Neopets in the Washington Post

Neopets was featured in part of a larger article about the death of Flash over in the Washington Post.

Here are some of the related excerpts:

Neopets, a website where players can take care of a virtual pet and play games, similarly faced a challenging transition away from Flash. In 2020, the company estimated the site still had 100,000 daily active users and 1.5 million monthly active players.

“We’re not like a hundred person dev team where we could just focus on everything at once,” said Neopets brand manager Stephanie Lord. “So we definitely have to prioritize.”

And here, a Nintendo Switch game is possibly teased:

While parts of the Neopets site still don’t work, without the looming deadline, the development team is just focused on fixing features gradually, Lord said. The company is also considering bringing Neopets to Nintendo Switch, to modernize the product and expand its audience.

(Don't get too excited—that sounds like a very vague desire, and would likely not come to fruition for awhile even if there was a console game developer interested in licensing Neopets.)

And one funny anecdote about trying to make the Wheel of Monotony spin for longer:

One example is the Wheel of Monotony, an iconic stone wheel in the prehistoric land Tyrannia which spins for hours before landing on a prize. After Flash died, the wheel was down until February, when developers successfully brought the feature to HTML5. As a daily activity, it was on the list to be fixed quickly. That proved to be a technical challenge. The wheel’s main feature is that it will spin for an extensive amount of time, until a Flash player engine told it to stop. Neopets developers needed to use extra math and a countdown timer in JavaScript to keep the wheel running.

I'd love to see another Neopets console game, and Switch would be a good choice if they went that path! But I'd hope it'd be more like The Darkest Faerie rather than something like Puzzle Adventure. (I'm still salty that I never got the site theme. I bought it to get the site theme, a family member used the initial code to get the no-trade book, only for that to lock me out of redeeming any further codes. I, years later, borrowed someone else's Wii to get a set of codes for myself, only for one of the codes to be "already redeemed" so I gave up because I didn't even find the game fun. I just wanted the site theme.)

So uh, if it's in the plans, adventure game please, not puzzle game with codes. Puzzle game with codes causes sadness.

I hope the Switch comment is about an actual game and not just porting the site to Switch somehow

Switch game would be nice. Personally I’d love something like Fantasy Life or Dragon Quest Builders that has building and decorating as well as adventure.

@begeorge2424: Hoping that to. The website--even the new redesigned version--would be a boring Switch game.

I wouldn't mind terribly if they re-released Darkest Faerie. (which likely isn't what this is)
I own two copies, but have never played it, because I never owned a Playstation.. :/

I'm with Joe on that one. I would LOVE to play that game, but I don't have a Playstation nor can I afford it.

I would really like to see the site have games up and running and closet/customization glitches fixed before they branch out into other areas.
thecrazyoo, April 8, 2021 8:16 PM NST
A site port for switch wouldn't make sense at all, if it ever happens it's going to be a side game. Also I agree, the site is terrible to play right now, so many pages still need converting and everything is still so weird. I still can't even see NC items in my revamped inventory or properly customise UC pets, it's absolutely ridiculous and all it does is push players away, that's the actual issue they need to focus on right now.

Brace yourselves, everyone! We need to prepare for a lot of nostalgic returning players' outcries when they see that the site is now in early 3.0! 😨

We were here for 2.0,
we were here for 3.0,
Some of us will be here for 4.0!

Prepare to console the returning base! Show them all of the goodness that Neopets still has!
katina_choovanski, April 8, 2021 11:13 PM NST
The Wheel of Monotony STILL doesn't work though.
thecrazyoo, April 9, 2021 5:46 AM NST
@1jediboy kind of you to assume there'll be a 4.0 considering how things are going on
thecrazyoo, April 9, 2021 5:47 AM NST
^The emoji was supposed to be instead of , oops
neolikepets, April 9, 2021 6:24 AM NST
Hey, credit where it's due, Neopets has handled the transition out of the flash era a lot better than a lot of sites.
blastoise87blue, April 9, 2021 6:06 PM NST
I hope its a rerelease of either Darkest Faerie (or even the psp/vita game) but hoping to much? Or maybe somehow Keyquest on the switch?
darella, April 9, 2021 6:25 PM NST
i like that they're clearly planning some big stuff but i really hope they can get the site fully converted and properly working before releasing any of it. if their objective is to attract new players, i doubt they will stay in the site the way it is.

still, i guess it's nice to see that they're somewhat committed to neopets.
trip_away, April 9, 2021 9:31 PM NST
Now they mentioned Habbo, Habbo 2020 (or Unity) is awful
At least, we had the downloable old flash hotel to use while they end to perfect Unity game
send_dis_pear, April 9, 2021 9:31 PM NST
neopets being in the same major news article as FNF (the newgrounds rhythm game) is hilariously cool and I love it
recklesse, April 11, 2021 1:12 AM NST
Maybe it's just me, but it seems like Neopets' 'brand manager' has been putting a lot of effort into getting her name 'out there' lately.
