Altador Cup News and Updates

  • June 24, 2010, 5:09 am NST - Today's results have seen a few important changes in the standings.

Firstly, after being in the first bracket for so long, Meridell has fallen to 5th position. Their match against the Haunted Woods ended in draws in both Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown, while the Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise matches went to the Haunted Woods. Unfortunately, this result hurt the Haunted Woods as well, as they dropped from the second bracket position they acquired yesterday.

Roo Island now sits in Meridell's place, after a successful match against Kiko Lake. Roo Island took wins in Yooyuball, Make Some Noise, and Shootout Showdown, while Kiko Lake managed one of their good old Slushie Slinger upsets.

It was a similar story in the Maraqua match, the team that took the second bracket position back from the Haunted Woods. Maraqua came out on top against Altador, again with wins in Yooyuball, Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown, while Altador fought back with a Slushie Slinger win.

Elsewhere, Virtupets faced Terror Mountain. Virtupets walked away with wins in Yooyuball, Slushie Slinger, and Make Some Noise, while Terror Mountain kept hold of Shootout Showdown. As we come ever closer to the end of the round robin, can any team break Terror Mountain's perfect Shootout Showdown streak?

At the top of the standings, the Lost Desert faced some problems from Tyrannia. Yooyuball and Make Some Noise went to the Desert, while Tyrannia took Shootout Showdown and a draw in Slushie Slinger.

Kreludor meanwhile faced no such problems, managing a full sweep over Moltara. The other sweep of the day came from Brightvale, with four victories over Faerieland.

The Darigan Citadel meanwhile faced Shenkuu. Shenkuu managed a Shootout Showdown win, but that was all as the Citadel took wins in all three other games.

Finally, the changable Mystery Island team faced Krawk Island, with Krawk Island coming out on top. Wins in Yooyuball, Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown went to the pirates, while Mystery Island managed a single Slushie Slinger win.
  • June 22, 2010, 6:21 am NST - Yesterday was a day with a lot of streaks. Most are not that surprising, but there are a couple of interesting results.

Firstly, the Lost Desert managed a full sweep over Moltara, and the Darigan Citadel over Altador. Given that these teams currently sit at opposite ends of the standings, that's hardly surprising.

Moving slightly higher than the bottom bracket, Shenkuu managed a sweep over Brightvale, who currently sit in the bracket below them. Krawk Island meanwhile, currently in 6th, swept 15th placed Faerieland. The final sweep of the day was the Haunted Woods over Kiko Lake.

The other results from yesterday proved much more interesting. Meridell faced problems against Tyrannia. Meridell, who have been sitting in the top 4 for some time, managed a win in Yooyuball, and a draw in Make Some Noise, but Tyrannia fought back with wins in Slushie Slinger and Shootout Showdown.

Roo Island, currently ranked 5th, also faced problems against Virtupets. Whilst Roo Island took wins in all three side games, Virtupets managed a Yooyuball win.

Further down the standings, Mystery Island faced Terror Mountain. Terror Mountain took their Shootout Showdown win, and a Yooyuball win, while Mystery Island took wins in both Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise.

Finally, Kreludor faced Maraqua, and whilst Maraqua put up a good fight, it was only enough for a draw in Yooyuball, while the three side games went to Kreludor.

Elsewhere, El Picklesaur and SenorMalo triumphed in the TNT Staff Tournament, leaving only 2 matches in the first round still to be played.
  • June 21, 2010, 6:27 am NST - Another day, another set of Slushie Slinger annoyances.

First off, we have probably the largest number of sweeps to date this year: Team Terror Mountain over Team Faerieland, Team Kreludor over Team Altador, Team Tyrannia over Team Kiko Lake, and Team Meridell over Team Moltara. Congrats!

The Darigan Citadel--Brightvale match nearly went the same way, but the Brightvale Slushie Slingers kept up with Team Darigan just long enough to claim a single draw for the day that kept them from the sweeps list.

The Roo Island--Mystery Island match ended exactly the same way as Darigan vs. Brightvale: wins in Yooyuball, Make Some Noise, and Shootout Showdown for Roo Island, but only a draw in Slushie Slinger.

