw there.

Meanwhile, two teams ranked closely in the standings, Virtupets and Brightvale, clashed in a match of their own. Virtupets emerged victorious, taking wins in Yooyuball, Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown (at last!), while Brightvale took the Slushie Slinger win.

Tournament frontrunners also faced difficulties yesterday. Spurred on by the Lost Desert's loss of Yooyuball to Mystery Island, the Darigan Citadel gave it their all and managed to triumph against the Desert. Whilst the Lost Desert took Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown in response, the Slushie Slinger match ended in a draw. Are we starting to see the Lost Desert slip after their confidence was shattered on Day 11?

Similar difficulties were faced by Kreludor against Terror Mountain, though Kreludor fared better. They took wins in Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger, while Terror Mountain took the Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown wins.

Former champions Krawk Island clashed with Tyrannia meanwhile, producing a mixed bag of results. Krawk Island took the Yooyuball win, while Tyrannia won in Slushie Slinger and Shootout Showdown. The Make Some Noise game however ended in a draw.

Elsewhere, Meridell clashed with Roo Island. The Islanders took wins in Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown, while Meridell won in Slushie Slinger. However, the all important Yooyuball match ended in a draw.

Finally, in a game against Mystery Island, Shenkuu emerged victorious, taking the Yooyuball and Make Some Noise wins. Mystery Island put up a tough fight though, and forced draws in both Shootout Showdown and Slushie Slinger.

Which brings us to an interesting point. It seems like, so far in the cup, we've seen a lot of teams gain or concede wins in Slushie Slinger, and an increased amount of draws in the game. What is it about this particular side game that seems to cause a lot of teams difficulty? And will such a pattern last throughout the entire cup?
  • June 6, 2010, 3:43 am NST - The results from Day 11 of the Altador Cup are now in!

We begin with what on the surface seems to be a very surprising result in the Mystery Island-Lost Desert game. Whilst the Lost Desert took wins in all three side games, Mystery Island managed to pull off a win in Yooyuball - breaking the Lost Deserts perfect winning streak in the game. However, this may be a little early to celebrate Mystery Island making a comeback, or the Lost Desert beginning to fall - after all, the Lost Desert has not been able to beat Mystery Island in Yooyuball since the round robin format was first introduced.

Elsewhere, a trio of unsprising sweeps for the Haunted Woods, Darigan Citadel, and Tyrannia against Faerieland, Altador and Moltara respectively suggested that once again, most matches are occuring as they did in previous years. It seems like the upsets we are seeing (with the exception of Brightvale and Virtupets), are minor ones rather than major ones.

Speaking of Brightvale, they managed a lacklustre performance against Shenkuu. Brightvale took a win in Slushie Slinger, and drew the Make Some Noise game, but it was certainly Shenkuu's day. The ninjas took wins in both Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown. Are we beginning to see the start of Shenkuu's traditional mid-season improvement?

Meanwhile, Kiko Lake provided a minor upset against Kreludor, by drawing the Slushie Slinger match and depriving Kreludor of an otherwise clean sweep.

There were draws in Slushie Slinger elsewhere yesterday as well. Firstly, in the Roo Island-Virtupets match. There however, Roo Island took wins in Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown, while Virtupets won Make Some Noise. This is a surprising result from Virtupets, who we would have expected on this year's performance to at least draw Yooyuball.

The other draw in Slushie Slinger came in the match between Maraqua and Krawk Island. Maraqua took the Yooyuball win, while Krawk Island scored wins in Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown.

Finally, the Meridell-Terror Mountain match ended in Meridell's favour. Whilst Terror Mountain took Slushie Slinger and Shootout Showdown wins, Meridell took the Make Some Noise game, and the far more important Yooyuball win.

Are we beginning to see certain teams tire after their early season bursts of power? There's only one way to find out, come back tomorrow!
  • June 5, 2010, 5:48 am NST - Another day of fast paced action is behind us, and now it's time to look at the results.