Team Maraqua vs. Team Lost Desert was a pretty evenly split match. Team Lost Desert began well with a win in Slushie Slinger, but Team Maraqua came back with just enough shouting and shooting to score draws in Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown. Finally, the Yooyuball match ended just barely in Team Maraqua's favor, giving them the win for the day.

Meanwhile, Team Haunted Woods and Team Virtupets split the results, each winning two games. Team Virtupets took Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown, while Team Haunted Woods took Slushie Slinger and Yooyuball, as well as the overall win.

Last but not least, Slushie Slinger struck again in the final match between Krawk Island and Shenkuu. The first match of Make Some Noise ended in an indecisive draw, but Krawk Island managed wins in both the Shootout Showdown and the Yooyuball matches. In the final game of the day, however, it was Shenkuu who were victors, slinging their slushies to a win.

That's all for today! Remember that tomorrow is the last day of this round of the TNT Staff Tournament...don't forget to vote again on Wednesday! On the subject of staff tourneys, today is the last day of the JN Staff Tourney, so don't forget to vote for that either!
  • June 20, 2010, 4:37 am NST - It's one of those days with upsets again!

Firstly, and perhaps most surprisingly, the Haunted Woods seemingly stomped all over the Kreludor in yesterday's match. Kreludor, who has been vying for first place with the Lost Desert for some time, narrowly avoided a full sweep by the Haunted Woods by forcing the Make Some Noise match into a draw. Does this startling result mean that Kreludor are losing their touch?

Meanwhile, the Lost Desert also faced problems, if to a smaller degree, against Roo Island. Roo Island took Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown wins, while the Lost Desert held on to Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise. This is a slightly better result for Roo Island than the first round, as then it was a draw in Yooyuball.

Meridell, currently in third, also faced a few problems against Terror Mountain. They managed to hold on to the Yooyuball win though, and took Make Some Noise. Terror Mountain meanwhile forced a draw in Slushie Slinger, and of course managed a win in Shootout Showdown to maintain their undefeated record this season.

Elsewhere, the Darigan Citadel fared the best out of the top four during their match against Mystery Island. The Citadel managed wins in Yooyuball, Slushie Slinger, and Make Some Noise, while conceding a draw in Shootout Showdown. This is a much less impressive showing for Mystery Island than the first round, when it was draws nearly across the board.

Outside of the top four, Moltara continued to claw back wins from the bottom of the standings, this time against Altador. Moltara took the Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown wins, while Altador took wins in Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger. Given Altador's proximity to Moltara in the standings, many viewed this as the newcomer's last chance to gain a Yooyuball win. Have they blown it? Only time will tell.

Shenkuu meanwhile had a match with a minor hitch against Faerieland. While Shenkuu managed Yooyuball, Slushie Slinger, and Make Some Noise wins, Faerieland scored a Shootout Showdown win to avoid a full sweep.

Nearby in the standings, Tyrannia faced off against the second bracket ranked Maraqua. Tyrannia showed their side game strength, taking wins in Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise. However, Maraqua emerged on top with Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown wins.

Meanwhile, Virtupets faced Brightvale, and it was Virtupets that came off the better, with wins in Yooyuball, Make Some Noise, and Shootout Showdown. Brightvale avoided a full sweep by taking the Slushie Slinger match. Interestingly, this is the exact same outcome as their first round match.

Finally, Krawk Island faced Kiko Lake. Again, it was an exact repeat of first round action. Krawk Island took the Yooyuball, Make Some Noise, and Shootout Showdown matches, while Kiko Lake retained their Slushie Slinger win.
  • June 19, 2010, 7:10 am NST - Ladies and gentlemen, the results today are for day 23 of the Cup...goes by fast, doesn't it?

Well, we'll start with the sweeps. Congratulations to Team Haunted Woods and Team Kreludor for their sweeps over Team Altador and Team Brightvale, respectively.

Where are Faerieland and Moltara in that list, you may ask? Well, Team Moltara was unable to defeat Team Terror Mountain in any of the games yesterday, but they were able to hold their own in Slushie Slinger long enough to claim a draw. Their overall status for the day was still a loss, but the draw keeps them from the sweep list, which is always good :).