Again, the match of the day involved Kreludor, but this time their opponents were Shenkuu. Kreludor managed wins in all of the side games, but Shenkuu took the Yooyuball win. Are we beginning to see Kreludor slip after their defeat at the hands of the Lost Desert? Or are Shenkuu finally starting to get their act together?

Elsewhere, Faerieland managed yet another small but impressive win over Brightvale, in Shootout Showdown (the team's second ever win in the game). Brightvale meanwhile took wins in all of the other games.

Further surprises came in the Virtupets-Meridell game. Whilst Virtupets managed a draw in Make Some Noise, all other games went to Meridell. Is Virtupets beginning to slip, again losing a game of Shootout Showdown? It seems they are no longer the masters of the game.

Meanwhile, Krawk Island clashed with Mystery Island in a close match that finished narrowly in Krawk Island's favour. Both Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger ended in draws, but Krawk Island took the Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown wins.

Kiko Lake managed to claw back some dignity in their match against Maraqua, bringing the Slushie Slinger match to a draw while conceding all other games.

The Haunted Woods continued their mid-round climb with more wins against Terror Mountain, taking both Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger. Terror Mountain managed to take the Shootout Showdown win, while the Make Some Noise game ended in a draw.

At the same time, Darigan Citadel clashed with Tyrannia. Both teams managed to take one win (Yooyuball for Darigan, Slushie Slinger for Tyrannia), but both other games ended in draws.

Finally, a pair of full sweeps occured in the last two matches. Lost Desert unsurprisingly managed to sweep Moltara, while Roo Island took a full board of wins away from their match against Altador.

  • June 4, 2010, 3:26 am NST - There's one match everyone was looking forward to in yesterday's results, and that's the Lost Desert-Kreludor match. The two front runners finally clashed, and for the moment at least, the Lost Desert came out on top. The Desert natives managed wins in Yooyuball, Slushie Slinger, and Make Some Noise, though Kreludor managed a Shootout Showdown win. Could this be a possible finals situation? Maybe, but it's worth pointing out that we still have 8 days left in this round - and this cup has proven that there is no such thing as a foregone conclusion.

Elsewhere, the Haunted Woods finally managed a win in Yooyuball, their first of the season. Their opponents, Kiko Lake, took a win in Shootout Showdown and drew Slushie Slinger, while the Haunted Woods also took the Make Some Noise win.

Again, Faerieland saw a small burst of strength against Roo Island. The Islanders took wins in Yooyuball, Make Some Noise, and Shootout Showdown, but Faerieland forced a draw in Slushie Slinger.

The picture was repeated in the Mystery Island-Moltara match, with Mystery Island getting the upper hand. Whilst the draw will be better than a sweep for Moltara, they really need to improve their game if they are to lift themselves from last position.

Tyrannia showed typical dominance in side games against Maraqua. In a carbon copy repeat of the outcome whenever the two teams met last year, Maraqua managed a Yooyuball win, but lost all of the side games. It seems that in this cup at least some things are happening as they used to.

Meanwhile, Virtupets continued to show strength against the far larger Darigan Citadel. Virtupets took the Yooyuball win, while conceding Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise. Interestingly, once again Virtupets failed to get an outright win in Shootout Showdown, settling for a draw instead. It does seem as if last year's Shootout Showdown champions are focusing more on Yooyuball.

Terror Mountain clashed with Altador elsewhere. It was an interesting matchup, considering these two teams are currently so close in the standings. Terror Mountain emerged on top, with Yooyuball, Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown wins, while Altador managed a win in Slushie Slinger.

Finally, the Krawk Island-Brightvale match gave interesting results. Krawk Island took wins in Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown, while Brightvale managed a Slushie Slinger win and a draw in Make Some Noise.

Stay tuned for more daily updates from the Altador Cup as we enter the second half of this first round robin!

P.S. It appears one match was left off our roundup! Apologies to Shenkuu and Meridell fans - the showdown between these two teams ended with draws in Yooyuball, Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown. The only decisive result was in Slushie Slinger, which was won by Shenkuu.