As for Faerieland, their luck seems to be turning these past few days. With their second overall win in a row, Faerieland maintained their surprise jump to 15th place yesterday. Team Kiko Lake claimed wins in Slushie Slinger and Shootout Showdown, but the faeries triumphed in Yooyuball and Make Some Noise.

Team Lost Desert claimed a near-sweep over the powerful Team Darigan Citadel yesterday. Winning both Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise, the team was set up for a possible sweep and certainly for the day's win. While they were unable to actually defeat the Lost Desert in any game, however, Team Darigan showed their goal-scoring skills by earning a draw in Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown, forcing the day's overall result to a draw.

Team Roo Island vs. Team Tyrannia had split results like Faerieland--Kiko Lake, though not the same pattern. The Rooligans managed a win in the Yooyuball-centric games, but could not tackle the Tyrannians in the orignal side games--Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise--and suffered losses in both.

Team Meridell nearly defeated Team Shenkuu in every game yesterday, but the Shenkuu team wisely strategized to focus on Make Some Noise, which they won by a wide margin. Each other game, however, they lost to Team Meridell.

Team Virtupets claimed the same result--3 wins and a loss--against Team Mystery Island, only this time the loss was in Slushie Slinger, rather than Make Some Noise.

In the final match of the day, Team Krawk Island set up the results well with a win in Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown and a draw in Slushie Slinger. When they came to the Yooyuball match, however, they were tired and simply could not keep up with the offensive line of the Maraquan team. The match ended in a win for the Maraquans, turning the tables of the day's results.

Well, that's it for today...now, what are you waiting for? Get out there and play some games!!
  • June 18, 2010, 4:01 am NST - Another change in the standings today! But teams are still so unbelievably close that one win could mean anything!

The main news today is that Kreludor has lost their first position to the Lost Desert, due to a combination of results from both team's matches. Kreludor's match against Virtupets ended with Kreludor taking Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown wins, while Virtupets took wins in Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger. The Lost Desert meanwhile capitalised on this, using their match against Kiko Lake to gain three wins in Yooyuball, Make Some Noise, and Shootout Showdown. Kiko Lake however managed to force the Slushie Slinger match into a draw.

Outside of the top two, Darigan faced problems against the Haunted Woods team. What should have been an overall win for Darigan, given the state of the standings, instead turned into a draw between the two teams. Both Yooyuball and Make Some Noise ended in draw, while the Haunted Woods took Slushie Slinger, and Darigan took Shootout Showdown.

This of course puts Darigan closer in the standings to Meridell, who had a good showing yesterday against Altador. The current 4th place team managed a complete sweep against the home nation.

Another sweep happened in the Roo Island-Brightvale match, this time with Roo Island taking the win. This makes a change from the first round, where Brightvale were able to keep hold of wins in all three side games.

It was another good day for Faerieland, as they scored wins against Moltara in Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown. Moltara fought back though, and managed a draw in Slushie Slinger and a win in Make Some Noise. Moltara are still missing a single win in Yooyuball, and they really need to buck up their game if they are to get one.

Elsewhere, Krawk Island clashed with Terror Mountain. The match went more in Krawk Island's favour than the first round did, with wins in Yooyuball, Slushie Slinger, and Make Some Noise. Terror Mountain managed to hold on to their Shootout Showdown win though, retaining their undefeated record this season.

Mystery Island once again proved their wild card status, managing a Yooyuball win over Maraqua. The Maraquans didn't let that get to them though, and went on to win all three side games.

Finally, two teams ranked next to each other, Shenkuu and Tyrannia, met on the field. The day went slightly in Shenkuu's favour, winning Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown. Tyrannia were able to win Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise though.

Also, a reminder that two more TNT staff tournament rounds have been played as well! Pie and Twitterpate emerged victorious against Ziggytron and Dirigibles. The next matches of the staff tournament will be played on Monday.
  • June 17, 2010, 12:42 am NST - Another day gone, and the biggest surprise yet to report!

The sweeps for today: Kreludor entirely defeated Faerieland, fairly unsurprisingly, and Darigan Citadel did the same with Moltara, also fairly unsurprisingly. You may not be surprised that Team Altador is also included in the list of sweeps today. What will, however, probably surprise you is the fact that they are the sweeping team, achieving a complete victory over Team Kiko Lake yesterday. Huge congratulations! Due to these results, they have reclaimed 16th place--watch out, faeries! This battle is going to be close to the very end!

There are three near-sweep matches to report today, each with a different troublesome game. The first is Tyrannia vs. Brightvale. While the Tyrannians defeated their opponents in each of the side games moderately easily, Team Brightvale gave them quite the run for their money in the game that counts. As a result, each team received a draw for the too-close-to-call Yooyuball match.

Though Team Lost Desert's near-sweep day still ended in a win overall, they were understandably disappointed when they arrived in the Shootout Showdown stadium yesterday, ready to complete the set of wins, only to find that they were unable to gain the upper hand against the Mystery Islanders. Of course, neither were their opponents able to gain the upper hand, so the match ended in a draw.

Lastly, Team Maraqua three times drilled home the fact that Team Shenkuu is not in the lead, despite the second-to-first rule of past Cups. In Slushie Slinger, however, Team Shenkuu were able to hold their own and remind the spectators of their fierce competitive spirit, and the match ended in a draw.

The other matches went as follows. Team Roo Island defeated Team Terror Mountain in Yooyuball, Slushie Slinger, and Make Some Noise, but could not keep up with the goal-crazy team in Shootout Showdown and were forced to suffer a loss in that match.

Team Virtupets triumphed in both Yooyuball-related matches against Team Meridell yesterday, while the Meridellians took the win in the screaming arena. Both team slung their slushies equally well and went home with a draw.

Last, but not least, Team Krawk Island proved to have far louder fans and far faster goal-scorers than Team Haunted Woods, while Team Haunted Woods proved to have more coordinated slushie waitresses. In the Yooyuball match, however, neither team had a clear advantage, and the day ended in a draw for both.

Congrats to all the winners, and good luck today! The finals will be here before you know it!
  • June 16, 2010, 4:23 am NST - Some very interesting results to report today, a lot of teams have seen real shake ups since the first round!

Kreludor has taken back the lead with a near sweep against the now second placed Lost Desert. Kreludor managed wins in Yooyuball, Make Some Noise, and Shootout Showdown, but the Lost Desert only just avoided a full sweep by drawing the Slushie Slinger match. This is a far cry from the first round clash between these two teams, when Kreludor lost almost completely. Are the Lost Desert starting to crumble?

If they are, it certainly isn't an isolated incident. Meridell, who had been steadily rising in the standings for the last few days, fell dramatically against Maraqua. Draws were recorded in both Slushie Slinger and Shootout Showdown, and while Meridell scored a Make Some Noise win, the Yooyuball win went to Maraqua.

The other team currently in the top 4, Darigan Citadel, also faced problems. Krawk Island stole a Yooyuball win and forced Shootout Showdown into a draw, while the Citadel managed to regain some pride with Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise wins.

Outside of the top 4, we saw the Haunted Woods narrow the gap between them and Virtupets in the standings in their match against Mystery Island. In a match that went even more in the Woods's favour than the first round, they scored wins in Yooyuball, Slushie Slinger, and Shootout Showdown. Mystery Island however managed to hold on to a Make Some Noise win.

Roo Island, currently ranked fifth, encountered some minor problems against Faerieland, currently ranked sixteenth. Roo Island took wins in Yooyuball, Make Some Noise, and Shootout Showdown, but Slushie Slinger once again proved a weakness as Faerieland were able to take the win there.

Virtupets, a clear contender in the second bracket, also faced problems yesterday against Tyrannia. There was a draw in Yooyuball, and while Tyrannia held on to their Slushie Slinger win, Virtupets took Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown.

The Brightvale-Altador game produced a much more mixed bag of results than the first round. This time, Brightvale took wins in Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger, while Altador managed to draw Shootout Showdown and take a Make Some Noise win for themselves.

Meanwhile, Shenkuu came out slightly on top against Terror Mountain. Terror Mountain managed wins in Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown, but a draw in Slushie Slinger coupled with Shenkuu's Yooyuball win tipped the day in the ninja's favour. However, this is only a marginally better result than the first round - and certainly isn't what we would expect if Shenkuu were making their second round comeback.

The final match of the day was between Kiko Lake and Moltara, and Moltara managed a surprising show of strength. Draws in Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown made the other two side matches all the more important. In the end, teams took one win apiece, Kiko Lake taking Slushie Slinger, and Moltara taking Make Some Noise - resulting in the roundest draw we have seen in some time.

Teams in the top bracket, second bracket, and fourth bracket are now very close, with only 1 or 2 wins between top and bottom. We can expect to see a lot more changes in the standings over the next few days - this is certainly going to be a nail biting finish!
  • June 15, 2010, 9:37 am NST - Day 2 of Round 2 done. It was a fairly uneventful set of results, though it certainly redefined Slushie Slinger as the chosen game of weaker teams.

First off, the sweeps. They are unsurprising--Meridell over Faerieland, Virtupets over Altador, and Krawk Island over Moltara.

Today's only near-sweep team was the Lost Desert, which was able to achieve hard-fought wins against Team Shenkuu in each of the three side games. The game that kept them from the sweep--and, unfortunately, from the overall win--was Yooyuball, in which they could only manage a draw against the Shenkuu team.

Three separate teams won Yooyuball, Make Some Noise, and Shootout Showdown while losing Slushie Slinger yesterday: Team Roo Island (who went against Team Haunted Woods), Team Maraqua (who went against Team Brightvale), and Team Mystery Island (who went against Team Kiko Lake). It certainly seems that Slushie Slinger is the go-to game concentration for weaker teams this year.

The final two matches went thus: Team Kreludor achieved a win in both Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown while losing Make Some Noise to the always loudly cheering Darigan fans. In the Slushie Slinger battle, neither team rose up as victorious, and a draw was announced.

Team Tyrannia defeated Team Terror Mountain in Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise but simply could not withstand the volley of goals that gave the Terror Mountain team the win in Shootout Showdown. In the match that counts, however, no winner could be decided, and the day ended in a draw for the two teams.
  • June 14, 2010, 3:42 am NST - So the second round is finally underway, and here is our first set of results!

In a strangely familiar echo of the final match of the first round robin, Tyrannia once again managed a full sweep over Altador. In fact, in the Meridell-Brightvale game, we also saw identical results as the first round. Meridell took the Yooyuball, Make Some Noise, and Shootout Showdown wins, while Brightvale took Slushie Slinger.

Elsewhere, the Kreludor-Terror Mountain match ended in a similar, but slightly different way to the first round. Kreludor took wins in Yooyuball and Slushie Slinger, while Terror Mountain took the Shootout Showdown win, as before. The Make Some Noise match that previously went to Terror Mountain ended in a draw though, suggesting that Terror Mountain may have slipped ever so slightly.

However, that was where the similarities ended. We saw a completely different set of results in the Krawk Island-Lost Desert match. Krawk Island managed a win in Yooyuball, and whilst the Lost Desert managed wins in Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise, the Shootout Showdown match ended in a draw. This result now puts the Lost Desert perilously close to being overtaken in the standings by the Darigan Citadel.

Speaking of whom, Team Darigan won their match against Kiko Lake, though the Kiko Lake team managed one of their Slushie Slinger draws they seemed to love from the first round. Not letting that get to them, Darigan went on to win all three remaining games.

Shenkuu managed something of a reversal of fortunes against Virtupets. Virtupets only managed a Shootout Showdown win, while Shenkuu took all three remaining games. Could this be the start of Shenkuu's traditional second round comeback?

After Friday's (or rather, yesterday's :p) success against Kiko Lake, Faerieland continued to score wins against Mystery Island. Faerieland managed a draw in Slushie Slinger, and a win in Shootout Showdown. This didn't prove enough however, as Mystery Island took wins in Yooyuball and Make Some Noise for the overall win.

In the Haunted Woods-Moltara match, we saw the Woods come out on top, not to the surprise of many. They walked away with wins in Yooyuball, Slushie Slinger, and Shootout Showdown. Moltara managed to fight back though, bringing the Make Some Noise match to a close as a draw.

Finally, we saw Roo Island come away from the Maraqua match victorious, with Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown wins, while Maraqua took wins from Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise. Are Maraqua starting to lose confidence?

Come back tomorrow to find out!
